Typhoon Haiyan: Navy carrier reaches devastated Philippine coast - World News

Carrier brings Aid to the Philippines where so far the response by the government has been ineffective and slow. This is another example of the amazing humanitarian effort performed by the US military, a thankless job for which they get little credit worldwide but in an age where every other US military news article is a negative it's nice to read this.

We always done this for people in need yet, there are those who see downsizing our carrier groups as the answer.

Wonder if other countries would come to our shores if the shoe was on the other foot?

I think certain countries would, don't forget the global outpouring of grief and anger after 9/11 and the demand for justice.

I do remember that although the devastation was small in comparison.

Well, I don't mind us sending the Washington SG for assistance......they estimate they will have to be there for 2 weeks. We will be using the Ospreys for assistance. Conducting Operations from the carrier which can help with the drinking water there. Plus flight operations.

How much do you think this costs?

Obama also sent 20 million dollars in aide for them.

Do you think we should be throwing out 20 million dollars when we are in the Middle of a Stop Gap measure, have no agreements on any budget, and also that fact that we need the money ourselves and also are in a Sequester?

That is a whole lot of dimes. Naturally we will never be told what this money was actually appropriated for - in other words, what other spending was cut to allow it to be used as foreign disaster aid instead. Budgeting is about making choices and typically includes savings yet we constantly hear that any tiny decrease (even in proposed increases) in federal spending will have "devastating" consequences.

I think that the Carrier would be doing operations anyway, so the cost is minimized as sop, just in a different neighborhood. I am anti military offense budget but I'm certainly not against this operation. I was in Sangley Point and Cavite City in the 60s and really enjoyed it. Pretty nice people over there, same as anywhere else. The water and food that the carrier can supply and hospital services are wonderful. It can practically replace a city administered infrastructure. It's nice to see a humanitarian use for our military instead of attacking alleged "terrorists."

Mornin Ttwtt. :2wave: As far as I know Congress hasn't appropriated anything. This was a straight call from Obama.

Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and others in that region can send assistance too. Let them and others front up some of that money aid. If the Europeans think they can afford to throw away money then let them.

We need to stop being the one to set any example other than we show up for assistance. Then we conduct rescue ops help out with what we can and head off back to our business.

Well, it would but not in that region. Still Like I said I can for the Rescue and the cost of the Carrier group. But then we don't need to flop out 20 million when we need the money ourselves.

That 20 million would be better spent here and on some sort of infrastructure.

would it though? Why not look at that 20 million dollars as a investment towards the US global brand which has been damaged recently with the drone stories, NSA spying, gov shutdowns etc.

Yes it would.....well that bit about showing up and helping out with rescue operations and sending a SCG to give assistance. Doing so and better and than most others.

Kind of like, puts that New Light Perspective on all those that watch and want to say anything about perception.

As my thought is......they sure wouldn't like to find out what it is like in not having such assistance show up to help them out now, would they?

Interesting though that the American military are helping with the relief project, the UK is sending massive amounts of aid as are other nations and yet China is right there and offers nothing.

Yeah, and I think Russia is on that side of the Planet too.

It goes to illustrate that the world would be a much sadder place, were it not for The United States being the leading world power.

This event is another example of why it's important for us to maintain a strong military.

Sorry bro, we can't even fix the Obamacare website with 20 mil. But we can help some people that really need it. I think it's a great investment personally. And I'm hugely against the way we are usually used.

Navy Corpsmen?
Lol. Yeah, they play a part. Passing out motrin and telling people to drink water. Which is pretty much what every Corpsmen tells a Marine to do for everything from a cold to a femoral bleed lol.

20 million is a drop in the bucket compared to the billions in pork that congressmen take home to their districts.

US Navy Carrier brings much needed aid to the devastated coast of the Philippines!

this is the kind of mission that i wholeheartedly support. i hope that someday this becomes the vast majority of our global actions.

:lamo Until you really need us . . . I will remind everyone once again; The Marines are always looking for a few good men . . . Navy Corpsman.

Its more than 20 Million with the CSG now.....with more to come. Just with the ME Countries alone we are popping over a couple Billion.

Heya Moot.

Like I said.....costs for the CSG and for the entire time it is there. So one need remember that when always rescuing others. Fuel for the ships, planes, Water, food. The whole works. For the entire time it is there. Considered it a running tab.

Seems some should also keep that in mind when they want to talk about gutting the Military. Sure would hate to see we can't get to anything around to help due to one party's foolishness.

Heya MTP :2wave: .....we can help with rescue and the drinking water. 20 mil here and there has been adding up all this time. So it has to start somewhere. Which these politicaqns need to be reminded of......just because they are allowed to play where the Big Boyz play. Doesn't mean they are playing with their own money.
