WASHINGTON — The railroad industry brags in its national publicity campaign that it spends billions of dollars improving its infrastructure “so taxpayers don’t have to.”But the ads don’t tell everything. The nation’s freight rail network has been the quiet recipient of more than $600 million in federal investment during the Obama administration.
According to Federal Railroad Administration numbers, at least half that amount has gone to projects that benefit the nation’s four largest railroads, the same companies at the heart of the industry’s ubiquitous “Freight Rail Works” campaign.
That doesn’t even include tens of millions more that states have contributed for additional investment in ports and high-speed passenger trains that’s boosted the nation’s freight railroads.

Obama spends 600 million on railroads...sounds like another outrage peice. I did not even know Obama could just give money away. Yep, I bet it is more outrage.

Isn't the gov't creating (or saving) jobs cool? This probably only cost about $250K per job per year, but it gets that campaign cash flowing. You didn't build that, we built it for you. ;)

I really dont know, can the POTUS appropriate money like that? j

You don't think the President can pick up the phone, and put things in motion behind the scenes? Don't be naive, and don't take me for a fool.

The President does not appropriate money, but a good deal of the federal budget is not specifically earmarked for a particular program so the President does indeed have a good deal of latitude on how money gets allocated.

Perhaps you did not know this.

Nah, he knows it, he just wants to pretend that when a progressive liberal president does it then that is not what goes on, but when a republican does it, then it's all bad, and should be condemned...Typical today really.

Doesn't this classify as coporate welfare?

More like a thank you to Buffett for having O's back in the fundamental transformation.

As a railroader (who finds nearly every aspect of the profession dispicable):

it is corporate welfare. Money gets given to the states, who give out grants to private railroads. These railroad jobs are enormously overpaid, and then the big guys on top ultimately make millions off of a job they should be doing themselves. They don't give out raises for this state job, they get paid their same rates. I could go on for hours about how much railroading in its current form is truly screwing over this country.
