However, those facilities run on intranets.

How exactly do you think the virus got into the nuclear facility? Did we use magic to get it in there?

If they are being blockaded from inspecting... they will know this.
And if they simply aren't being told anything, then they will have no idea what they aren't being told. And if they are being blocked from inspection, then they will have no idea what they aren't inspecting. Unlike our collection methods, which have the ability to do more than OSINT.

I'll go with the ones assessing with less guess work and more facts.

you post that as if it is an odd expectation

The North Korea comparison is actually relevant - we've played this game with an autocratic regime who perceived that nuclear weapons guaranteed regime survival before.

Think about all the money that we give to Pakistan for cripes' sake. We don't do that because they are our friends.

Your first part makes no attempt at addressing what I said. A hacker's virus doesn't know what I'm doing.

Your' second part acts as if nuclear professionals don't know how nuclear facilities work.

As for your third part... I'll refer you to WMD's in Iraq. "We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat." -- Donald Rumsfeld citing "intelligence" from the outside.

    Stuxnet...." Genius.

I have been troubleshooting and installing Variable Frequency Drives for years and when I learned about " Stuxnet" I kicked my self for not thinking of it first. Assuming they were running "Siemens" or even "Yaskawa" VFD's, I could have written the program my self.

They had to by pass the fail-safes in the drive firmware that registers faults when excessive motor RPM builds reverse EMF to the point of damaging the drive and motor and completely by pass the current and voltage overloads and turn off the dynamic braking.

Thing is those drives have internal hardware protection too. I've been wondering how they got around that ever since I heard about Stuxnet. Variable Frequency Drives are loaded with a massive amount of potential energy when they're in operation, ( 8 to 900 DC volt Bus with coke can sized capacitors ) and occasionally "DETONATE " ( no other way to describe it ) when they go haywire.

It must have been some light show.

I would love to see the actual Stuxnet program.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on Iranian nuclear program

Reading the Washington Post article on this, I praise the fact that that it was agreed upon to virtually halt the Iranian nuclear program as it stood before; nevertheless, I suspect that at some time, this deal will blow up in someone's face. Furthermore, Israel is still at the position of Zero Iranian Nuclear Program. I've been anticipating an Israeli attack on Iran for some time now. It may come sooner now to get rid of this deal. At any rate, this could end up being a great foreign policy achievement or a huge, potentially deadly, bust. Only time will tell now.

I know how it was done.

It's called jumping the "Air Gap."

US NAVY: Hackers 'Jumping The Air Gap' Would 'Disrupt The World Balance Of Power'

Speaking at last week's Defense One conference, retired Capt. Mark Hagerott cited recent reports about sonic computer viruses as one way that hackers could "jump the air gap" and target systems that are not connected to the Internet.

"If you take a cybernetic view of what's happening [in the Navy], right now our approach is unplug it or don't use a thumb drive," Hagerott said. But if hackers "are able to jump the air gap, we are talking about fleets coming to a stop."

For a long time the thought was that an air gap (systems that are not connected to the Internet) rendered networks pretty much impenetrable.

Then the Stuxnet virus happened — an Iranian nuclear scientist with an infected thumb drive walked a virus through the air gap and unknowingly uploaded a destructive virus onto a network controlling nuclear centrifuges. This attack not only damaged Iran's nuclear facilities, but it also signaled the dawn of kinetic cyber attacks (the kind that cause physical damage) and the revealed the vulnerability of air gaps..."<

That's all well and good but we can't let these Muslim sub-humans have nuclear weapons like the world's self-appointed policeman! Just who do these date munching goat tender monkeys think they are, our equals or somethin'?!!

Skeptically optimistic. I'm not willing to throw too many stones at naivete or incompetence until this unfolds more. My gut feeling is that we're being swindled and the administration is all too eager to do something positive and that is blinding their judgement. On the other hand, it's good to at least attempt to cool off the situation and avoid military action. That being said, we shouldn't run from it if Iran is looking for a brawl. Hopefully we'll be able to tell if we're being swindled well before an atomic weapon appears.

Way to throw in your own ignorant bias into the mix. As though we don't have enough of that as it is.
