BBC News - Snowden leaks: France summons US envoy over spying claims

French newspaper LA Monde claims that the US agency the NSA spied on 70.3 million phone calls in France in just 30 days between December 10 last year and January 8, 2013.

The agency also apparently captured millions of text messages.

If this is true then its a disgrace and the US owes France and her people a huge apology. No country has any business spying on allies and disregarding sovereignty like this.

Well the UK is being spied on a larger scale...and that's with the consent of your govt btw.

Indeed. Rome has many eyes.

Every country has every Right to spy as it chooses.

The US has to be competitive. Rampant spying gives USA the competitive edge.

Rampant spying allowed/allows others to catch up.

Looks like revelations like this are the real reason that the Feds were after Snowden.

"Competitive" in what way?

I think all this data mining is counterproductive, tbh. By casting such a wide net, there's such a huge influx of data that it becomes a situation where they are missing the small stuff because there is simply no way in hell they can manage that much coming in. All ethical concerns aside for a moment ... if you're after something, wouldn't it make more sense to selectively target surveillance rather than just troll millions upon millions of phone calls for data that would take people years to analyze? Or do they just have to know what Pierre is shopping for at the local grocer?

We don't need to spy to to catch up with anybody. No short-cut needed.
Did you misunderstand what I said in relation to what you said?
You spoke about the US. I then spoke about others.
Rampant spying allowed/allows others to catch up.

Rampant spying allowed/allows others to catch up.

I did that intentionally.

Years to analyze?

Computers detecting specific words and phrases/words combinations which are then sent on to be examined by humans doesn't appear to take that much time, as it is being done.

Which allows the authorities to then selectively target.

Every country spies on other countries, including their allies, and have been doing this for a very long time. This is all just bluster. France likely has been (or at has been trying to) spy on us and Britain as well. It's fake outrage because one country being "outed" for spying could reveal a that the other countries are doing it too and then those who wanted to believe that this was all movie hype would lose some faith in their government.

With that much data, even with computers chasing specific keywords, it could take who knows how long? Of course, nobody knows what they're looking for.

Oh come on. They are doing it so it likely doesn't take that long.

Of course, nobody knows what they're looking for.
Of course they do. Specific words and phrases. Many which are known to us. Do your own search of them. I am not here to invoke their scrutiny. :)

Selectively target WHAT.

Selectively target WHAT.
Really dude?
You want to play this game?
Those who sent the communications.
You know damn well they are using keywords looking for specific threats.

Every country has every Right to spy as it chooses.

So long as there arent treaties which say they wont. We have many treaties with France, the UN, NATO, that regulate actions between nations.

The NSA supposedly has acres of super computing power. Imagine the speed.

These Snowden leaks have lost their shock value. Not condoning the spying, but still......

And about Mexico, spying on a large, unstable nation that borders us doesn't bother me much.

Don't tell the internet activists that.
