French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear program

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

I keep seeing conflicting information. Is Arak going to be abandoned? Are they going to discard their HEU? Any word on their centrifuges or what the position on them now is? I keep seeing very vague headlines and articles.

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

Boy, you and the demsocialist what a pair! What link did you provide. Does any link show if Iran agrees it does not have the right to produce nuclear weapons.

On the first point, just showing that Obama lemmings don't need to know the details of what they think is great as long as their leader tells them it is, pathetic.

As usual I was right. You didn't read a damn thing. You simply just started bitching for no valid reason.

The concessions not only halt Iran’s nuclear advances but also make it virtually impossible for Tehran to build a nuclear weapon without being detected, the officials said. In return, Iran will receive modest relief of trade sanctions and access to some of its frozen currency accounts overseas, concessions said to be valued at less than $7 billion over the six-month term of the deal. The sanctions would be reinstated if Iran violates the agreement’s terms.

linkypoo...

Right there in one of the links you ignored on the first page.

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

What exactly are they verifying. Does their equipment keep producing nuclear material.

Read something. I can't keep bringing you paragraphs from the links you consistently ignore.

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

Sorry that was on the other thread on Navy's which i was reading
This article details some of the details Iran, six world powers clinch breakthrough nuclear deal | Reuters

Iran has committed to:

Halt all uranium enrichment above 5% purity
Not install or use any next-generation centrifuges to enrich uranium
Neutralise its stockpile of near-20% uranium
Halt further advances of its activities at the heavy-water plant at Arak and halt progress on its plutonium track
Increased monitoring by IAEA inspectors, including daily access at Natanz and Fordow nuclear sites
Provide IAEA access to centrifuge assembly facilities, uranium mines and mills
Provide more frequent inspector access to the Arak reactor

BBC News - Iran nuclear: Geneva talks 'reach deal'

For an interim agreement this seems worth exploring.

They are signing the nuclear non-proliferation treaty if that is what you mean. That means they agree not to develop nuclear weapon I think.......duh
Don't tell me you are mad that we don't get to go to war with Iran......
Or is it that you thought sanctions wouldn't work.

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

I did read the link and other articles. Nowhere does it say that Iran will stop producing nuclear material.

No you didn't read it. Start with Sherman's post #31 at the top of this page.

So I was correct. Iran will still be able to continue to enrich up to 5%. Must burn you when I am correct.

Man, you people's death grip on your corrupted ideology sure forces you into some awkward situations.

Hey, good thing this is the FIRST time we've ever tried to haggle with a America hating dictatorship who was absolutely bent on producing a atomic weapon.

Did you post a silly clapping hands emoticon when North Korea detonated their first nuclear weapon ?

WHY were they exceeding the 5% enrichment in the first place ?

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

WHY were they exceeding the 5% enrichment in the first place ?

Because they either want/wanted nuclear break-out capacity or a bomb. Likely the former.

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

So I was correct. Iran will still be able to continue to enrich up to 5%. Must burn you when I am correct.

In my post #27 where I replied to YOUR post which you apparently ignored somehow...

Also... as far as you imagining you are right:

Uranium enriched to 20 percent or more U-235 is called HEU. Uranium enriched above the natural U-235 abundance but to less than 20 percent is called low-enriched (LEU).

many stages are needed to produce the highly enriched uranium needed for a weapon

linkypoo...

Combine that with Sherman's post #31 I just referred you to that you didn't read... again... This deal does this:

Halt all uranium enrichment above 5% purity
Not install or use any next-generation centrifuges to enrich uranium
Neutralise its stockpile of near-20% uranium
Halt further advances of its activities at the heavy-water plant at Arak and halt progress on its plutonium track
Increased monitoring by IAEA inspectors, including daily access at Natanz and Fordow nuclear sites
Provide IAEA access to centrifuge assembly facilities, uranium mines and mills
Provide more frequent inspector access to the Arak reactor

And voila. You couldn't be more wrong no matter how hard you try.

Good night folks. Don't forget to tip your waitresses and bartenders. I'll be here all week.

So this is saying that we are going to pay them $6+Billion in "relief"? Really?
Hell, sanction me for a little while if you are going to lift them later and I make a profit on the "relief"...

Uhg...

You post such irrelevant nonsense.

February 9, 1993: The IAEA demands special inspections of two sites that are believed to store nuclear waste. The request is based on strong evidence that North Korea has been cheating on its commitments under the NPT. North Korea refuses the IAEA’s request.

March 12, 1993: Amid demands for special inspections, North Korea announces its intention to withdraw from the NPT in three months, citing Article X provisions that allow withdrawal for supreme national security considerations.

April 1, 1993: The IAEA declares that North Korea is not adhering to its safeguards agreement and that it cannot guarantee that North Korean nuclear material is not being diverted for nonpeaceful uses.

June 11, 1993: Following talks with the United States in New York, North Korea suspends its decision to pull out of the NPT just before the withdrawal would have become legally effective. North Korea also agrees to the full and impartial application of IAEA safeguards.

For its part, the United States grants assurances against the threat and use of force, including nuclear weapons. Washington also promises not to interfere with North Korea’s internal affairs.

July 19, 1993: After a second round of talks with the United States, North Korea announces in a joint statement that it is “prepared to begin consultations with the IAEA on outstanding safeguards and other issues” and that it is ready to negotiate IAEA inspections of its nuclear facilities. The joint statement also indicates that Pyongyang might consider a deal with the United States to replace its graphite nuclear reactors with light-water reactors (LWRs), which are proliferation resistant.

Late 1993: The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Defense Intelligence Agency estimate that North Korea had separated about 12 kilograms of plutonium. This amount is enough for at least one or two nuclear weapons.

