Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede[W:236]

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

You tell us. With statistics. :)

How many would you estimate?

My estimate would be 0

This trash is completely dependent upon The Government (taxpayers) to live. It's a National disgrace.

The only politicians they vote for are the ones who give them Food Stamps and Obamaphones

Ah, the internet. Where the hyperpartisan are exposed for the fringe that they are:

Democrats Face Ideological Split Over Wal-Mart | Pew Research Center

About three-quarters of liberal Democrats (74%) said they had shopped at a Wal-Mart in the past year, but just 28% reported shopping there regularly. That compares with 45% of conservative and moderate Democrats and similar percentages in other political groups.

So, out of Democrats/Liberal voters, ~35 shop there regularly and out of Conservatives/Lib. Conservatives ~45% shop there regularly. Showing your "estimates" to be wrong.

Now, for the icing on the cake:

RealClearPolitics - Articles - Revenge of the Wal-Mart Voters

Zogby finds that while 85 percent of frequent Wal-Mart shoppers voted for President Bush's reelection in 2004 (and 88 percent of people who never shop there voted for Sen. John Kerry), Wal-Mart voters have turned on the president dramatically. In a poll taken earlier this month, they gave Bush a 35 percent approval rating -- compared to a 45 percent positive rating from born-again Christians, 49 percent from NASCAR fans, and 54 percent from self-identified conservatives.

... So... 85% of a constituency (Wal-Mart shoppers) voted Republican JUST 8 years ago. What percentage do you think are still Republicans today? ;)

I didn't ask you how many people shop at Wal-Mart. You're trying to setup a false premise and your math sucks. Par for the course.

Not everyone that shops at Wal-Mart pays for their purchase with an EBT card

Did you watch the video? How many non Obama voters do you think knowingly filled up their shopping carts and went on spending sprees at taxpayer expense?

My estimate is 0

What's yours

Correct, you asked how many of those shoppers vote Republican. I showed you a link which showed you that 85% of Wal-Mart shoppers are Republican voters. Here are the numbers again:

Focus like a laser beam - this part is tricky:

12 million on welfare.
996K in Louisiana.
50%+ are GOP

Now, 85% of regular Wal-Mart shoppers being Republican vs 996K in Louisiana being on welfare. Anyway you slice it, that's a little over half of the people that showed up at that mall with EBT cards being possible Republicans.

Proving that your estimate for '0' is statistically impossible. Even if only 200 people showed up, at a MINIMUM that would leave a possibility of 50 EBT shoppers being card carrying Republicans. You think this is a game?

Now let's just say that we go ONLY by the statistics of welfare recipients. Granted, 60% of welfare recipients are Democrat. However, that means that out of 100 shoppers in that store 40 are possible EBT carrying Republicans. Seriously, your assertion that 0% of the people in that store using EBT cards are Republicans is just not possible due to the basic laws of probability.

How long did it take you to google all that? This is hilarious.

You're not grasping it. Did you watch the video? Here is the video:

My comment has to do with the people in the video. Not everyone that shops at Wal-Mart. You're just not very bright. I'm sorry, not trying to be mean, but you're trying too hard and wasting all your time with some fail math.

Here, let me help you a bit. Focus like a laser beam. Stay with me now.

This incident happened in 2 cities located in one state. So if you're going to go through all this trouble you might want to focus on the demographics of the 2 cities in question

Just sayin

Anyways have a nice night :2wave:

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

Actually, it can't. The only entity that can pay taxes are people. Nothing else has the capability to pull it off. Once you start treating something as a person you shouldn't be surprised that are in turn seen as one.

Can a corporation be executed for murder like a person can?

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

There is a reality that the republicans are correct on. If you give people something then many will take it even if they do not deserve it. I totally agree with that reality and even though a few people might not take the extra, if you leave a hole people will. It is not just the poor which reps need to recognize. It works that way for the rich also. If we hand them money with no strings attached and no regulations they will take that money and do the wrong thing with it. This is why I have absolutely no problems with regulations on things like welfare and on things like corporations. You do not leave it up to the honor system, and you do not expect people will do the right thing. It is a mistake.

What happened here is bad, but i do not blame the poor. Yes, they should have stayed at home, and if you can catch them I am all for punishing them for stealing. We have to look at the system that screwed up and fix that system. That means a few things need to happen. First we cannot have the poison pill of a shoestring budget operating the administration of our welfare system. If we want the right people to get the assistance and to have motivation for them to get off the system we need to pay for administration and evaluation, and we also need to recognize that money needs to be properly spent and that if we just throw money at it with no direction we will only get more abuse.

