They aren't conspiring - they're contributing to it. You're muddling the issue here. The real issue isn't who started Common Core or who funded it, the issue is the fact that parents, teachers, school boards, states cannot change the Common Core standards in any way. Are you saying you dispute that fact?

So you're calling your reps about Common Core too, right?

Not yet. I can't say I care as much about this. Trust me, if I'm riled up enough to start posting videos on youtube about how Bill and Melinda Gates are conspiring to teach our children the evils of science, I'll also be contacting my representatives.

In many ways it does have to do with who started and funded the effort. It bothers me personally that the public was fed misinformation that classroom teachers helped design them when in fact we had some say after the fact so no we didn't have a hand in the design. Again, I wonder how many teachers in third grade would agree having students read several perspective of a topic and critique the differences in POV of each author in composition form??? If they can't pull all these skills together they are deemed below the standard.

Her presentation is all on about a conspiracy. A conspiracy put forth by THAT Bill Ayers. I'm questioning her and the posting of that video as an authority on the subject. She puts forth a timeline concocted to push CC through states in an underhanded manner.

Also the same could be said about NCLB. If states wished to keep receiving Federal funding, the had to jump through those hoops. There was no opt out by states, districts and parents, until
the Obama administration permitted opt out of NCLB.

This is the important stuff. We canít get lost in discrimination. We canít get lost in B.S. We canít get lost tearing each other down. I want to make a point here that no matter what you look like, where you come from, how you worship, who you love, how you identify, and yeah, how you run, that if you have good public policy ideas, if you are well qualified for office, bring those ideas to the table, because this is your America, too. This is our commonwealth of Virginia, too.

No, you're muddling what she said. She said that they, along with the DC establishment, are foisting the standards on the states.

She says "this effort of progressive education (*air quotes*) reformers...with lavish funding from...Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. They realized the need to make this look like a state-generated initiative..." and the paranoia continues from there

And yes, I dispute your "fact". States can drop out of CC if they choose to do so. They just will not continue to get the CC grants from the feds anymore, but the curriculum is decided by the state

I taught 3rd grade and you're right - that is a high bar to climb for a 9 year old.

I'm teaching 1st grade now and I was totally appalled by the crappy math Common Core standards. They removed counting money --- using a ruler --- telling time to the half hour ---- I was just shocked.

So you have no disputes with the actual facts in the videos, just her opinions. I guess we'll leave that there then.

The actual "facts" she recites have nothing to do with how the standards will affect the classroom and student performance.
