Active gunmen in US navy Yard [W:69, 700]

It's more evidence that we need to bite the bullet so to speak and repeal the 2nd Amendment. There was never a stupider more useless bit of chicanery pretending to protect rights than the 2nd Amendment.

While we're at it, we can make murder illegal, too. Oh, wait...

I think assuming a gun massacre was carried out by a muslim is clearly nothing but prejudice and confirmation bias Most gun massacres are carried out by rightwing gun nuts -- like the guy who did this one. But conservatives don't remember those since they don't fit their stereotype.

Meanwhile, whoever claimed that the killer in this case was a muslim extremist was dead wrong -- the guy was a Texan, with a concealed weapons permit, which is a lot worse.

Are you saying that since he's black, that explains everything?

Wuzzup with all those mass shootings. American exceptionalism I guess.

Re: Active gunmen in US navy Yard

Raise your hand if when you heard the news the first thing you thought was Muslim. Not saying it is, but that was my first thought.

When it is a business like place, I always think of a disgruntled employee.

Re: Active gunmen in US navy Yard

A fine example of the success the right wing media has had in forming prejudices in American minds. It may well be Islamic radicals but the mere fact that it was your first thought is just one more instance of irrational hatred.

Anyone remember when their first thought upon hearing of such an instance would have concerned a worker "going postal"?

That was my first thought without the Postal referrence

Re: Active gunmen in US navy Yard

Firstly, I'd just like to say that my thoughts and prayers are with those injured today and with the families of those who needlessly lost their lives just attending to their jobs.

What I do find disconcerting, however, is our need, reflected in our wall-to-wall media coverage, to witness in the minute these acts of mad-men and the destruction they cause. It reminds me of a thread on DP a few weeks back asking the question "would you watch a good-news channel" - based on today's coverage of this event, I'd have to conclude this is the type of coverage we as a society seem to crave. I wonder if it's possible that if we didn't "glorify" these events fewer people would commit such crimes.

I would add to this that after days of news coverage we all will know the shooters name and not much else.

I wish the news outlets would refer to him as the shooter and not inflict his name on us over and over again so we can't get it out of our heads.

The victims should be important, not what the shooter had for breakfast this morning.

Re: Active gunmen in US navy Yard

Reports are that the perp was a Buddist.

Yes isn't that odd.

Aren't they supposed to be the most peaceful of the religions?

Re: Active gunmen in US navy Yard

In other news, it has been discovered that Obama is personally responsible for baldness, erectile dysfunction, homosexuality, and that traffic light that always seems to turn red just as I get there.

Damn it I knew it!!!!

This is just terrible. My thoughts go out to all of the victims and their families.

This nonsense from you of all people? You have served in the Navy.... and for you to bring this type of crap into this particular thread is just disgraceful.

He was the second to post it but not to think it.

Big question is how he got a security clearlance.
It is reported that he was kicked out of the Navy.
In 2010 he shot his gun up through the floor of the apt above him whom he had run-ins over her noise.
In 2004 he shot out the tires of a car of two construction workers.

Does anybody see a red flag here?

That will be the $69,000 question.

Hmmm. If Cops are such ****ty gunmen, maybe the best thing to do is to not allow them to have weapons. Like in Europe, where peace officers carry batons.

The gangs and cartels would love that.

you didn't understand the bit where cops are FIVE TIMES MORE LIKELY TO SHOOT AN INNOCENT PERSON
Is that because cops are 50x more likely to be in dangerous situations than the average CCW person? How often do you find yourself in dangerous situations compared to the average cop patroling an urban area?

News reports say the gun man had several incidents involving a gun. How many incidents does it take before someone loses their gun rights?

Live in a society overflowing with guns, these incidents are less and less surprising. Get use to it America, as long as your 'obsession' with guns continue this will keep happening.

Yeah, Americans should follow the lead of the British. What could go wrong with letting the government ban guns.

that's contrary to known reality. and when NON LEOs are attacked by armed thugs, it is 99.99% of the time, at a time and place chosen by the criminal

it was illegal for him to obtain a weapon to start with.
it was illegal for him to go onto that base with a weapon
it was illegal for him to conceal a weapon
it was illegal for him to shoot people

one more law was going to stop a guy who was not deterred by the death penalty?

All we know is that they have nothing to do with guns.

It has to do with one psycho asshole eho went bezerk and a dozen different weapins and tactics to choose from.

But they nearly always 'choose' guns.

Where did you read about the origin of his firearms?

Where did you read about the origin of his firearms?

I didn't. I understand the law. It is illegal to obtain a firearm for the purpose of using it illegally
