Al-Qaida Surges Back in Iraq, Reviving Old Fears

BAGHDAD October 13, 2013(AP)

By ADAM SCHRECK Associated Press

First came the fireball, then the screams of the victims. The suicide bombing just outside a Baghdadgraveyard knocked Nasser Waleed Ali over and peppered his back with shrapnel.

Al-Qaida has come roaringback in Iraq since U.S. troops left in late 2011 and now looks stronger than ithas in years. The terror group has shown it is capable of carrying outmass-casualty attacks several times a month, driving the death toll in Iraq to thehighest level in half a decade. It sees each attack as a way to cultivate anatmosphere of chaos that weakens the Shiite-led government's authority.

Iraqi officials acknowledgethe group is growing stronger.

No Al Qaida was heard in Iraq of Saddam's regime. Who brought them in?

Saddam wouldn't have tolerated 'em. I guess they're not afraid of the new regime.

Saddam not only tolerated AQ in Iraq, he was allies with them in their war against the PUK in Iraq.

Our sacrifice of blood and treasure in Iraq is starting to pay dividends...... for Al Qaeda.

They never left. The idea that AQ was never there was just part of the anti American propaganda, propagated mostly by the US MSM.

Can any one actually document with a reputable source their claims about AQ in Iraq prior to the war? I see unsubstantiated claims both ways...

Not likely. It's a lot easier just to make history up after the fact.

That would be kinda sad. I have no clue as to the truth, and would be swayed by credible sourcing.

It is basic logic. Saddam was everything Al Q was/is fighting against in the Middle East.

Actually there were meetings between the Saddam regime and AQ and were reported in the European media. Al Q was there right away and were murdering Iraqis as well as Americans and their Allies. But what's happening now was pretty much inevitable when the pullout began. The same will happen in Afghanistan. Good people are dying there for nothing.

It's all too late now. People have forgotten the first casualty of war.

Nice dodge. I can safely put you in the has no credible source column.

Sure, go ahead. This is all too sad to debate now anyway. So many good people lost for nothing, and those lives are still being lost.

This is what I found-
The World Nutt Dully in 1999 ran an article where they cite unnamed, unsubstantiated, never documented articles from other news sources. The 'reports' were never confirmed after the invasion....

or were they...

Brit Hume did a Faux Noise special report interviewing Stephen Hayes of the Weekly Standard on July 8, 2005.

Hayes insists there is a former Saddam henchman in Gitmo who has reported a contact in the Sudan in 1998. (The Guardian Newspaper reports the contact as in the mountains near Kandahar in 1998 but what the hey?)

Hayes also insists payment of $300,000 to al-Qaida's number 2, Zawahiri in person in Baghdad in 1998. Busy year this 1998! ( $300,000 was chump change to a pre-9-11 bin-Laden, highly unlikely bin-Laden would accept so little money from someone he thought was a black mark on Islam.)

Hayes claims the Butler report backs his claims up. Ahhhh no it doesn't. I can find no mention of any inquiry into a possible Iraq-AQ linkage. As best as I can tell the WMD/yellow cake/uranium reports and their tenuous claims to the truth was the focus of the Butler Report.

Then there was the Iraqi defector who claims to have been in the WMD project. (he actually was on the lamm for stealing from a television station he worked at before running) Code named Curveball he told many fanciful tales. To the extent that most European intel agencies concluded he was full of Cheney. BushII's team whoever swore he was the touch stone to a look inside the extensive WMD program Saddam was running.

Since then NO credible evidence has ever surfaced to support Hayes's claims. ALL investigations have been very dismissive of any Iraq-AQ connection. The radical right can cling to whatever very dated 'reports' are on the interwebs, but subsequent studies, reports and investigations have shown the IR/AQ connections was mostly in the minds of a few who needed there to be one... :peace

Bush's vanity wars: the gift that just keep on giving.

It is basic logic. Saddam was everything Al Q was/is fighting against in the Middle East.

Right, 'coz setting aside differences against a common enemy never happens.

"Basic logic."

You can support almost anything by quoting the right blog. Here's a quote by the CIC who carried out the invasion:

BUSH: One of the major theaters against al Qaeda turns out to have been Iraq. This is where al Qaeda said they were going to take their stand. This is where al Qaeda was hoping to take–
RADDATZ: But not until after the U.S. invaded.
BUSH: Yeah, that’s right. So what? The point is that al Qaeda said they’re going to take a stand. Well, first of all in the post-9/11 environment Saddam Hussein posed a threat. And then upon removal, al Qaeda decides to take a stand.

They never left. The idea that AQ was never there was just part of the anti American propaganda, propagated mostly by the US MSM.
They arrived in 2003....

So basically my hope of a credible source is not going to happen...
