Voyager 1 probe becomes first man-made object to leave solar system[W:16]

Science Friday is always great. But seriously, its in the Oort cloud, where comets are in orbit around the sun. That sounds like the solar system to me. The heliosphere seems kind of arbitrary. As they played on that intro to the interview, they were saying Voyager left the solar system ten years ago. It depends on the definition...

And j-mac... I dont know why you'd want to listen. You dont believe that science stuff anyway.

So dont listen to this:

Climate Conspiracy 1: Scientists falsify data

or this:

Climate change skepticism makes strange bedfellows
OH, please, please, not another science thread morphing into an AGW it's a hoax, no it's not, yes it is, see here, this is a real genuine bona fide scientist who said the Earth was getting cooler forty years ago, and onandon. Been there, done that.

As for where the solar system ends and interstellar space starts, let's ask the people who decided that Pluto isn't a planet after all.

Personally, I really don't know.

I'm glad I lived long enough to see this day. A magnificent achievement. Makes me proud.

You will live forever DiAnna

Um, no, Voyager 1 is no where near the Oort Cloud. It is in the scattered disk somewhere outside the Kupier Belt. And the inner part of the Oort Cloud is about 1 light year from the sun. Voyager 1 is not even a light day away from the sun.

I think that the definition was the influence of the suns magnetosphere to the interstellar medium. While I could not find out in the article the outer distance of the Oort cloud I remember that the average distance of gravitational influence is about 3 light years some parts would be less due to the Alpha Centari stars and others would be greater.

they briefly talked about it in that science friday interview. I think the guy who was in charge of the voyager project basically stated you could argue over the exact definition of "interstellar", but that for practical purposes you could say such. I was in the middle of calibrating a sensor, so Kinda missed the details

From CNN:

NASA's Voyager 1 probe has become the first man-made object to enter interstellar space, the U.S. space agency announced Thursday.

Scientists report they have strong evidence that the unmanned spacecraft has crossed the magnetic boundary separating the solar system's sun, planets and solar wind from the rest of the galaxy. The announcement comes more than 36 years after the unmanned spacecraft lifted off on a journey that gave humans close-up views of Jupiter and Saturn before heading toward deep space.

So far from home and all alone. Can't help getting emotional because there's no words for just how brilliant this is. Congratulations to NASA and all involved, such an amazing accomplishment.

To infinity, and beyond!

Re: Voyager 1 probe becomes first man-made object to leave solar system

You know, I'm a big time hater of NASA. I have stated numerous times that I think it's a waste of money right now. However, this is pretty cool. I hope that Voyager 1 continues to function and can transmit pictures back to us. I would fully support continuing to fund this particular program. I wish a car maker could make vehicle that could last as long as this thing has lol.

Now this is awesome. It's not every day you see people who dislike certain government programs admit sometimes they have some good in them.
