I believe Congress has already resolved this issue. It wasn't politically driven. Compensation of various natures is simply not authorized right now.

Right, putting out a press release saying you can't pay for funerals isn't politically driven. I throw the BS flag.

“Secretary [of Defense Chuck] Hagel assured the service leaders that he would work closely with them to address these challenges, and support the service members and families impacted by these disruptions,” it continued....."

The conservative Washington Times seems to be trying real hard to make it political.

So where's the "press release"? Do you have a link the actual press release or should we just assume the WT is politicizing the families of fallen soldiers?

Pathetic response, but here you go. Same article essentially from the NYTimes http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/09/u...eath-benefits-for-military-families.html?_r=0

I was just responding to your pathetic post. Neither of the links that you provided were press releases. This is what DOD press releases look like....and there's not one that talks or mentions anything about not paying the benefits of the fallen soldiers to their families.

Defense.gov News: News Releases

Your NYT link says that the military didn't have a choice because of a law that was passed by congress....

"....Under the shutdown, Carl Woog, a Defense Department spokesman, said on Tuesday, “the Department of Defense does not currently have the authority to pay death gratuities and other key benefits for the survivors of service members killed in action.” ....<snip>....

The House Appropriations Committee is moving to get a bill to the floor to reinstate the benefits as early as Wednesday....<snip>....

“The fact that the House is developing new legislation on this matter shows Congress fully understands that D.O.D. does not have the legal authority to provide these death benefits,” a senior military official said. “Secretary Hagel is outraged and disgusted by this situation, but the law is clear.” ....read......"

I don't quite understand what your version of a press release is, but it's usually when information is released to the press. WTF are you talking about?

You really don't think this is political? You really think the military doesn't have the money to pay for funerals? You really must be joking or you have bought into the BS hook line and sinker.

Shutdown outrage: Military death benefits denied to families of fallen troops - Washington Times

This is utterly shameful.

"The Pentagon revealed the elimination of funeral pay, along with other impacts of the shutdown, in a press release."

We have plenty of money and to do this is the lowest form of cowardice and political BS that I have ever heard of. Shame on whoever came up with this politically driven idea and I hope they have their balls nailed to the wall.

Here is the problem with your politicizing. I agree the government spends too much and the continual borrowing of money will eventually lead to a point where we are so in debt we can no longer handle it and there will be a huge collapse in the US economy and lifestyle due to what happens when the bills come due. The reality is that we are very much in debt now and that cutting that debt means lowering the expenditures we make. That means cuts in everything. You want cuts to things you do not like, but when it comes to these frivelious things you want it not to be cut and for us to keep on bleeding money. You also seem to expect that your things are not going to be the most cut when you have lost the presidency and the senate. Sorry, but the real;ity should be that the dems lead the way in cutting things. Now if you are going to hold the purse strings and deny any credit and shut down unneccesary parts of the government then you will loose things like this. This is not necessary to the survival of the american people. This thing you are bitching about is a perk, and I agree that it is time to start cutting all perks. If you wish to ask why perks like congressional benefits, presidential benefits, corporate tax deductions, military spending, foreign aid, foreign country building, and corporate welfare are not being cut with everything else I am right there with you. However, since your point seems to be let us keep spending on this crap while we have a money problem because you think that BS spending for your toys should remain in effect I cannot support your point at all.

Cuts means cutting for all of us. You wanted fiscal responsibility now suck it up and deal. This is what it means and you bneed to stop whining about losing things like this and public park funding, along with many other frivelous things. Yes, that means stupid old vets might not have a memorial, dumb ass republican sycophants might not get white house tours, and we might not be able to bomb as many people in the future.

What the hell are you talking about? We are talking about funeral pay for men and women killed in the line of duty overseas. The military is funded through the Pay our Military Act of Sep 2013.

"Over the weekend, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the Pentagon concluded that most of its 400,000 civilian employees were covered by the bill." - NY Times

They made this choice.

Your response is cold hearted, un-American, and really shows your immaturity.

If there is really no money to give soldiers then why did they fly the bodies back to the states? According to your logic, they're dead so the military responsibility to them has ceased.

I really didn't foresee the lunatics coming out of the wood work on this one. I'm sad that you call yourself an American.

Don't bother responding, I don't care what you have to say and you're "ignored."

Not necessary for survival and it is a perk. Your views are irresponsible and do not take into account you simply do not have the money and it is by the design of republicans that we face this now instead of doing rational cuts. Your complaining sounds much like a teenager being told they can no longer have their Iphone because they overspent and the family budget simply does not cover that perk any more. you are arguing over an entitlement and you feel like you deserve it even at the expense of the survival of this nation,. and that is why your complaining is falling on deaf ears. You want everyone else to sacrifice while you get your entitlements.

My version of a 'press release' is the same as the dictionary and the press....

Press Release - An announcement of an event, performance, or other newsworthy item that is issued to the press.

I didn't say the military didn't have the money...I said they weren't lawfully authorized by congress to pay the benefits. Didn't you read your link?

After congress recently passed a law that 'didn't' inclued death benefits...

Text of H.R. 3210: Pay Our Military Act (Passed Congress/Enrolled Bill version) - GovTrack.us

....it is possible the military told the press that they couldn't pay the death benefits to embarrass congress into passing legislation so the families could get the benefits in a timely manner. Otherwise, congress probably wouldn't do anything.

Yes, things that are not cut by the republicans denyiong a vote on the budget are not going to be cut. We do not have to shut down golf courses because the government shuts down. In the end we do not even need to shut down the military and it's operations. Meanwhile you are complaining about frivelouse benefits while pregnant mothers are being starved because of things like WIC being shut down. The dead are not going anywhere, but you seem perfectly fine with starving people. If I were to rate evil that might be one of the things i would put on that list.

The Pentagon has always had problems with burials. When my brother in law passed away, it took me 2 months to bury him at the VA Cemetery here in Houston, due to a snafu.

Is the golf course you're talking about a private course?

You do know that Congress controls the money right?

And this Congress has offered 4 times to fund the Government but if Barry agreed he would'nt be able to do stupid selfish **** like close down the " Amber Alert" website for a day, and close down self funded parks and memorials.

He hs to demagogue the issue, make it hurt and the problem with his strategy is that only really simpleminded people ( Obama voters) actually blame the shutdown on the GOP.

Barry is preaching to tthe choir.

Soldiers pay for these death benefits, so there's no cut that is justified, here.

I can't find any information about this aside from the same article reposted countless times.

Isn't this what happens when you shut down your government? So why are you all surprised by this?

That answered neither of my questions I ask another poster, but thanks for playing. Be sure to pick up your prize on the way out.

Yet they can pay capital police to pick up trash after illegal aliens, but Obama doesn't have the money to pay military families?

Finally Obama has accomplished something. Being a ruthless 3rd world dictator.

When someone believes Obama is literally a comic book villain, there's no sense talking to them.

I agree. The comic book villains usually have at least one redeeming feature.

That's precisely what he is - and always has been. Ruthless, vindictive, the very personification of mean-spirited.

One tidbit of logic [to their pea-sized hearts] as to why they can't pay for the funerals is because they've also disallowed access to the cemeteries. Ergo, if the families can't get to the cemeteries, why pay for the funerals? But then, that's how the "party of compassion" thinks.
