The study that started it all the infamous Seralini genetically modified corn causes rat tumors study has at last been officially retracted. Yet another sign of the scientific consensus behind genetically modified organisms. I can only hope it will finally remove what has been the chief strut and almost mandatory piece of evidence to be trotted out by anti-GMO activist. Good grief and good riddance.

"Bowing to scientists' near-universal scorn, the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology today fulfilled its threat to retract a controversial paper claiming that a genetically modified (GM) maize causes serious disease in rats, after the authors refused to withdraw it."

The biggest problem with that study was they selected and then overfed rats that are pre-disposed to develop tumors when put on an unrestricted diet of any type IIRC.

It wont matter. We saw the same thing with the "vaccines cause autism" crowd. Even when the "science" that started their whole ideology is retracted, they hang on to the belief. That's because for most of them, the belief never came from the "science" in the first place. They read it on blogs, had pretty celebrities warn them of the danger, and just invented the rest on their own.

Anti-GMO sentiment has become the 'fashionable' thing for an odd mixture of skeptical progressives and paranoid libertarians. Hate corporate America? Then you must hate GMO's. Think globalization is evil? Well throw in GMO's too! Think the Government and the FDA are conspiring against you? GMO's!

Nature! Organic! Frankenfood! Monsanto*!

*Commercial practices of a company =/= the scientifically verified safety of the product they hawk

And people died because they wanted 'organic' foods, not realizing that dangerous organisms might live there.

big surprise there.

however, this will just be billed as part of a corporate conspiracy to poison us with frankencorn or something.

it's ok, though, because wheat (organic or otherwise) and aspartame will kill us far faster than GMOs. it's true. i saw it on a facebook infographic.

Dont forget the recent decent into astrology of the climate change crowd.

That's true. Deniers relying on blogs and oil funded think tanks vs. actual scientists and massive evidence. I agree with you. Those guys are delusional.

The "deniers" merely request the same burden afforded to any claim within science.

Its the left that has politicized the issue, made it a "crises", and then come up short on evidence of its claims.

I know a con job when I see it.

That sounds exactly like the argument an anti-vaxer would make.

Congratulations

Another classic fallacy, like I have said-these tactics are elucidating.

Association fallacy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An association fallacy is an inductive informal fallacy of the type hasty generalization or red herring which asserts that qualities of one thing are inherently qualities of another, merely by an irrelevant association. The two types are sometimes referred to as guilt by association and honor by association. Association fallacies are a special case of red herring, and can be based on an appeal to emotion

This should be on the heading of every new topic.
