Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed dies at 71, literary agent says | Fox News

Lou Reed, the frontman of the rock band the Velvet Underground, has died at age 71 from an ailment related to his recent liver transplant, his literary agent says.

"The first Velvet Underground record sold 30,000 copies in the first five years," Brian Eno, who produced albums by Roxy Music and Talking Heads among others, once said. "I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!"

Was never a big fan, but he did break ground that opened the door for future genres and acts.

Take care, bro. It was one hell of a ride.

The Brian Eno quote is famous and not entirely untrue. That first album was one of the two or three most influential albums of all time. Listen to this and realize it is from 1967:

Both lyrically and musically nothing quite like this had been done. Reveling in feedback to create the musical feel of using heroin, and the lyrics not being for or against, but simple a chronicle of what it like.

But this is my favorite VU song, and I think one of the more beautiful songs ever made:

Really.Really.Sucks.

I saw him on the tour from which Rock and Roll Animal was recorded.

Absolutely great show.

RIP Lou.

Re: Good Bye Lou Reed

I enjoyed his work. I wonder if he was was aware or cared that he probably got a lot of his more gullible fans to do heroin.

Seeing him live (Coney Island Baby tour] made me appreciate that on stage he was an excellent actor, and was not always singing from his own point of view. This song shows another side of him.

Re: Good Bye Lou Reed

R.I.P. I only have one Lou Reed album (1977- Best of). I wasn't a huge fan, but he's a loss for the industry.

Patti Smith reflects on her late friend, Lou Reed

Patti Smith is remembering her friend, inspiration and fellow poet-musician Lou Reed, who died Sunday at age 71.

Smith tells The Associated Press the first time she saw Reed in person was in 1970. She says he and the Velvet Underground were performing at the Manhattan club Max's Kansas City. She says she made it her business to study him.

Interviewed by telephone, Smith says she is pleased by the global impact of Reed's passing and by the stories of how his songs affected people's lives.

Smith cited "Pale Blue Eyes" as a personal favorite. She says the ballad reminded her of her late husband, guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith.

Patti Smith has good taste.
