Just curious, if we are, is there some sort of law against a nation spying on the leaders of another nation? Seems it would be expected, de rigueur.

Seems foolish to do so and I'm not aware of a time in history we didn't do it. Nor am I aware of a time in history where it wasn't done to us. Which treaties precisely?
 
The funniest part of this situation is that people act as if the security agencies in these countries didn't know. If they didn't know, what the **** are they good for? What? CNCIS didn't know about the NSA spying on citizens in its countries? I find that extremely hard to believe.

I think you would be surprised how ill equipped come countries are to not only fight these kind of invasions but also to detect them. I think its pretty reasonable to assume that your ally isn't phone tapping the leader of your country.

I have trouble believing France is ill equipped. I can believe Mexico doesn't have the tech to figure this out - but France?

Dont look at it as spying...just look at it like the NSA is a really nosy but well intentioned neighbor. That set up a spycam in your bedroom.

I have doubts any powerful member of the UN wasn't aware of US spying on certain citizens. Most of these things are done behind doors by ministers of defence and their equivalents. They're not some open secret the public is aware of. Which is why I find France's sudden outrage to be more than well timed. It makes France look bad any way you look a it - what level of power does the US have that we can listen in on anybody's call around the world without being detected after the 70 millionth call? The most likely explanation involves local government who play accomplices for whatever perk we provide them - weapons, tech, waved levies - you name it. No way in hell the French didn't know what was going on.

I think that last is so far from reasonable that it's a foolish leader who sufferred under that impression. I don't believe there's been a time in our world where nations didn't spy upon other nations, allies and enemies alike.

4.All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.

Spying is a violation of another countries soveriegnty as it is a direct breaking of their laws. Recruiting agents, hacking communications, placing electronic surveliance, inserting citizens under false pretenses. Im not saying its not tolerated. Just that its illegal. Then you have cyberwar

Well yesterday Merkel Called Obama.....Today they are have summoned our Ambassador to have a lil Chat with him. So the Germans are not pleased either. The looking in on her Cell phone might have been a bit overboard, don't ya think?
 
BBC News - Snowden leaks: France summons US envoy over spying claims


French newspaper LA Monde claims that the US agency the NSA spied on 70.3 million phone calls in France in just 30 days between December 10 last year and January 8, 2013.

The agency also apparently captured millions of text messages.



If this is true then its a disgrace and the US owes France and her people a huge apology. No country has any business spying on allies and disregarding sovereignty like this.

Everyone is spying on everyone else. You think that England ain't listening in on America? They are, ally or no, there's no trust in politics. The US got caught because we're accumulating faster than others likely.
