Active gunmen in US navy Yard [W:69, 700]

Re: Active gunmen in US navy Yard

Firstly, I'd just like to say that my thoughts and prayers are with those injured today and with the families of those who needlessly lost their lives just attending to their jobs.

What I do find disconcerting, however, is our need, reflected in our wall-to-wall media coverage, to witness in the minute these acts of mad-men and the destruction they cause. It reminds me of a thread on DP a few weeks back asking the question "would you watch a good-news channel" - based on today's coverage of this event, I'd have to conclude this is the type of coverage we as a society seem to crave. I wonder if it's possible that if we didn't "glorify" these events fewer people would commit such crimes.

Re: Active gunmen in US navy Yard

I heard about this hours ago - watched some coverage, then saw the thread here. This is the first time 'Muslim' has entered my mind.

I think it is more likely to be one of those Christians you here so much about. I understand there are lots of them in the U.S.

There is even a possibility, outside possibility I admit, that it is some crazy person that has no strong religious affiliation.
geesh.

How many incidents of gunmen shooting at multiple victims has happened in the U.S. ober that last 10 years?
How many of the perpatrators have been Muslim?

I can hardly believe that someone would write a post like yours. I am continually amazed on this site.

Look at network news. I've seen questions about terrorism all morning and several references to the Fort Hood shooting and Nidal Hasan. I'm not saying that the gunman were Muslim. I will say that it's the first thing I thought of.

Let's put it this way, I would not be surprised if it was Muslim extremism, and I would be surprised if it wasn't.

Time will tell, it's a crazy world.

News says Aaron Alexis is the shooter.

The media is the biggest instigator of these violent acts. Look at Aurora, Sandy Hook, the Boston Bombings, Columbine, etc. If I were to ask you most would be able to give me an entire rundown of their lives, at the least the names of the people that carried it out. Most common people don't even know their representative in Congress, yet they can give a profile on a shooter and exactly how the shooting occurred. People that want to kill want to be seen, want their name to be known, and that is exactly what we are giving them by flooding their names to the public. While I agree it is the publics right to know who did such things, these events should not warrant 2 week long coverage.

Active gunmen in US navy Yard [W:69]

My money is on a disgruntled former employee.

12 dead, and the suspect.

Suspect is believed to be Aaron Alexis, 34 year old Texan contractor.

My condolences to the families who lost loved ones.

Maybe a causality of Obama's sequester....

Maybe just another hack trying to piggyback this situation into a political situation.

If the shoe fits.....

Word is there may have been a second shooter, a black male 5'10 with a long gun, possibly a shotgun.

Too soon? I was just kidding, but I should have added a smiley so I can see how you mistook it.

FOX news is saying the suspect was a veteran.

Re: Active gunmen in US navy Yard

I am very sad for all the family and loved ones of the murder victims of this horrendous attack. I hope that everyone who is connected to this horrible "terrorist like" attack on the Navy base will be found and prosecuted/jailed for life if found guilty.

I really don't understand the outrage over someone writing "my first thought was that it was a muslim". Can someone explain this to me and why we should just ignore the fact that we are in an open conflict with islamic extremists in multiple theaters, that such attacks adhere to the tactics they employ, and that such attacks have happened in the states previously?

I seriously don't get it.

Because the term "muslim" encompasses an entire religion, which includes about a billion people, and millions this country, who are as peaceful as the next guy and have nothing to do with the jihadists. It would be like saying, my first thought is that it's a Christian or a conservative, since a large number of domestic terrorists attacks are the result of radical anti-abortion rightwing Christians, or political rightwingers like McVeigh.

I'm sure Christians wouldn't appreciate that.

The odds of it being "a Muslim" shooting on American soil is vanishingly small

When there are few facts, speculation runs rampant.
But, when the reporters are expected to continuously report on a story for which there are few facts, what else can t hey do?
The sad part of all that is, once the facts are know, many people will still have heard only the various speculations.

He never asserted all muslims were violent or responsible for the attack. he asserted that his first thought was that the attacker was muslim

Ugh, if we were talking about an abortion clinic a Christian would be my first thought. The same would be true of you and everyone else rejecting the fact that in this attack his first thought was that the guy was muslim

I'm sure Christians wouldn't appreciate that.

Yeah, people get offended by all manner of reasonable assessments. Ever here of the saying "the truth hurts"? But someone taking offense to something doesn't mean it's not a reasonable or valid assessment

yes, but the attacks Islamic extremists have carried out in this country tend to be high profile, they often attack military installations over seas, and terrorists attacks have happened here in the past.

the general response to his comments acts like it's a comment that is coming totally from left field and that has no basis in reality, when that is simply not true
