UN women's rights resolution passed despite backlash

United Nations (United States) (AFP) - A UN General Assembly committee has agreed a landmark first resolution on women's rights defenders such as Malala Yousafzai, despite a hard fought campaign by an alliance including the Vatican to weaken the measure.

A Norwegian-led coalition, which has prepared the resolution for months, had to delete language that condemned "all forms of violence against women" to get the text passed by consensus late Wednesday.

I can't help but think that this is where extremist left wing multiculturalism has led us. I'm all for understanding and supporting cultural values, morals & traditions or customs as long as what the add to the melting pot is positive or has no negative effect. However, since when is violence against women a tradition, a value or custom? The UN is a dirty ****ing joke. These concessions go against their very own charter. Hang them all.

Yeah, getting rid of this paragraph...

"In the end Norway agreed to delete a paragraph which said states should "strongly condemn all forms of violence against women and women human rights defenders and refrain from invoking any customs, traditions or religious consideration to avoid their obligations.'"

...pretty much negates the point of such a resolution, since it's specifically institutions that legitimize violence against women that are the problem.

Since when is violence against women a tradition, a value or custom? Remember, we're talking about the world, not about the USA. When you talk about "left wing multiculturalism", again, we're talking about the world, not the USA. The world is indeed multi cultural and some of those cultures do have a tradition of violence against women.

But, you're correct about the UN. If they can't come up with a resolution supporting women's rights because of consideration for nations where women are still treated as chattel, even knowing that such a resolution has no teeth to it anyway, then what good is it?

When I said extremist left wing multiculturalism, I meant more more in regards to the concessions made by these very left wing nations.

One thing we agree on at least.

The membership of the Human Rights Commission has been a strong clue of that for a long time now...

Female circumcision?*

A man being offered the option of marrying a woman he rapes instead of going to jail?

A woman not having equal child custody rights with a husband in a divorce?

Men being legally allowed to beat their wives?

Women not being allowed to travel without their husband's or male relative's permission?

*Some consider male circumcision to be as well, but female circumcision takes place in an adolescent girl and she is held down forcibly and is awake during the "procedure."

One should not be throwing stones when one lives in a glass house...

look up CEDAW, or UNCRC

Edit: The US has not ratified it as far as I can see and chance of that happening is low..

I don't imagine newborns can consent and as you aware they are awake during the procedure. It should also be noted that male circumcision does a great deal more harm in both feeling and function than just removing the clitoral hood. As for being held down, well there is no need for that with a newborn. They can't very well resist.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. What butt kickin' are you referring to?

The dishonesty (or poor grasp of reality?) is nothing new but please dont highjack someone else's thread.

Honestly I haven't a clue what you are talking about. I am neither being dishonest or hijacking someone else's thread.

It sounds to me more like concessions made to the Islamic extremist nations. If that's what you mean by "very left wing" you must have a different definition of the phrase than I have.

Exactly the sort of thing I had in mind when I posted, "remember, we're talking about the world, not the USA." That's what happens in some of the extremist nations.

And they were intended as supporting examples. :)

No... the right have been claiming that the "libbos" are saying the UN is wonderful.. big difference.

As for being a joke.. the only real joke is the American right who think the UN is suppose to be some sort of world police force for only the nations that the US approve off..... which it was never thankfully designed for.. because if it was, the US would not even be allowed to be a member because it could not live up to its own ideals...

Yeah, the UN is doing exactly what it was designed to, when UN personel in Lebanon cache weapons and ammunition for the terrorists. That's why the UN is a joke.

And you again show your ignorance to how the UN works. Nothing new there.

Seriously? Well, in the Modern World, since the time of Mohammed.

And what? You have simplistic assumption about that no doubt.

Usually I'd concur when it comes to multiculturalism and Western self-flagellation run amok but the opposition stemmed from reactionary and conservative countries in Africa and Asia. In fact the democratic community showed some backbone and withdrew as co-sponsors (thirty plus countries) after the concession was issued. The problem is that there are culturally primitive countries in the world and they have a vote at the UN.

The analogy is not apt. Saying one shouldn't throw stones if you live in a glass house is supposed to be a way of expressing that you yourself have similar problems to the person you are criticizing. No reasonable person would claim the United States has a sinister record on women or childrens rights. That treaty ratification has been held up because of American political inertia is distinct from how it actually conducts itself on these issues. It is perfectly legitimate and laudable for the United States to join in international criticism of countries who sanction, protect, or excuse the kind of behavior expressed in the OP's article.

And what? You have simplistic assumption about that no doubt.

No because the US also has not ratified similar conventions on similar issues... so chances are they wont ratify this one.