1994

January 1994: The director of the CIA estimates that North Korea may have produced one or two nuclear weapons.

February 15, 1994: North Korea finalizes an agreement with the IAEA to allow inspections of all seven of its declared nuclear facilities, averting sanctions by the United Nations Security Council.

March 1, 1994: IAEA inspectors arrive in North Korea for the first inspections since 1993.

March 21, 1994: Responding to North Korea’s refusal to allow the inspection team to inspect a plutonium reprocessing plant at Yongbyon, the IAEA Board of Governors approves a resolution calling on North Korea to “immediately allow the IAEA to complete all requested inspection activities and to comply fully with its safeguards agreements.”

May 19, 1994: The IAEA confirms that North Korea has begun removing spent fuel from its 5-megawatt nuclear research reactor even though international monitors were not present. The United States and the IAEA had insisted that inspectors be present for any such action because spent fuel can potentially be reprocessed for use in nuclear weapons.

June 13, 1994: North Korea announces its withdrawal from the IAEA. This is distinct from pulling out of the NPT—North Korea is still required to undergo IAEA inspections as part of its NPT obligations. The IAEA contends that North Korea’s safeguards agreement remains in force. However, North Korea no longer participates in IAEA functions as a member state.

June 15, 1994: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter negotiates a deal with North Korea in which Pyongyang confirms its willingness to “freeze” its nuclear weapons program and resume high-level talks with the United States. Bilateral talks are expected to begin, provided that North Korea allows the IAEA safeguards to remain in place, does not refuel its 5-megawatt nuclear reactor, and does not reprocess any spent nuclear fuel. "

No need to be snide.....

The conjunction AND makes it sound like there will be monetary consessions as well... Not just the unfreezing of assets.

Well said but your previous post read like a hand out of "here ya go!!!!" money.

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

Well said but your previous post read like a hand out of "here ya go!!!!" money.

That is why I was asking the question... I did not know and did not have time to look it up. If it was "here ya go money" I would have been pissed. But, now that I have had a little time to read the White House brief, I see that it is not the case,
Fact Sheet: First Step Understandings Regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran
Limited, Temporary, Reversible Relief

In return for these steps, the P5+1 is to provide limited, temporary, targeted, and reversible relief while maintaining the vast bulk of our sanctions, including the oil, finance, and banking sanctions architecture. If Iran fails to meet its commitments, we will revoke the relief. Specifically the P5+1 has committed to:

· Not impose new nuclear-related sanctions for six months, if Iran abides by its commitments under this deal, to the extent permissible within their political systems.

· Suspend certain sanctions on gold and precious metals, Iran’s auto sector, and Iran’s petrochemical exports, potentially providing Iran approximately $1.5 billion in revenue.

· License safety-related repairs and inspections inside Iran for certain Iranian airlines.

· Allow purchases of Iranian oil to remain at their currently significantly reduced levels – levels that are 60% less than two years ago. $4.2 billion from these sales will be allowed to be transferred in installments if, and as, Iran fulfills its commitments.

· Allow $400 million in governmental tuition assistance to be transferred from restricted Iranian funds directly to recognized educational institutions in third countries to defray the tuition costs of Iranian students.

Putting Limited Relief in Perspective

In total, the approximately $7 billion in relief is a fraction of the costs that Iran will continue to incur during this first phase under the sanctions that will remain in place. The vast majority of Iran’s approximately $100 billion in foreign exchange holdings are inaccessible or restricted by sanctions.

In the next six months, Iran’s crude oil sales cannot increase. Oil sanctions alone will result in approximately $30 billion in lost revenues to Iran – or roughly $5 billion per month – compared to what Iran earned in a six month period in 2011, before these sanctions took effect. While Iran will be allowed access to $4.2 billion of its oil sales, nearly $15 billion of its revenues during this period will go into restricted overseas accounts. In summary, we expect the balance of Iran’s money in restricted accounts overseas will actually increase, not decrease, under the terms of this deal.

Good find. And WOW... $100 billion. Just imagine if they booted those crackpot mullahs from power what kind of flowing economy they could be having for their people.

I'm very hopeful for Iran in their electing a moderate guy and if the economy starts really moving for the people their while he's in power... it could really forge a giant wedge between the political power and the religious mullah power in that country.

I was thinking along the same lines.
How the West dragged them into the 20th century by force, coercion, and corruption, is a topic for another day... BUT... Iran was a part of the modern world until the overthrow in 79. Then they backslid.... not unlike Iraq is doing now.

I harbor no ill will against the Iranian people and sincerely hope they embrace this more moderate movement by their foreign minister.

Re: French foreign minister: Iran, 6 world powers reach deal on iranian nuclear progr

I think this agreement/deal is worth a try. Whether it is good or bad history will have to decide, none of us today can with 100% certainity say one way or the other. Even with all the sanctions in place Iran was going to develop the bomb. There is nothing wrong with being leery over this deal, I am too. But doing nothing lets Iran continue on the pace they are now and will achieve their goal. Now agreeing to this deal brings hope that something can be worked out later where Iran does not develop the bomb, but nothing is guaranteed. Are we taking a chance? Sure we are. But as I have stated, doing nothing will still lead to Iran getting the bomb. In negotiations like these, there always have to be a little give and a little take, each side must compromise a bit in hopes a more comprehensive and lasting deal can be reached later.

Again there is no guarantee one way or the other with this deal. President Obama might end up looking like another Neville Chamberlain. But there is the chance this may actually lead to the desired results we want. I am willing to give the President the benefit of the doubt on this and let history sit in judgment. It is a gamble to be sure, but doing nothing still would result in Iran obtaining the bomb. Give it a try, it could succeed. If it doesn't, what exactly have we lost?
