That depends on whether it really affects the average American in some way. If it doesn't, Democrats were right not to negotiate because it was no big deal to have the government shut down. If it does, Democrats were right not to negotiate because no one should give in to these kinds of threats. This is a win - win for Democrats all the way around.
You can never be safe from a government that can keep you completely safe from each other and the world. You must choose.

Sure, they GOP only lost the presidential election in 1996 by... what? 200 electoral college votes?

So you are relying upon the left wing media to keep a non story alive for two years, Good luck with that.

And Bob Dole would have won by how many votes had the government not been shut down? Get a hold of yourself.

The wonderful thing is, there is nothing but Bob Doles in the GOP as far as the eye can see from now on.

As early as February 1996, Bob Dole was within 10% points of Bill Clinton. By late 1996, he had lost by 200 electoral votes. To what would you attribute that? Bob Dole being a weak candidate? Or the fact that Republicans had been playing chicken with the government all throughout 1995?

Ok, I see your feeble point, I glossed the names. So, tell me, what's the significance of losing 60 seats in the house?

Nah, you get to squirm yourself out of this one. May I suggest you get this book?

Reading Comprehension: Strategies for Independent Learners - Camille L. Z. Blachowicz, Donna Ogle - Google Books

It'll help you with your problem. As per the second part of your post: I already stated it: Republicans won mostly in weak Democrats districts that had been Republicans before. They also had a few victories in 4-5 historically Democrat places. In essence, the 2010 election was a return to the normality established in the 90s and only disrupted by the 2006-2008 elections.