I am for more low end employees who approve and audit the welfare system. I am not for high paid administrators who will take their paychecks and give nothing back. I think that the grunts in the system need to have more help sop that they can actually do the job instead of having so much work they just have to let abuses go. This will require more government employees and these employees should be paid a living wage for their services and we should hire from the welfare ranks. We should say here is a 28-30 k job opening who will be given to local welfare recipients and they will come off of welfare. Their job will be a clerk at the office who processes applications, audits them, answers questions, and does general clerk stuff./ Those that do good would advance to an adminstrative position where they work on more investigations of the methods and applicants that are used, and managing the people below them. This will take more funding, but in the end we will root out abuses of the system, and we will pull people into employment and out of the system and put them into working society which consumes and drives the economy. Yes, we will have to have some oversite people who's sole purpose is to investigate for fraud and corruption.

Another thing we need to do is to start employing new technology more and limiting cash outputs. No more cash benefits. We limit food benefits and other benefits to the exact items we want to give people. No more doritos or lobster with food stamps. No more being able to gamble with cash you got from TANF. You can purchase certain non brand name foods with food stamps. We will limit you from buying junk food or soda. When you get TANF you will have some discretionary spending on food and clothing, but you will be limited in where you can purchase them and how many you can purchase. You will not be able to use it in macy's or sachs. We will allow you to use TANF in thrift stores, Walmarts like stores, and low end places like a kohls or other store on non-brand name items that you can use. You can buy cleaning supplies, and you can buy things like paper and pencils or school and office supplies. You can get 4 pairs of shoes. Sneakers, dress shoes, work shoes, and an extra pair. None of those will be worth over 50 dollars. We will not approve brand name air jordans for purchase with the funds. We can go along and set these limitations and with modern POS systems we can regulate purchases. There may still be some abuse, but we will make it as hard as possible to do it, and when we catch people who assist with abuses we will charge them with a crime and punish them.

In order to make this work we will need to invest in a better infrastructure for our federal government systems and make sure it is up and running as much as possible. That means we need to have people paid for to be on top of it 24 hours a day and those people should be employed by the US government and not some contracting firm getting kickbacks. Tghis is a permanent system which needs experience trained people to operate it and that comes from administering the employees directly. Yes, that means we will have to make the systems better and upgrade them when we get better technology to keep them efficiently fighting abuses.

I am even for saying the government should test welfare recipients for recreational drugs even if they are legal. Because that would be something permanent the government should have facilities available that we maintain to do those tests. We should not be giving that contract to to the govornor's cousing jethro who happens to run a shady drug testing scam and wants public money funneling in. We can employ the people and we can have them ready to do the testing as we need it because we are always going to have poor people applying and using these systems.

We need to start cracking down on corruption and kickbacks. We will save money on spending if we make the system streamlined and well administered. This is not something for friends of the electorate to get cushy high paying jobs where they get paid over 100k a year to shake hands and kiss ass. We should pay administrators good, but not overpay them. We should make sure administration at the high levels is not redundant. We should seek competition for any private contracts that we have to have. We should have people who's only job is to come in and root out inefficiency and abuse and who work in a transparent way with the people of this country and who respect and protect whistleblowers. These people should be hated by those who they overlook. Their job is to investigate and stick their noses into everything to find abuse. They should be professional and respectful, but there should be no question they are always watching and they are not going to overlook something because of friendship or affiliation.

When we get serious about doing this and stop cutting our own hamstrings while trying to stop abuses we will find we are much better off with these programs. Yes, I do see why people hate these programs, but these programs do come from a good place and can be done well. We can use our excess money that we piss away on overpriced contracts and do nothing administrators to offset the costs of doing it right. Knowing how much corruption is there we might even find we save money when we do more if we stop wasting. It is time to stop blaming the recipients and the programs when we leave the doors open for people to abuse the system. of course it gets abused, and yes it needs to change, but we do not need to get rid of the system, just start doing the right thing and addressing the problems with intelligence and work rather than throwing money at the hole.

Oh, and yes i know, it was TL;DR for some illiterate dumbasses. Sorry, but the problems and solutions here are not covered in a twitter size post of some catch phrase, and no I am not really sorry so suck it up and scroll on by if you are incapable of reading more than a paragraph.

Most of people that shop at Walmart probably don't have inherited wealth or college educations, had kids in their teens and the kind of jobs they used to have in manufacturing got sent overseas.

