Looks like Obama is backing down on keeping national parks closed, it must not have been polling well. Good for Utah, I hope every other state gets on board.

"Ten days after a federal government deadlock shut down Utah’s national parks, bleeding tourism-dependent businesses and towns, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert inked a deal late Thursday and wired funds Friday morning to the Interior Department that should have park gates swinging open by Saturday morning."

Looks like he duped the people of Utah into paying the federal govt to gain access to their own land.

Unfortunately it is fed land but Utah should take it over I agree.

The special interests and greedy state politicians would destroy Utah's wild lands. No thanks.

The state of Utah made a deal to open the National Parks with state funding as did Wyoming, Colorado and Arizonia.

Says who? Did Utah give the federal govt Glen Canyon, or did they take it? Under what authority do they get to take state lands and nationalize them?

It's ridiculous that the states must await permission from the fed to maintain public land in their own state. I'd much rather public parks be funded by state governments than the federal government.

considering that some states take more federal money in than they pay back in federal taxes, without the federal governments charity some states would break down entirely. Utah is one of those states

Well, the states don't exactly set the federal tax laws, do they? Maybe if we instituted a tax system that didn't so heavily focus on high income brackets we would see a more even distribution of tax contribution from states whose inflation isn't so ridiculous.

Thankfully Teddy Roosevelt disagreed..

You probably don't like that BLM land grab either..
To be honest, neither do I..
Many of you call them 'poachers' and I don't blame you..
I've seen their garbage messes right next to national forest campgrounds, sure to attract Bear..
Pack out what you pack in and then some.

Utah state parks are at least as well run as fed parks and they are not used as political pawns by power hungry presidents.

Impressive list..Spent a lot of summers in Steinaker and Red Fleet when my millwright buddies were wildcattin out of Vernal in the 70's..
Floats just below the Flaming Gorge dam were awesome..Brings back great memories..Utah's resources are special.

to some extent I can agree.
However, most States could not afford the wildfire suppression costs. State taxes would go sky high or Feds would have to pick up the tab.

If it wasn't for Lincoln commissioning the early park sojourns, which TR was a part of, along with TR's legendary legacy in saving these Natl Parks..Utah is an incredible Mother Nature paradise, brought to you by the Eisenhower Interstates..Mormons do as great a job as the Israelis in making the desert come to life..Did you think there wouldn't be repercussions with this false equivalency of Repubs?

Good Sawyer. Now can you name the FIVE NATIONAL PARKS in Utah that tourists from all over the world come to see?

Why wouldn't we assume that the Feds will always pick up the tab??
Next time their is a "Blue" disaster, like Sandy, I want Repubs to come out right away in public and scold/trash/detail Dems for their charge of Pork..
Peter King type Repubs are still hot over Sandy..
Colorado flood relief should have gotten there right away.

I liked your OP but the first Paragraph is like saying Obama threw a snowstorm at western SD..
I liked it because Utah is such a special state and thanks for bringing it up..
I've lost count over the decades of how many times I've driven that Escalante ridge..
A hair-raiser was going east from Boulder..1st gear all the way down.

I haven't done much research on the issue but I find it hard to believe states couldn't find some way to raise revenue for it.

Even if the federal government MUST maintain wildfire suppression infrastructure, that doesn't mean they have to actually own and manage all aspects of the land.

States provide fire protection for lands they manage.
Feds do for lands they manage.
Cooperative agreements exist. Cost agreements are generally set so State pays for use of Federal resources. Feds pay for use of State/local resources. Fires involving multiple land ownership, cost sharing is generally broken down by percent ownership of the fire boundaries.
Yes, States can apply for federal disaster aid.

My point, as it exists today if the States took over the management of federal lands, the State would assume the protection costs.

Here's a broadcast of what they did to foreign tourists. It's a disgrace to the American people.

I don't think Utah takes more than it's share in Federal money, nor would it break down. The LDS are too organized to let that happen.

Btw, over 3/4 of Utah is Federal BLM land. In fact, most of the west is Federal BLM land.

BLM stands for Bureau of Land Managment.

The states can manage that land just as well and probably better as locals will have more of a stake in managing it.

The states would tear down paradise and put up a parking lot.
