Journalists Detail Major Chilling Effect, Denounce White House War On Leaks In New Re

Re: Journalists Detail Major Chilling Effect, Denounce White House War On Leaks In Ne

I think it's funny when journalists complain about not being able to do their job, and then criticize someone else who is doing their job. I also find it strange they are upset when it's hard for them to find people who are willing to break the law and deal with the consequences of breaking the law.

To be clear, I'm not saying all the activities the United States engage in are right or morally acceptable. What I am saying is I do not feel sorry for journalists who are not finding people willing to break the law.

They're not breaking any laws. They're worried about having their communications monitored or tapped, veiled threats from the White House, etc.

I guess investigative reporting has dumbed down to waiting for leaks.

On the transparency scale, this administration is somewhere below the Nixon years.

Yeah. I'm actually with the Obama administration on this one. Leaking of classified information is illegal and should be prosecuted as such. Even leaking of non-classified information detracts from the ability of the Executive to exercise unity of command and govern well.

Which is okay up to a point. The executive branch, especially military and law enforcement have a well-known habit of overclassifying and redacting everything and there is little incentive for them to release information that the public has a right to know. Governing well does not have to be synonymous with governing in an opaque fashion.

 everyone who works for the executive signs a legally binding non-disclosure agreement. you violate it, that should be on you.

I'm not saying leakers shouldn't be punished. Just because it's a matter of course doesn't mean that the government doesn't need to be more transparent. Those are two separate arguments.
