I think both you guys are barking up the wrong tree. Most those people involved in that incident probably never even thought of voting before, let alone have some form of developed political ideology.

Remember, voter turnout hovers around 55%

Focus like a laser beam - this part is tricky:

    12 million on welfare.
    996K in Louisiana.
    50%+ are GOP

Now, 85% of regular Wal-Mart shoppers being Republican vs 996K in Louisiana being on welfare. Anyway you slice it, that's a little over half of the people that showed up at that mall with EBT cards being possible Republicans.

Proving that your estimate for '0' is statistically impossible. Even if only 200 people showed up, at a MINIMUM that would leave a possibility of 50 EBT shoppers being card carrying Republicans. You think this is a game?

Now let's just say that we go ONLY by the statistics of welfare recipients. Granted, 60% of welfare recipients are Democrat. However, that means that out of 100 shoppers in that store 40 are possible EBT carrying Republicans. Seriously, your assertion that 0% of the people in that store using EBT cards are Republicans is just not possible due to the basic laws of probability.
you're being a bit disingenuous here: We are not simply talking about walmart shoppers. We are talking about walmart shoppers who collect benefits in a majority african american town

Walmart shelves in Springhill, Mansfield, cleared in EBT glitch

Walmart shelves in Springhill, Mansfield, cleared in EBT glitch - KSLA News 12 Shreveport, Louisiana News Weather & Sports

    MANSFIELD, LA (KSLA) -
Shelves in Walmart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, LA were reportedly cleared Saturday night, when the stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though they were not showing limits.

The chaos that followed ultimately required intervention from local police, and left behind numerous carts filled to overflowing, apparently abandoned when the glitch-spurred shopping frenzy ended.

Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Walmart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Walmart was so packed, "It was worse than any black Friday" that he's ever seen.

Lynd explained the cards weren't showing limits and they called corporate Walmart, whose spokesman said to let the people use the cards anyway. From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $700.00 and only had .49 on her card. She was held by police until corporate Walmart said they wouldn't press charges if she left the food.

Lynd says at 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts full of food in the aisles and left.
What is wrong with these people? It's like a frenzy of dishonesty. I think it's quite obvious that these people who use the EBT cards were trying to steal food. Guaranteed the Walmart store will NEVER do that again.

That whole situation could have been handled better by Walmart in my opinion.

Re: Food stamp glitch leads to Wal-Mart stampede

I skimmed through the first 10-ish pages and noticed something weird.

No one is talking about what they stole.

    Food.

Yes, that's all they could steal. But there's really only one possible motivation for stealing food: not having enough, or not being sure you will in the near future.

There's no status attached to having a truck ton of food, like there is an iPhone. There's no "fun" involved with having a truck ton of food, like there is doing some retail therapy. And beyond that, most food goes bad. You can really only accumulate so much food that you don't intend to eat within the near future.

There's only one motivation for stealing food. Hunger, and legitimate fear of hunger.

If these people had enough food, they wouldn't steal food. There's no reason to.

This is a place where 60% of the population lives in poverty, including half of children. Children, keep in mind, are expensive, but cannot work in most cases.

South Mansfield, Louisiana (LA) poverty rate data - information about poor and low income residents living in this city

Don't be fooled into thinking getting food stamps means they will have enough food. I've seen people on food stamps who obviously do not have anywhere near enough food. Weirdly, this is why they sometimes put on weight. They don't have enough to buy sufficient quantities of quality food, so they buy crap in bulk instead so they can feel full, even though they are nutritionally malnourished.

Furthermore, this is a state as a whole that has shown before that it has had quite a break-down of social cohesion. It's ever man, woman, and child for themselves down there.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised this instantly devolved into a Red Team versus Blue Team assignment of blame, but can we just look at what happened here?

This is way more complicated than debating the moral goodness or evil of the great unwashed, or the minutia of what some doltish bureaucrat did.

They could have set a store limit, which would have made sense. But you see the character of people who find out there's a glitch in their favor, turn into rabid thieves.

Hyperbole much? They could have imposed a $300 limit per card. Starve to DEATH....

another thread in which the far right gets to scream rant bitch moan and generally demonize the poor .

So very very predictable. How long will it take for the issue of race to rear its ugly head?
