During the Taliban's 1996-2001 time in power, convicted adulterers were routinely shot or stoned in executions held mostly on Fridays. Women were not permitted to go out on their own, girls were barred from schools and men were obliged to grow long beards.

Providing fresh evidence popular support for the brutal punishment has endured, two lovers narrowly escaped being stoned in Baghlan province north of Kabul, but were publicly shot over the weekend instead, officials said

Isn't it wonderful we are engaged in America's longest war to protect the Afganis from Taliban rule??
So glad 2200 American's died for this cluster
:hm

A friend of mine from Pakistan told me a few years ago she wanted to get stoned. Not the kind with rocks though.

Do you think, if suddenly the Afghan people had TV's, money, roads, sports cars, booze etc, they would become like the rest of the "civilized" world in a generation or two. I think westren civilization is the biggest threat to Islam worldwide.

the general idea of "nationbuilding", and Biden's comment was to give the middle class a stake in their future;
and they would not be attracted to fundamentalist Islam. In Afg, since it is SO backwards, I doubt this would work outside of Kabul.

Perhaps other countries,(such as Muslims in the US), but a lot of these contries are theocratic in nature.

Best just to let them be.

Islam and civilized behavior go together like oil and water.
