Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede[W:236]

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

That's one of the problems with OPM (other peoples money)
It is very addictive, and people just keep wanting more.

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

Be like Christmas in October. Hahahahahahaha
But if there is a god, anyone that went over their usual limit will have that taken out of their next months payout.

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

WalMart is as guilty as the people.
"Lynd explained the cards weren't showing limits and they called corporate Wal-Mart, whose spokesman said to let the people use the cards anyway."
Haven't you learned yet, it's never a corporation's fault, it's ALWAYS either the government or the little people or both. Never our corporate overlords. Facism, Communism, Socialism, all wrong in their attempts to tag Obama, or Democrats, or Republicans,.. what we have here and pretty much globally is an oligarchy.

I guess they could just say no and let people starve to death. That's not terribly P.C., now is it?

Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede- MSN Money

People abusing a system they new had limits the people who were practically stealing . Shame on you .

What...you've got a whole bunch of people who are used to getting free stuff and then something happens where they have an opportunity to get MORE free stuff and people are surprised when they take advantage of the deal? What do you figure "entitlement" means?

Really? What else was the store supposed to do? They had two options:
1. Nobody gets to use an EBT until things are fixed or;
2. You just take people's word for what's available.

WalMart is going to end up taking the hit on this because they will only be reimbursed whatever the cardholder's limit was.

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

According to the new liberal economic paradigm, this little mishap is a good thing. The poor going on spending sprees helps them out, boosts demand, the demand causes companies to hire more people, those people then spend more money, and then those businesses earn and invest and hire more, the economy grows, we reach full employment, and our debt problems are resolved.

I was going to reply but I then figured it was supposed to be sarcastic. Atleast I hope it was.

Walmart is a terrible place. It's the only place that these things happen. How many stores have an annual trampling death rate?

For the record, #1 would have been the right thing to do.

Not necessarily. However I do have to say that my schadenfreude is all lit up and glittering just knowing that WalMart is going to get screwed on those balances. If it's REAL bad, then it indicates that associates (employees) as well as customers must have spread the word pretty quickly. More power to 'em, I say, WalMart deserves to be screwed by both.

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

Honestly, although the people are not blameless here, Walmart is much more responsible after they realized there was no limit and still allowed it to happen. The government should hold WalMart responsible for any overcharges.

The businesses around here put up signs to apologize and say that they simply couldn't accept EBT due to a system problem and that is what WalMart should have done, unless they are willing to cover the additional costs.

Actually I've read somewhere that there are emergency steps for such things according to EBT, which is that each customer gets a $50 emergency voucher against the card till the system is back up. The voucher has their EBT number and pin and is then entered by accounting when the system is up. No one goes hungry and no entity can be too terribly screwed by over-purchasing.

Joe's corner market can get away with stuff like that but when Walmart does it they end up being on the front page of the paper as "Biggest Assholes Ever". For them it's better to take a $20-30k hit on the EBT's instead of the negative publicity.

Gotta love the selective hatred. Millions of shoppers mindlessly deal-seeking for the most bargain-basement prices, government subsidizing them to do so, and but it's the company--that responds to what those consumers want (low prices) and takes advantage of government's enabling--that deserves all our wrath.

Failing to recognize the historical effect Walmart has had on people needing welfare and subsidies is a reflection on you, not me.

What was Wal-Mart supposed to do? Cut them off? There would have been a riot!

Those people stole YOUR money. They're totally to blame.

Exactly. See below for additional examples.

(To the bolded) Exactly. It was only for two hours (yes, I know they didn't know that at the beginning), but even if it had lasted longer no one was going to starve.

And why did the store manager have to call corporate? In any business, other than a two-bit operation, the store manager should have had the authority and competency to make the decision to temporarily suspend the use of the cards.

This doesn't excuse the people who abused the situation, they knew that what they were doing was wrong.

Yes. Its WalMarts fault for allowing poor people to buy food for their family and THATS what caused everyone to spread the word and make a run on Walmart stealing shopping carts full of food they knew they couldnt afford.