The poor are easy to pick on because they don't have the political clout or funding to defend themselves. So naturally, everything wrong in this country is their fault.

This is hilarious. You're frantically googling walmart polls and other obscure nonsense while completely dodging the context and subject of this thread.

This thread is not about who shops at Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart just happens to be where this specific EBT glitch took place. That could have happened anywhere. It says it right there in the news report. "Word spread and people flocked to Wal-Mart". The people in the video went there because word on spread about the glitch on the street.

You lack even the most basic critical thinking skills. It's pathetic. I'm serious. It's PATHETIC. The problem is the EBT system itself. Clearly it's broken. Clearly the Government can manipulate the public with it. This was just a test run. Clearly these people are only concerned about their self interests.

The culture surrounding our welfare system encourages vultures to play the system. You should be asking yourself what you're going to do when the EBT cards permanently shut off and these people need to eat. You're totally derailing this thread with childish nonsense and pathetic attempts at mockery. It's beneath me to even reply to you. Consider this the last time. Ever.

Walmart shelves in Springhill, Mansfield, cleared in EBT glitch

Walmart shelves in Springhill, Mansfield, cleared in EBT glitch - KSLA News 12 Shreveport, Louisiana News Weather & Sports

MANSFIELD, LA (KSLA) -
Shelves in Walmart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, LA were reportedly cleared Saturday night, when the stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though they were not showing limits.

The chaos that followed ultimately required intervention from local police, and left behind numerous carts filled to overflowing, apparently abandoned when the glitch-spurred shopping frenzy ended.

Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Walmart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Walmart was so packed, "It was worse than any black Friday" that he's ever seen.

Lynd explained the cards weren't showing limits and they called corporate Walmart, whose spokesman said to let the people use the cards anyway. From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $700.00 and only had .49 on her card. She was held by police until corporate Walmart said they wouldn't press charges if she left the food.

Lynd says at 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts full of food in the aisles and left.

What is wrong with these people? It's like a frenzy of dishonesty. I think it's quite obvious that these people who use the EBT cards were trying to steal food. Guaranteed the Walmart store will NEVER do that again.

Re: Walmart shelves in Springhill, Mansfield, cleared in EBT glitch

That whole situation could have been handled better by Walmart in my opinion.

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

I skimmed through the first 10-ish pages and noticed something weird.

No one is talking about what they stole.

Food.

Yes, that's all they could steal. But there's really only one possible motivation for stealing food: not having enough, or not being sure you will in the near future.

There's no status attached to having a truck ton of food, like there is an iPhone. There's no "fun" involved with having a truck ton of food, like there is doing some retail therapy. And beyond that, most food goes bad. You can really only accumulate so much food that you don't intend to eat within the near future.

There's only one motivation for stealing food. Hunger, and legitimate fear of hunger.

If these people had enough food, they wouldn't steal food. There's no reason to.

This is a place where 60% of the population lives in poverty, including half of children. Children, keep in mind, are expensive, but cannot work in most cases.

South Mansfield, Louisiana (LA) poverty rate data - information about poor and low income residents living in this city

Don't be fooled into thinking getting food stamps means they will have enough food. I've seen people on food stamps who obviously do not have anywhere near enough food. Weirdly, this is why they sometimes put on weight. They don't have enough to buy sufficient quantities of quality food, so they buy crap in bulk instead so they can feel full, even though they are nutritionally malnourished.

Furthermore, this is a state as a whole that has shown before that it has had quite a break-down of social cohesion. It's ever man, woman, and child for themselves down there.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised this instantly devolved into a Red Team versus Blue Team assignment of blame, but can we just look at what happened here?

This is way more complicated than debating the moral goodness or evil of the great unwashed, or the minutia of what some doltish bureaucrat did.

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

Is this seriously now a debate about WHO WAL-MART SHOPPERS VOTE FOR/SUPPORT??!?!?

/facepalm

Re: Walmart shelves in Springhill, Mansfield, cleared in EBT glitch

They could have set a store limit, which would have made sense. But you see the character of people who find out there's a glitch in their favor, turn into rabid thieves.

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

I guess they could just say no and let people starve to death. That's not terribly P.C., now is it?

Hyperbole much? They could have imposed a $300 limit per card. Starve to DEATH....

You keep trying to argue the general to the specific and then fault others for their statistics. A national average, or even a Louisiana statewide statistic doesn't help to answer what happened in that one Walmart.

Some might even argue that the fact that 50+% of welfare recipients in Louisiana vote Republican is why the looting wasn't more wide spread.
