Senate approves nuclear option

more faux outrage and hyperbole--I haven't had my does of FOX yet today--waiting till Megyn--
Democracy...specifically Social Democracy...is merely a step toward Communism. Read Marx.

Grassley threatened it today on the SCOTUS, which Reid left out--
soon Reid will need to complete the nuclear option with legislation--
maybe then the GOP will come to its senses -
Threating to use it in the future will come back to bite Republicans as well. When they do use it they will be accused of hypocrisy for opposing it today.

Anything and everything the democrats can do to circumvent the established rules in order to shove their abominable agenda down the throats of America they'll do. This should be no surprise.

Obama has a tendency to conjure the name of Ronald Reagan in much that he does, likes to try to compare himself to the Gipper.

Well, I for one am not a huge fan of Reagan.

There is one thing that Reagan did which Obama has failed at miserably. He made us proud to be American.

Now, some Obama leg humper is undoubtedly going to say, "This is Reid, Obama had absolutely nothing to do with it, it is a issue of the Legislative branch not the Executive, you Obama haters just will do anything to drag his name into the mud, no matter who does what!!"

To them I will say -- Grow up. Stop being naive. This is done with the sole intention of stacking the bench with ideologically aligned judiciaries who'll march lock and step with the worldview Obama has for us. If you don't think Reid, Pelosi, and Obama haven't been commiserating, than you really know nothing about political affairs and perhaps your time would be better spent on Pinterest than on a political chat forum.

Well, the smartest thing they could do is promise to restore the original rules when they retake the majority. However, all I've heard them say is general condemnation of the move. They've not threatened to use it to their advantage when they take the majority.

That's what everyone is saying though. "just wait till we get the Senate back, youll rue the day!"

Well, half the people may be cheering him on. I have a personal bone to pick with Hapless Harry and his re-election, thanks to the TP, sticks in my craw.

Craw - theres a word I haven't seen for a while.

We'll see how this sorts itself out.

I feel ya... i could choke the hell of of sharon angle and her handlers

Today the senate just became another House of Representatives. From this day forward any party who has the majority in the senate now is free to dispense with a filibuster with only 51 votes. The Precedence has been set. The idea or American ideal as John Adams put it, that we are “A nation of laws and not of man,” is gone. Anytime any party with a simple majority can change the rules and the law that had applied to suit themselves or the man, the nation of law and rules is gone. The rule of man has superseded the rule of law.

If anyone thinks this will stop here, it won’t. Both parties are now free to change rules that protected the minority party to suit the majority; tyranny of the majority is at hand. When one party controls both chambers of congress and the president, it is now free to repeal any and all laws that have been passed by their opposition party when they were in power; there is nothing now to stop them. No checks or balances on absolute power of a simple majority and that party can pass and enact any legislation it wants as long as it controls both chambers of congress and the presidency. If the Republicans were to gain back the senate, keep control of the house and win the presidency in 2016, I wouldn’t be surprised if they used this Senator Harry Reid Precedence to repeal Obamacare, to cut taxes on the rich, perhaps abolish the corporate tax, privatize social security, abolish the EPA, the labor board, and I could go on and on. All they have to do is use the precedence set today by Harry Reid as he abolished the rights of the minority.

So you are trying to say that McConnell isn't filibustering more...it's just that Harry is asking the senate to stop filibustering more?
HA!:lamo

In the definition of the word, McConnell filibustering nearly as often as Reid did. The vast majority of the cloture votes are being called by Reid and succeeding. There was a higher rate of filibusters in the 109th Senate when Democrats were in the minority than there has been in any following Senate. You only have more cloture votes because Reid calls them at more than twice the rate of previous Senate Majority Leaders.

and your hands are therefore clean by damning both sides--

whine partisan while offering nothing--GOP-like--
Libertarian is just another word for nothing left to lose--
disowning all your votes and saying you're not at fault for the Nation's problems..

of course a GOP partisan hack like you doesn't care

is there anymore idiot yammerings you'd like to get off your chest or are you about done?

GOP hack ... you don't read real well do ya.....

yup.......

