A true representation of "Americana".

she must eat more greenery

she looks conservative too

You should be embarassed that in america there are are such contests like Miss america, miss black america, toddlers and tiaras, sweet 16 and all the other crap that is shoved collectively down the throat of the american people.

Yes, I feel oppressed by pageants that some woman enjoy. Let's do something about it.

The fact that some bitch won a contest that should have never existed is not a motive for embarassment. The fact that there is such a prize to win is an embarassment.

Why should it have never existed? Because you don't like it?

WOW, you don't really know the meaning or spelling of pariah. One billion in India are pariahs?

nina is american l think

isnt she ?

You are a pretty good twister. You mentioned they are pariahs in their own country.

thank you but l didnt do it intentionally

america is composed of immigrants ?

so it is their country ?

Please, don't be. This contest is nothing more than politics. It has nothing to do with beauty. :ssst:

Huh? I've never seen an ugly Miss America contestant, let alone winner.

Why? Modern technology has given virtually every idiot the ability to make his opinions known to the world, and in this case, even make news by being outrageous. I don't understand why this sort of thing even gets reported, let alone why anyone should be embarrassed by it.

True. The advent of the Internet just makes expressing opinions easier. Its not like if people are not expressing them means these opinions don't exist. Its no big deal and only makes people look stupid. Thankfully we now life in a time in history when most of the time all people will do is say ignorant things. 50 years ago she might have needed police protection.

He willing kind of makes me proud to be an American...for the first time (JUST KIDDING!!! :lamo.) Seriously, I love it when I see Americans of all stripes achieving their dreams proving the things we say about anything being possible for anyone isn't just an empty slogan, it really happens..

OK, her parents were almost certainly immigrants to the United States. But she was born in the United States (Syracuse, New York). She studies in the United States (University of Michigan). Has been living in Michigan since age 4. Her dad is a gynecologist. She has made the dean's list, won the Michigan Merit award, national honor society award and in 2006 she was placed runner-up in Miss Teen America.

She might not be as American as apple pie according to some but she seems a prototypical American woman and I do not see the big issue with her immigrant status. In one way or another, except for the American native indians, every man woman and child in the USA is descendent from immigrants.

It's not my taste in entertainment that is being discussed. It's the face that everyone who enjoys this crap has bad taste in entertainment and permits a cultural phenomenon to exist that can only do harm. It's not about oppression, I feel no such thing from this event. I just feel the stupidity oozing in through the internet.

Anyway, in response to the OP: Social media has its good sides, but the downside is that human stupidity is more apparent and obvious than ever. The good thing is that it's easier than ever to publicly shame these people. One Tweet and you're immediately a laughing stock.

I think the public response to the racist idiots on twitter is a promising sign.

1-only a handful of people give a damn about Miss America pageants
2-Only a handful of THOSE care about her ethnic and racial background
3-WTH is wrong with people that feel the need to be 'embarrassed' by the actions of a few or feel the need to assign the actions of those few to the whole?
QFT

LOL - When did they even hold this event? And more importantly, WHY are they even bothering?

It does make for good movie though: :D

Actually, what's supposed to be discussed here is the fact that for some idiotic reason, many Americans think that:

American = white

and anything different than white is somehow not "American".

And also that many think:

brown = terrorist

"Many" Americans do NOT feel that way. Why do you want to give the impression that Americans are racists? Why the self-hatred? Do you know many racists or something? Personally, I don't know any.

Your stupid tweets prove nothing.

I think it is only a small minority who does such a thing. I also think that only a small percentage of Americans feels truly this way.

Where are you getting "many"?

Exactly, every country has it's portion of its population that is ignorant. It isn't limited to any one country or region. It is a world wide phenomenon.

So embarrassed at times to be American.

My best advice is to not take a site where people can psuedo anonymously post 140 words or less about issues in a snap judgement sort of way as a broad cross section and example of America to be embarrassed by.

People on Twitter are obnoxious and there are idiots on there, but in the grand scope of things they're likely not representative of the every day person.

Those tweets are ridiculous, and yet par for the course for twitter more so than for "america".

This fits your simple-minded views. It's actually quite the opposite.

"Brown" and "black" people vote and think generally in lock step. It's white people that are vastly more diverse in their opinions and thought processes.

You've got the argument entirely backwards.

Ah... so we'll replace Dragonflys perception of racism... with actual racism.

Well done Erod.

I posted the comments below earlier this morning on the first thread about this topic and see now that this thread has taken over for that one so I'll post my comments again here:

I didn't watch this "event" and I don't know anything about the young woman, but seems to me that this is just the result of political correctness run amok.

Personally, my heritage way back is partly English, partly Irish, and partly French, but no one in my family refers to themselves as hyphenated Canadians in any way, we're just Canadians. And it often bothers me, particularly as I get older and crankier, when people from other countries, less fortunate countries, take advantage of our national generousity to relocate here for a better life yet bring all their former country's problems and disputes with them, protesting on our streets for ills halfway around the world and push their cultural and religious traditions on the people who gave them a new life.

I'd be interested in knowing how often this young woman's Indian heritage was put on display during the pagent and the issue of her heritage was highlighted. If she was simply referred to as any other American, then the comments made would be inappropriate and uncalled for. If, however, she was promoted as Indian-American, I fully understand why people who are just plain Americans would be ticked off. I may not like it, but I fully understand it.
