US ambassador summoned by French Foreign Minister over spyign claims.

BBC News - Snowden leaks: France summons US envoy over spying claims

French newspaper LA Monde claims that the US agency the NSA spied on 70.3 million phone calls in France in just 30 days between December 10 last year and January 8, 2013.

The agency also apparently captured millions of text messages.

If this is true then its a disgrace and the US owes France and her people a huge apology. No country has any business spying on allies and disregarding sovereignty like this.

The US has to be competitive. Rampant spying gives USA the competitive edge.

Rampant spying allowed/allows others to catch up.

Looks like revelations like this are the real reason that the Feds were after Snowden.

We don't need to spy to to catch up with anybody. No short-cut needed.

    "Competitive" in what way?

I think all this data mining is counterproductive, tbh. By casting such a wide net, there's such a huge influx of data that it becomes a situation where they are missing the small stuff because there is simply no way in hell they can manage that much coming in. All ethical concerns aside for a moment ... if you're after something, wouldn't it make more sense to selectively target surveillance rather than just troll millions upon millions of phone calls for data that would take people years to analyze? Or do they just have to know what Pierre is shopping for at the local grocer?

Did you misunderstand what I said in relation to what you said?
You spoke about the US. I then spoke about others.
