oh yes, because i normally trust neocon libertarian rags.

That wasn't the best source, but it is true. Maryland has some of the most gerrymandered and least compact districts in the nation, even accounting for the oddly shaped Chesapeake Bay coastline.

Of course this is generally the case for most states who don't have independent commissions to draw their districts and are heavily dominated by either party in the state legislature.

Two-thirds of all gerry-mandered seats in the House belong to the GOP.
As we saw in 2012 when the total Democratic vote for 435 House members was higher than that of Republicans.
This is the way the senate was supposed to have run.
Repubs now have it both ways.

NIMBY.. let me help you through this.. This is not a Federal issue rather a State issue. This is about Annapolis redrawing districts for extra state seats and 6th congressional district seat. The people of Western Maryland got shafted on political purpose. They went from a Republican district to "Democrat" because Annapolis decided to cut 1/3rd of their voting block and give it to another Republican district, then gave Western Maryland voters from the DC metro area (liberal). So instead of 2 Republican districts, you now have one. This is despite the fact that Western Maryland represents 40% of vote prior to the gerrymandering.
Gerry all the way.

And Annapolis windbags justify it as it's "fair".. well if 40% of your vote get 0% representation.. then that's a problem.

It just doesn't look like it belongs.
If they want to go to west Virginia where the policies are more to their liking, so be it.
Just like Northeast Colorado going to Nebraska or Wyoming. Good riddance.

Maryland's borders are based on the Potomac and ends at the Fairfax Stone, Mason-Dixon Line and Bay. Maryland should actually encompass 3 or 4 counties of current West Virginia that lay south of the Potomac in Western Maryland due to the South Branch of the Potomac but Supreme Court ruled against it in 1864.

West Virginia doesn't belong either. You had people in Western Virginia succeed from Virginia in 1863 over political views. So it's okay to create a new State that gave favor to the North in Constitutional voting after the Civil War but creating West Maryland is unthinkable?

The problem with calling this a "movement" is that formation of new states (or new state boundaries) is never going to happen peacefully and they lack the means to do so by force. Insanity is not all that interesting.

Same thing is happening in Colorado. Northern counties are trying to get a referendum on the ballet. Still would take an act of Congress, which I doubt would ever happen....unless the polls supported it.

And if you want to see ridiculously gerrymandering, this is a fun read. Its a few years old, but still applies. And as usual, this is just another one of those problems that will only be fixed by a robot.

Yeah I do...........there are several states (Washington where I live being one) where 80% of the counties where the voters are moderate to conservative and the Seattle Tacoma corridor where a huge population is all Liberal....It actually equals thing out.

Like many CONs you fail to understand how our system works. Square miles don't vote. People do. According to the 2012 vote the split is more like 60/40 not 80% on CONservative counties. Obama won reelection by 15% more of the vote. So not quite even anyway ya skin that cat. (FYI given all the RINO crap and 'not a true CONservative' dribble counting moderates along with CONs seems a bit of a reach.)

Anyway, as I expected, you have no basis to claim that FL has pushed for separation.

It got 31,000 signatures in under 30 days, the time deadline. 25,000 are required to get an official response from the White House...

According to City data forums in 2008 south Florida wanted to break away. They are talking about it in their forum.

I find it difficult to believe you have lived there for 'decades' and missed any talk of secession. Maybe when you was out of the country?

I talk about it all the time. Im hardly representing Florida. We have 20 million people here.

2008 would be around when I was writing my proposal, in Miami or Gainesville. I'm not sure how I missed the petition news, probably because it was insignificant and largely fodder for pundits.

Understand. However, if you think Gerry-mandering is bad in Maryland, look at Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina. This is why Texas was on the watch list since 1990. And now the SCOTUS is involved. Voting rights is the issue of this Century so far.

We have 100 Senators and 435 Representatives. As righties would say, get over and used to it. My solution to petition out and change states to West Virginia remains on the table.

I don't know why you say that. If its the will of the people it could very well happen. You live in a state where your vote counts. I don't. I vote for the Conservative or Moderate candidate every time but because I live in a Western Wash a very liberal area of the state my candidate who many times is the better candidate never wins.

My problem is I love Washington state. To me its God country. I lust don't like the politics. I have been here for 36 years and will die here and be buried at Tahoma National Cemetery.
