Syria polio outbreak confirmed by WHO

As if a civil war wasn't hard enough on the citizens of Syria. Now they have to deal with this:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 10 cases of polio in Syria - the first outbreak in the country in 14 years.

The UN body says a further 12 cases are still being investigated. Most of the 22 people who have been tested are babies and toddlers.

Before Syria's civil war began in 2011, some 95% of children were vaccinated against the disease.

The UN now estimates 500,000 children have not been immunised.

Half a million children condemned to a life of misery and pain? This is worse than the death toll from the civil war, IMHO. What do you think?

I pray no one is using infectious disease as a weapon over there.

This is just terrible. A horrible disease, it's highly infectious, mainly affects children under five years of age and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. Those little ones have been through hell already without this.

Since the first suspected polio case was reported 10 days ago, Syria's Health Ministry has begun an immunisation drive and aid agencies have begun developing emergency immunisation plans at Syrian refugee camps
Lets hope they have the resources to control this before it gets out of hand.

From my knowledge, which is limited and dated, with Polio, I don't think Polio can be weaponized.

If the EU, Arab League and UN had done their job there would be no civil war and the polio would be quickly contained. As it is? The toll will be high.

Unfortunately, it appears to be already out of hand with an estimated 500,000 children infected. With the lack of hygiene in a war zone, and the tendency for people to huddle together when sheltering from the attacks, this appears to be spreading rapidly and so rapidly that immunizations may not get to enough kids quickly enough to stem the tide before the number of cases reaches the level of negligent genocide.

Immunizing in a coordinated manner where most children are not passed over will be difficult to say the least, in a war zone.

    You read it wrong.

500,000 children not immunized does not mean 500,000 children get polio.

What will be the NEXT reason given for military intervention in Syria?
