Re: HPD responds to accusations of racial profiling with Oklahoma teen, dancers

Look, I think the officers at a point exceeded their authority, but I sure don't want to discourage the police from checking on a 13yr old kid travelling with two much older men who obviously aren't relatives. Also think there's more to this than the parents are letting on. What sort of dance competition is this and what the hell, in this day and age letting your 13yr old go overnight anywhere with only older male teachers - that's just dumb. Open the freakin' newspaper if you need a clue as to why. The parents homeschool.

None of these things smells too badly alone, but together there's a whiff of something not so savory going on.

As a side note, anyone who wears their hat to the side like that deserves a customary beatdown to begin with.

I always heard that they put the really dumb police officers in those neighborhoods.
That's has actually been a complaint by resident of east Austin. Putting less experienced cops in the worse places.

Absolutely disgusting. These 2 black men were not pimps, kidnappers or rapists. They were freakin' dance instructors, and damn good ones too.

I hope her parents sue HPD for as much as they can get. They deserve it after what HPD put them through. And, dont dare to tell me that institutional racism is dead. If you really believe that crap, then you are living in a cave.

    Article is here.

    From Article excerpt:
.......13-year-old Landry Thompson, her instructor, 29-year-old Emmanuel Hurd and her dance partner, 22-year-old Josiah Kelly. They travelled from Tulsa to Houston, to work with hip-hop artists at Planet Funk Academy and tape a video.

In a statement, HPD said, “Given the age discrepancies...and the child had no relatives in the area, officers in an abundance of caution, did their utmost to ensure her safety” and sent her to CPS.

I dunno' Dana, with the age differences, I'm not L.E. but I might have considered the situation suspicious. I'm from an area where human smuggling is rife.
Not sure I can fault the Police but might question the parent's sanity ( 3 am )..

    all things considered.

Why not the police, when the schools do it too? Experienced police officers and teachers are likely to leave the city if not allowed to get out of the hood. That may not be "fair" but it is reality. I guess they could try "combat pay".

The whole thing reminds me of that little beauty queen girl in Colorado that ended up dead. Ramsey I think her name was.

They now think the parents were involved even though they're both dead. They may have given access to the killer.

I have two daughter and I'd be damned if they got to go anywhere at 13 without parents being there. (and other children)
