Shutdown outrage: Military death benefits denied to families of fallen troops

I did not mention SGLI.

This was a death gratuity, same as now. Nor did I say it was on our leave and earning statements. In fact the class I attended made the point that we would not see it on our LES (which is why it was not obvious).

If it isn't on your LES, it isn't part of your earnings and it most likely would not be part of that budget planning.

So you don't think there should be ANY assistance programs for people?
Not from the federal government. There were not provisions made to take money from one person to give to another person.

States and lower political entities may address those issues if they choose to.

I am confused. How can one be a socialist and be slightly conservative?
They're called CINOs (pronounced "cheenos"). Their's is a worldview acquired primarily in the more pretentious coffee shops - usually on the left coast.

Why do you find that hard to believe? It isn't something people think about really. Both sides are being petty. They knew they had to ensure that the military was paid, but there are plenty of things that go beyond just our monthly pay and direct monthly benefits. They didn't think about those other things, only the immediate, basic pay and allowances.

We have a Congress who is too busy fighting and being petty to notice the extra things.

I find it extremely hard to believe that they didn't realize or think about the immediate death gratuity/benefit. When you look at the shear numbers of military deaths since the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan http://www.defense.gov/news/casualty.pdf (these numbers of course, not completely solid, but the point is made) We're talking about billions of dollars.....billions....with a "B" that are in play here. How this amount of money has not batted any politician's eyelashes over the years is beyond me. I really do think someone seriously dropped the ball on this one. I'm not taking sides on this gov shutdown. Everyone on the Hill are to blame from Obama, to the Republicans AND the Democrats, and they are all acting like children. But lets not pretend that billions of dollars was simply forgotten about and not taken into account for having an effect on the emergency bill that was passed to ensure military pay continued.
