Pope Francis: Church can't 'interfere' with gays

I think it's refreshing to have a pope that recognizes that the church is going to have to change its stance on some things (or at least change how it approaches certain topics) to stay relevant to people as time moves on. And I think it's great that he's trying to focus more on the positive aspects of the catholic church rather than the negative ones.

Technically it would be an old direction. See, this pope actually takes the teachings of Jesus Christ seriously.

Except you're going beyond just "not agreeing with that lifestyle." You're trying to make sure other people aren't allowed to live it at all.

That would be incorrect. If I wanted that path, I could be an activist against homosexuality ALL FRIGGIN DAY here in Austin, TX.

But when it directly effects my relationship with my family, all bets are off.

"Friends" that feel good about themselves when you accuse them of being subversive or tell them that they're going to burn in hell?

You don't have gay friends. You have barely tolerable acquaintances who are decent enough that they have so far avoided punching you in the face.

After I was clear what I thought about them trying to come on to me, everything has been cool for years now.

Something you probably wouldn't understand. It is tolerance.

I didn't call you a bigot, I implied you might be one. Whether you are one or not is up to you. Do you want to deny rights and previliges to groups of people you dont like?

Calling a group by multiple derogatory terms is not tolerance.

If you want to tell yourself it's tolerance, whatever, but it's not tolerance. It's the exact opposite.

And don't go on about how it's "something I don't understand", because I understand it fully well. You saying it's something others don't understand is just you trying to justify what you think.

I respect this person more than his predecessors, but he is still the leader of an organization that has committed crimes, has discriminated and has been a negative influence for centuries. Hopefully he will turn the Vatican and the catholic church into more of what their prophet advocated, less old testament and more new testament.
 
The Catholic Church has been hemorrhaging followers over the past 5-10 years due to the molestation scandals and the previous Pope's stance on many different social issues. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the last Pope stepped down due to lack of popularity.

Now we have a Pope who is basically telling the Church to leave gays and lesbians alone.

This is proof positive that the will of the People even works in an institution as old as the Vatican.

Pope Francis has given us all a reminder of what the Church should stand for. Less Fire-and-brimstone type preaching and instead showing a loving, caring, compassionate institution. As Christians we are supposed to be less eager to judge and condemn others and be more ready to love and understand aren't we?

Really? My marriage seems to be going rather well even thought you and your ilk were telling me that gays getting married would destroy the institution of marriage.

Well prove to me God exists and we can talk. Because if he did he would have already come back and dealt with the so called "Christians" and done away with them. I have never seen a worse group of people as a whole in my life. Bigots, racist, woman haters, they say it in god name and they don't judge but everytime they open their mouths something nasty comes out. Like George Carlin said "keep thy religion to yourself"

^^ This is why I implied you're a bigot. You're calling other human beings that have done nothing to you and have harmed nobody a "creeping evil" and "destroying our society".

These have been the cries of every bigot in history, be it against the jews, the blacks, or even the gays.
