US, Iran nuclear deal spurs bipartisan concern in Congress

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on Iranian nuclear program

It was a bad deal, all around.

Israel isn't going to tolerate Iran's continued push to build a nuclear weapon. It makes me wonder if we're approaching another "Wag the Dog Scenario "

Man. You're like Dick Morris. The more gung-ho you are, the more I love this deal.

I might plan a vacation to Iran this year.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on Iranian nuclear program

Really? What was bad about it? A republican wasn't president when this happened?

Details please...

February 9, 1993: The IAEA demands special inspections of two sites that are believed to store nuclear waste. The request is based on strong evidence that North Korea has been cheating on its commitments under the NPT. North Korea refuses the IAEA’s request.

March 12, 1993: Amid demands for special inspections, North Korea announces its intention to withdraw from the NPT in three months, citing Article X provisions that allow withdrawal for supreme national security considerations.

April 1, 1993: The IAEA declares that North Korea is not adhering to its safeguards agreement and that it cannot guarantee that North Korean nuclear material is not being diverted for nonpeaceful uses.

June 11, 1993: Following talks with the United States in New York, North Korea suspends its decision to pull out of the NPT just before the withdrawal would have become legally effective. North Korea also agrees to the full and impartial application of IAEA safeguards.

For its part, the United States grants assurances against the threat and use of force, including nuclear weapons. Washington also promises not to interfere with North Korea’s internal affairs.

July 19, 1993: After a second round of talks with the United States, North Korea announces in a joint statement that it is “prepared to begin consultations with the IAEA on outstanding safeguards and other issues” and that it is ready to negotiate IAEA inspections of its nuclear facilities. The joint statement also indicates that Pyongyang might consider a deal with the United States to replace its graphite nuclear reactors with light-water reactors (LWRs), which are proliferation resistant.

Late 1993: The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Defense Intelligence Agency estimate that North Korea had separated about 12 kilograms of plutonium. This amount is enough for at least one or two nuclear weapons.

1994

January 1994: The director of the CIA estimates that North Korea may have produced one or two nuclear weapons.

February 15, 1994: North Korea finalizes an agreement with the IAEA to allow inspections of all seven of its declared nuclear facilities, averting sanctions by the United Nations Security Council.

March 1, 1994: IAEA inspectors arrive in North Korea for the first inspections since 1993.

March 21, 1994: Responding to North Korea’s refusal to allow the inspection team to inspect a plutonium reprocessing plant at Yongbyon, the IAEA Board of Governors approves a resolution calling on North Korea to “immediately allow the IAEA to complete all requested inspection activities and to comply fully with its safeguards agreements.”

May 19, 1994: The IAEA confirms that North Korea has begun removing spent fuel from its 5-megawatt nuclear research reactor even though international monitors were not present. The United States and the IAEA had insisted that inspectors be present for any such action because spent fuel can potentially be reprocessed for use in nuclear weapons.

June 13, 1994: North Korea announces its withdrawal from the IAEA. This is distinct from pulling out of the NPT—North Korea is still required to undergo IAEA inspections as part of its NPT obligations. The IAEA contends that North Korea’s safeguards agreement remains in force. However, North Korea no longer participates in IAEA functions as a member state.

June 15, 1994: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter negotiates a deal with North Korea in which Pyongyang confirms its willingness to “freeze” its nuclear weapons program and resume high-level talks with the United States. Bilateral talks are expected to begin, provided that North Korea allows the IAEA safeguards to remain in place, does not refuel its 5-megawatt nuclear reactor, and does not reprocess any spent nuclear fuel."

I know you'd like to drive off topic to cover you asinine claims about this topic so I'll ask again... what is bad about this deal WITH IRAN?

Details please...

Just a clue here... I know you don't have any details because the topic was just posted and it's obvious you have yet to read a link... probably because you are too busy making claims about how bad it is.

This is comparable with North Korea, lifting sanctions and delivering oil and grain to North Korea if they would promise to dismantle their nuclear weapons program.

Clinton did it, G.W. Bush did it and Obama did it.

North Korea now has nukes.

There is no real deal.

I'm simply asking if you know anytihng about the details... at least enough to claim that it is bad. The simple fact that you guys are deflecting with NK and not even mentioning the details of this deal show you guys don't have a clue.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on Iranian nuclear program

From the link:

Yep. That's what the Iranians wanted all along, to quit enriching uranium, to halt progress on its nuclear program, and to neutralize its 20 percent enriched uranium.

And Obama should have insisted that they continue to enrich uranium, continue with their nuclear program, and keep their current stockpiles.

Obama gave in. Yespers, he just gave in to Iranian demands.

You can't be THAT gullible, can you ?

From what I got from Kerry, some sanctions will be lifted if Iran will negotiate to negotiate.

Like I said, this is comparable to 1969 when Nixon agreed to pull the battleship USS New Jersey off the Vietnam coast to get the North Vietnamese to even to start negotiating on having peace talks.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on Iranian nuclear program

now we can expect bibi to pressure the neocons in congress to undo this agreement by imposing new sanctions

How many times do we have to be lied to before we learn that " diplomacy equals continued enrichment " ?

If a pathetically poor Communist dictatorship could do it, don't you think Iran could too ?

You honestly think after Iran's huge investment that they would suspend their race toward building a nuclear weapon because we LIFTED SANCTIONS ?

The deal, intended as a first step toward a more comprehensive nuclear pact to be completed in six months, freezes or reverses progress at all of Iran’s major nuclear facilities, according to Western officials familiar with the details. It halts the installation of new centrifuges used to enrich uranium and caps the amount and type of enriched uranium that Iran is allowed to produce.

