IMHO if we don't, its only a matter of time before Taiwan is invaded and they're already bullying Japan.

China is a different culture in which face saving is everything, which makes chess game war moves more dangerous. plus, we owe them a ton of money.

can't we just be a country for a while? we have crumbling infrastructure and our health care system is a mess. you don't go out and start bar fights when the roof needs fixed.

I think they're rampaging up for an invasion of Taiwan. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if its the next breaking news event. According to some stuff I'm seeing online, they've conducted two large-scale exercises recently with tens of thousands of troops specifically to gain proficiency in commandeering the Taiwan highway system and rail lines to taking over the country.

Maochun Yu, a professor at the United States Naval Academy, stated that the recent military exercise, designated “Mission 2013B”, is the second large-scale operation of its kind to be launched this year by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

good point. i see ways to fix it, but none that have a chance to go anywhere politically. we can lay some of the blame on the ridiculous partisanship of our political system, but that fire is stoked by us. the electorate is largely responsible for the fact that visionary solutions can't be implemented.

    I don't know about that.

What does China have to gain from invading Taiwan ?

What would they have to gain from isolating one of their primary Consumers ? Us.

I think Obama will defend Taiwan, he'll stand by our commitment and that would lead to a very unstable economic environment for the Chinese.

One of their primary concerns is keeping hundreds of millions of Chinese employed. A war with the US would crush them economically.

I hope so. The last thing we need is another war, and with a country with the largest standing army on earth who is also nuclear capable.

If they do invade Taiwan I say an immediate forfeiture of all debt owed to China and Chinese interests and embargo of all Chinese imports. Nothing lifted until Taiwan is granted officially recognized independence.

By way of history for those unfamiliar, Taiwan was once a part of China. The Chinese revolution occurred and people not wanting to live under communism fled to Taiwan, which was difficult for the new revolutionary government to administer since it was separated by a good stretch of ocean from the mainland. Mainland China has continued claimed sovereignty over Taiwan, just never tried to enforce it.

Times goes on and Taiwan operates as a small island country and had official relations with the US. It has elections, a decent defense force for its size and their economy is booming. Meanwhile mainland China is an oversized, impoverished third world country. Then Nixon and Kissinger start thinking about dollar signs with a billion person market for American goods plus wanting to throw the Soviets off balance by chumming up with their neighbor that also was a sleeping giant in terms of being a potential world power. We sacrificed the best possible loyalty with Taiwan and swapped it with a priority trading relationship with mainland China.

I think it was the in 90s mainland China figured out communism was keeping them in poverty. What they did was change to a western style economy while keeping a traditional dictatorial style government. Interestingly, the economy flourished as they recently surpassed Japan as the second strongest economy in the world after the US and we owe them tons of money.
