On the surface, this may look inappropriate. But in reality, it's a reasonable, cost-effective strategy. There are plenty of criminals out there that haven't been caught that access information. At least we know where to find these guys.
Giving felons your SS number is in another league than your credit card number.

No background checks for people with access to Social Security numbers and other personal information?

Hope none of you have signed up yet. As if you could have.
There are many felons that are one-timers. Did something enormously stupid, and are serving their time.

Why would this be any different then giving the information to some bloke you've never met before?

Yup....so what? You want to say they've had the life cause they got health insurance in prison? Or claim Tue don't deserve it at their job even though that's where many of us get our primary insurance from?

Saying "felons got a job" without explaining what the felony is or how it negatively impacts their ability to do the job is nothing more than emotional deflection. I consider only rational arguments.

Not every felon is a thief and not every thief is necessarily smart enough to pull off an identity theft with access to that information because Crack is Whack, man.

In the article, it explains that the background checks are not a requirement written into the federal law. But each state, who is in charge of hiring these people and writing the policies, can make it a requirement. And since the state has it in their best interest to create a good system, I'm assuming they will require background checks for any employee privy to personal information.

The title is misleading. What she really said is that the federal law doesn't require background checks for "navigators."

Frankly, the much bigger issue is the possibility of hackers getting your personal information. If you have a credit card, or do online banking (I'm sure there are other scenarios in addition to these) then your information could always be stolen. Being worried about a felon stealing your information as opposed to a hacker seems absurd. I work in a field where people have access to social security numbers and other sensitive information, and let me tell you -- anybody can steal your information. It's usually the ones you wouldn't expect. Anyway I don't care. That's what I'm saying. I really don't care. I'm worried about the health care law because I see that a lot of people are having to pay more. I'm hopeful but worried and I really don't care about this.

It's just more "redistribution" that Obama didn't tell people about. Come'on. Somebody that did a five or ten year stretch was out of the loop for awhile and probably needs a cash advancement. It wouldn't be fair for him to not have what working people have.

Have you ever tried to put a fire out with gas?

As a matter of fact, no; as a matter of allegory, yes.

Gee - nice display of fetid hot air. I'm feeling duly chastised by your superior view of your own intellect.

Just semantics, but isn't a "hacker" just a felon who hasn't yet been caught?