Yeah, them plotting to do it and them actually doing it are two entirely different things.
I would never underestimate Mcconnell..Trashing PPACA is all about getting the Senate back..
I can't in good conscience consider this to be the right path.
You are magnanimous, especially after the 5-year Cantor Coup and unprecedented sabotage of PPACA..
This approval will only further divide the country with a winner takes all mentality and definitely opens up the flood gates for more oppressive means of silencing any group and passing all laws.
There comes a time when a Country can no further be divided unless guns are fired, which we have now reached again..
There is a reason the founders didn't want simple majorities in the senate
the Founders could not have imagined a Country so gone wrong, even as scandalous as they were
I can understand certain cases where a simple majority would be necessary but the senate is the last place we should only need a simply majority to pass legislation.
and that is coming--this has the stamp of Elizabeth Warren all over it--we've had enuff Hatuey

IMO: Reid has essentially made the Senate a rubber stamp for the House and the most valuable piece of the puzzle. What happens when there is a Republican House, Republican Senate and Republican President? It happened in the early 2000s. It can happen again and when it does, Democrats will get a serious ass whooping and Reid will be crucified.
So be it..Obama should get to be President at least three years without complete sabotage..he still has the GOP House of Horrors that absolutely refuses to pass any legislation, even their own bills .

No question about it this is a sad day for our country.

Senator Obama 2005 on the filibuster:

SENATOR BARACK OBAMA (D-ILLINOIS): The American people sent us here to be their voice. They understand that those voices can at times become loud and argumentative, but they also hope that we can disagree without being disagreeable. […]

What they don't expect is for one party - be it Republican or Democrat - to change the rules in the middle of the game so that they can make all the decisions while the other party is told to sit down and keep quiet. […]

The American people want less partisanship in this town, but everyone in this chamber knows that the majority chooses to end the filibuster. If they choose to change the rules and put an end to Democratic debate, then the fighting and the bitterness and the gridlock will only get worse.

Now I understand that Republicans are getting a lot of pressure to do this from factions outside the chamber, but we need to rise above the "ends justify the means" mentality because we're here to answer to the people - all of the people - not just the ones that are wearing our particular party label. […]

If the right of free and open debate is taken away from the minority party, and the millions of Americans who asked us to be their voice, I fear that the already partisan atmosphere in Washington will be poisoned to the point where no one will be able to agree on anything. That doesn't serve anyone's best interests, and it certainly isn't what the patriots who founded this democracy had in mind. We owe the people who sent us here more than that - we owe them much more.

such as filling court vacancies--
repubs finally went too far--
especially last night stopping a vote on the Sen. Gillibrand amendment .

Vice President Biden, then Senator back in 2005

Speaking on the Senate floor in May of 2005, Biden said, "At its core, the filibuster is not about stopping a nominee or a bill, it's about compromise and moderation. The nuclear option extinguishes the power of independents and moderates in the Senate. That's it, they're done. Moderates are important if you need to get to 60 votes to satisfy cloture; they are much less so if you only need 50 votes. Let's set the historical record straight. Never has the Senate provided for a certainty that 51 votes could put someone on the bench or pass legislation."
When the Senate was considering President George W. Bush's nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court, Biden held out the prospect of a filibuster to block it. "If he really believes that reapportionment is a questionable decision … then clearly, clearly, you'll find a lot of people, including me, willing to do whatever they can to keep him off the court," Biden said, adding, "That would include a filibuster, if need be."
During his years in the Senate, Biden could be counted on to routinely join Democratic efforts to support filibusters of Republican programs--from the second President Bush's energy bill to the first President Bush's effort to cut the tax on capital gains in order to stimulate the U.S. economy and blunt the impact of the early-'90s recession. Now that he is vice president, and the entire Obama agenda is imperiled, he has changed his mind in an apparent deathbed conversion. It won't last.

who would you vote for Navy--Palin--Paul--Perry--Cruz--Rubio--Santorum--
they will split their votes in the 45 primaries--the 5 state caucuses mean little--
check out the number of Repub primaries with Open or Modified primaries--
or whether their delegates are winner-take-all or proportioned--CC in a landslide

I like all those people and would vote for any who got the nomination...........In order in would be Paul, Cruz, Rubio, Christie, Santorum..I don't believe Perrry or Palin have a chance.

There is one thing that Reagan did which Obama has failed at miserably. He made us proud to be American.
it has been your choice to not be a proud American under Obama--not his failure--own up to your choices--

86 for 43 Presients versus 82 for Obama--all one needs to know

This is false which is all anyone needs to know.

What do you think of Gov. Walker defending Gov. Christie as a conservative,
going against the daily turd droppings from plagiarizer Paul ??
I like all those people and would vote for any who got the nomination...........In order in would be Paul, Cruz, Rubio, Christie, Santorum..I don't believe Perrry or Palin have a chance.

Democracy...specifically Social Democracy...is merely a step toward Communism. Read Marx.
I guess it depends on your point of view. Marx saw Communism as the goal so he saw social democracy as a stepping stone towards it.
If one sees social democracy as the goal communism is regarded as the ideal gone way too far.
None of it is etched in stone just because Marx wrote it...unless of course you are a communist and I don't believe you are.
