Pot problems in Colorado schools increase with legalization - The Denver Post

"GRAND JUNCTION — In two years of work as an undercover officer with a drug task force, Mike Dillon encountered plenty of drugs. But nothing has surprised him as much as what he has seen in schools lately.

Dillon, who is now a school resource officer with the Mesa County Sheriff's Department, said he is seeing more and younger kids bringing marijuana to schools, in sometimes-surprising quantities.

"When we have middle school kids show up with a half an ounce, that is shocking to me," Dillon said."

Who could have foreseen this? It's a mystery...

The only problem I see cited is that kids are being expelled for possession

Just proving that the argument made by the potheads that there wouldn't be an increase in children using pot was... well, the product of a pot smokers impaired mental capacities.

The problem is that children are using pot in higher numbers.

I can just see those school administrators thinking "Hmmm, how can we teach those kids a lesson for smoking something that interferes with their ability to learn....I KNOW!!! Let's expel them!"

Don't you think you are a bit premature in your prediction? Of course anytime you decriminalize something there is a rush to the void then it calms down.

I think it was a mayor of Amsterdam that said, (paraphrasing) "We've done it... we've finally made pot boring."

Once the luster of doing something once considered edgy had it's edge taken off, people didn't give that much of a damn about it.

And children's brains are developing. In my opinion this is pretty bad. But this happens when a drug is first legalized. Everyone wants to abuse it. Then it tailors off. Just read up on the abuse of drugs behaviors of liberal European countries. I remember specifically the Netherlands legalized shrooms. There was a huge surge is shroom abuse, and then it tapered off.

Yes, even in states that haven't legalized it.
The National Institute of Drug Abuse found that marijuana use has climbed among 10th- and 12th-graders nationally, while the use of other drugs and alcohol has held steady or declined.

I don't think this shows that. Could very well be the ones that already smoked pot are now just bringing it to school with them. They need to know it's still illegal for minors to possess.

Somebody has to wash our cars, dance around waving signs in front of pizza restaurants, mow lawns, etc. Might as well be the Liberal's kids. Leaves more room at the professional schools for our children.

This is all it takes to make them happy so it's all good.

Is it possible that the officers are making an effort to find more kids with weed and not that the number of users has grown? Seems like a strong possibility. Violent crime rates in America have gone down to historically low levels yet there are more people than ever in jail. Is this because more people are committing crimes or because more criminals have been legislated into existence?

Pot usage, even among teens, has been increasing dramatically over the past 40 years in every state. You need data showing the rate of teenagers who use pot compared to other states during the same time period.

A "Oh yeah this one guy says it totally seems like more" is not 'proving' jack ****.

We on the other hand actually have data that shows countries who have legal/easier-access to pot have lower rates of teenage use. What the hell do you have?

Actually, regulating the drug introduces product and age controls in what is currently a black market that is much more accessible to minors and completely uncontrolled.

So other than this one shabby article, where is the evidence that pot use is increasing among children as a result of this law?

Re: Pot problems in Colorado schools increase with legalization Read more: Pot probl

I think progressive ideas ****s kids brains up.....

Re: Pot problems in Colorado schools increase with legalization Read more: Pot probl

With the legalization of weed ends the stigma it brings with it, not only that but parents undoubtedly have eased the "hide the weed from the kids" mentality (not that it is ever hidden) and it's lying around more, like a bottle of Scotch. With it being a "new toy" it isn't surprising that you'd see a short term increase in children playing show and tell and maybe taking in the occasional toke. I would have to think it would be considered cool to show off mommy and daddy's stash.

Half an o isn't that big a deal, that's carry around weight where it is illegal for many...

That's shocking? I remember buying my first dime in jr high from another student. Dude had a ton of dope in his backpack every day, individually wrapped baggies and pre rolled joints. By the time I got to high school, kids went from selling pot and adderall pills, to cocaine and oxycontins. And this is in Texas, where they don't go soft on drug crime at all, let alone stand to legalize pot in the next century. Seriously, if this cop is legitimately shocked by kids having HP's of dope, I have to wonder what the hell he's been doing, because public schools and drugs go hand in hand.

Yes, it is a well known fact that neither Republicans nor kids of Republicans smoke pot. If you don't believe me, ask Ted Nugent

Yes, you had your first toke early. Hooray for you. In Colorado we are seeing MORE pot in school because of the law. It isn't shocking, it just happens to be what many opponents said would happen when pot was legalized.

Or "Hmmmm... what can I do to keep these douchebags from interfering with the rest of my students ability to learn... I know, EXPEL THEM!"

Do you have statistics on this? Has drinking become boring to high schoolers?

And Netherlands is currently rethinking its marijuana laws because of the detrimental effect it is having on there country. Turns out potheads aren't such a great element even when smoking legally. Again, who knew?!
