Hawaii poised to allow gay marriage after House passes bill despite public 'filibuster'

Hawaii, one of the first states where gay and lesbian couples fought for the right to wed, is poised to become the latest state to grant same-sex marriage after lawmakers on Friday approved legislation amid passionate public debate.
The state House of Representatives passed the bill, 30-19. It heads back to the Senate, which approved an earlier version of the legislation and is expected to re-convene on Tuesday.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie has indicated he would swiftly sign the measure into law, making Hawaii the 15th or 16th U.S. state to extend marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples, depending on if he signs the legislation before the governor of Illinois does so with a newly passed same-sex marriage bill there on Nov. 20.“We have a red line that’s dividing the community,” said Rep. Richard Lee Fale, a Republican who urged the Legislature to let the issue go before a popular referendum instead. “Let the people vote.”
“This is about equal rights,” countered Republican Rep. Cynthia Thielen. “Let the Legislature vote.”

Fifteen states plus the District of Columbia allow same-sex marriage. Thirty-three states, excluding Hawaii, prohibit same-sex marriage. Many of those state bans also face legal challenges, with nearly 30 lawsuits filed across the country after two Supreme Court decisions {just} in the summer that favored gay marriage rights.

Yep its basically just a re-vote at this point

Yeah hopefully ill get to see my state real soon.

Theres already THREE different court cases in the works
Our Attorney General already said she will not defend the sate law that bans it because its unconstitutional.

Pat Toomey was one of the republican senators that voted for ENDA

We also have a bill amending the law that has been referred

and many cities including most of our biggest have non-discrimination laws

so we are getting there but not quite but my guess is PA will have equal rights by the end of 2014 or sooner! :)

I love these threads, J. It's great to see pure good news sometimes. It's great to watch this unfold.

Me too and i agree

especially with our media, most doom and gloom so when good news this large is going on i like posting it.

I also agree it is great watching it unfold, like i have said before there was a time when i never thought id see equal rights for gays be granted and protected, I thought id be dead and gone but my kid would see it in her life time. But now thats no longer true, the reality is, its right around the corner. I get to live in this great history in the making, i get to witness equal rights spread through the county and discrimination and bigotry lose. Its an awesome feeling actually.

Re: Hawaii poised to allow gay marriage after House passes bill despite public 'filib

Hawaii is "where it all started", as I understand.

Their Supreme Court ruled back in 1993 that denying same-sex couples marriage licenses is a violation of equal protection under the state Constitution. (Baehr v. Lewin). Just twenty years later....

I also agree it is great watching it unfold.

Illinois is scheduled to join in ten days.

Re: Hawaii poised to allow gay marriage after House passes bill despite public 'filib

Yeah given that they took 20 years, i have to think it's all new urgency after DOMA was struck down. Until that happened, none of this mattered so much. Although, after i heard the college team changed their name back to "Rainbow Warriors," i knew it was kind of inevitable haha.

I caught some of the live debate for once and the vote, and i have to say it was ecstasy to hear the "let the people vote" over and over, the parade of bigotry that was the 29 amendments, and whoever that devil lady in the red dress was, to see them all completely ignored. That's right where the haters belong.