Right there in the links in the other thread about this that you've posted in.

So IYO we should stand outside bitching, complaining and throwing stones instead of having the IAEA on the inside getting the facts... Read something before bitching.

You really think that our collection and the Israeli's collection is inferior to what the Iranians decide to deliberately allow the IAEA to perform?

Yes. By far. People on the inside will know more than those on the outside. If they are being blockaded from inspecting... they will know this. I'll go with the ones assessing with less guess work and more facts.

I am reading through "All the Shah's Men", by your standard liberal-cookie-cutter-New-York-Times-Foreign-Correspondent type. In the forward, titled "the folly of attacking Iran", he holds up North Korea as an example of how trading diplomacy for de-nuclearization can work with regimes who only need the U.S. to convince them that we aren't going to be mean to them.

As if autocratic or ideologically-driven regimes have no desire for expansion, power, or to engage in regional politics outside of their bilateral relations with the U.S.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on Iranian nuclear program

Yes. By far. People on the inside will know more than those on the outside.

So the New York Times has "broken" (ie: been leaked to by the Administration) the story that the U.S. and Israel were responsible for the Stuxnet virus, an incredibly complex little bit of software that apparently was specifically designed to interface with the systems and hardware particular to Iranian nuclear facilities.

However, those facilities run on intranets.

How exactly do you think the virus got into the nuclear facility? Did we use magic to get it in there?

If they are being blockaded from inspecting... they will know this.

And if they simply aren't being told anything, then they will have no idea what they aren't being told. And if they are being blocked from inspection, then they will have no idea what they aren't inspecting. Unlike our collection methods, which have the ability to do more than OSINT.

I'll go with the ones assessing with less guess work and more facts.

 so, you'll go with the Israeli/US Intelligence communities, then? ;)

The North Korea comparison is actually relevant - we've played this game with an autocratic regime who perceived that nuclear weapons guaranteed regime survival before.

Think about all the money that we give to Pakistan for cripes' sake. We don't do that because they are our friends.

Your first part makes no attempt at addressing what I said. A hacker's virus doesn't know what I'm doing.

Your' second part acts as if nuclear professionals don't know how nuclear facilities work.

As for your third part... I'll refer you to WMD's in Iraq. "We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat." -- Donald Rumsfeld citing "intelligence" from the outside.

Stuxnet...." Genius.

I have been troubleshooting and installing Variable Frequency Drives for years and when I learned about " Stuxnet" I kicked my self for not thinking of it first. Assuming they were running "Siemens" or even "Yaskawa" VFD's, I could have written the program my self.

They had to by pass the fail-safes in the drive firmware that registers faults when excessive motor RPM builds reverse EMF to the point of damaging the drive and motor and completely by pass the current and voltage overloads and turn off the dynamic braking.

Thing is those drives have internal hardware protection too. I've been wondering how they got around that ever since I heard about Stuxnet. Variable Frequency Drives are loaded with a massive amount of potential energy when they're in operation, ( 8 to 900 DC volt Bus with coke can sized capacitors ) and occasionally "DETONATE " ( no other way to describe it ) when they go haywire.

It must have been some light show.

I would love to see the actual Stuxnet program.

Reading the Washington Post article on this, I praise the fact that that it was agreed upon to virtually halt the Iranian nuclear program as it stood before; nevertheless, I suspect that at some time, this deal will blow up in someone's face. Furthermore, Israel is still at the position of Zero Iranian Nuclear Program. I've been anticipating an Israeli attack on Iran for some time now. It may come sooner now to get rid of this deal. At any rate, this could end up being a great foreign policy achievement or a huge, potentially deadly, bust. Only time will tell now.

I know how it was done.

It's called jumping the "Air Gap."

US NAVY: Hackers 'Jumping The Air Gap' Would 'Disrupt The World Balance Of Power'

Speaking at last week's Defense One conference, retired Capt. Mark Hagerott cited recent reports about sonic computer viruses as one way that hackers could "jump the air gap" and target systems that are not connected to the Internet.

"If you take a cybernetic view of what's happening [in the Navy], right now our approach is unplug it or don't use a thumb drive," Hagerott said. But if hackers "are able to jump the air gap, we are talking about fleets coming to a stop."

For a long time the thought was that an air gap (systems that are not connected to the Internet) rendered networks pretty much impenetrable.

Then the Stuxnet virus happened — an Iranian nuclear scientist with an infected thumb drive walked a virus through the air gap and unknowingly uploaded a destructive virus onto a network controlling nuclear centrifuges. This attack not only damaged Iran's nuclear facilities, but it also signaled the dawn of kinetic cyber attacks (the kind that cause physical damage) and the revealed the vulnerability of air gaps..."<

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on Iranian nuclear program

I doubt it. NK is all about hostage situations for financial gain because they have no economy and they hate the west. While Iranians generally love westernized living and have economic structure. They have the ability to sustain themselves while NK does not.
That's all well and good but we can't let these Muslim sub-humans have nuclear weapons like the world's self-appointed policeman! Just who do these date munching goat tender monkeys think they are, our equals or somethin'?!!

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on Iranian nuclear program

Skeptically optimistic. I'm not willing to throw too many stones at naivete or incompetence until this unfolds more. My gut feeling is that we're being swindled and the administration is all too eager to do something positive and that is blinding their judgement. On the other hand, it's good to at least attempt to cool off the situation and avoid military action. That being said, we shouldn't run from it if Iran is looking for a brawl. Hopefully we'll be able to tell if we're being swindled well before an atomic weapon appears.
