House Speaker John Boehner will support strike on Syria

Your constitution is only as powerful and as weak as the citizens of your country allow it to be. If the President, and the congress, agree that attacking Syria or any other country is a preemptive or defensive strike to protect the US, who's going to challenge that decision? Are you or someone else going to take the government to court? Do you think the Supreme Court would overrule congress and the President when it comes to national defense?

In my view, the only time that happens is if the President and congress disagreed.

Well I will certainly agree with you on that. So many Americans don't know and/or don't care what the constitution says. Presidents have violated it without repercussions many times, its considered a god damn piece of paper that gets in the way of policy, its been treated as something that could be used to wipe ones ass, but it doesn't change what it is and it's guiding principles. I can assure you CJ that reaching halfway around the world and attacking a country that has not threatened or attacked us is a violation of our constitution as well as subsequent legislation.

Sometimes I am envious of your parliamentary system.

Sometimes I am envious of your parliamentary system.

Perhaps one of the best benefits of our system is that the Prime Minister is just one vote in the House of Commons and as the leader of the government is held to account during question period each day the House sits. While generally speaking, all members of the governing party vote in lock-step with the leader, he/she can be replaced by the members of the governing party and that has happened many times in our past. Likewise, no Prime Minister can involve Canada in a war without the expressed consent of the House of Commons.

Your system benefits from a "separation of powers" until such time as one of the "powers" tries to overstep their rights and powers. Our system benefits from a mixing of powers until such time as we have a minority government and nobody can agree on anything.

Democracy, either a republic or parliamentary, is sometimes messy and moreso when men and women don't act within their powers.

You know, I have long said that it does not matter what Obama wants, the GOP will obstruct. I mean, as I have said many times before, Obama could find the cure for cancer or stop world hunger and the GOP would filibuster. That's what they do. The party of "No." The do-nothing bunch. Those partisan hacks with such a hatred for the black Obama, they can't think or see straight. Their hatred for him is stronger than their love for country, as we have seen so many times.

I have come to expect that. In fact, on this issue, attacking Syria, I was hoping the GOP would hold their course and go against Obama's desire to attack Syria.

But noooooooooooo........

On this, they will support him. I guess their hate for Obama does not overcome their love for war. What was I thinking in the first place? The GOP say "No," to a war? No way.

Not to worry as the antithesis is also applicable. If the GOP says 'go to war' Obama will do the opposite and...do nothing.

...which is what he wants ultimately.

We will only hope your right about that.

It wouldn't be like them to support the highly unfavorable war as they know later on in time it will be fully owned by Obama. That would just make 2016 like taking candy from a baby.
Partisan First.
Back pockets Second.
American people Third.

I'm sure they will make sure just enough of them vote for the war to make sure it happen but not so many as to be a majority.

Article is here.

OK, it's good that Boehner, along with Cantor, are putting aside differences to back Obama on this............. But do we really need to do this? That is the question. Whatever intel Obama showed Boehner, it evidently persuaded him. However, Obama needs to persuade the American people, and keeping the reasons secret from the American people is not going to cut it.

Obama, show the American people what you have. We demand it.

Boner and Cantor are idiots. Anyone that votes for it should be run out of office.

I don't care if they gassed a million freaking people. Not our god damn job. Period.

Are you kidding me? Obama does not even fully own the "red line" idea anymore.

Obama railed constantly against the "Bush" tax rates and yet kept 98.6% of them exactly the same - he did bump taxes for the top 1.4% but that (and more) was spent in the first month of 2013. Is it not very, very odd that nobody seems to care how much this "mini war" is going to cost? That's right, it is a "crisis" so it doesn't have to be subject to any "pay as you go" spending offsets. Why no discussion of reopening the White House for tours (or stopping that other evil sequestration) if we are so flush with cash now that we can start a "mini war"?

I wouldn't be so sure that Boehner was persuaded by evidence. Wouldn't be surprised if Obama offered him a few political carrots in the coming political battles to sweeten the deal. Can't believe Boehner is going along with this.

Even if I was a decrepit politician with compass-less morality and had the ethics of a back stabbing lawyer I wouldn't make a deal with Obama since I could not trust him to carry thru on any promise. Thankfully, I am not a politician nor decrepit; I have the moral virtue-hood of at least the average person; and I do have a standard of ethics that I hold up to. Also, I do not do back stabbing; I drop them into a pit.

Boehner is a monkey humping a football...I am surprised that he wasn't shown asking Obama's permission to agree.

At least he wasn't crying.

Like I said in an earlier post. Methinks Obama knows exactly what he's doing on this and we are all being played like a fiddle. He's acting all bad-ass like he wants to blow Syria off the map. But it's all an act. This way, he can avoid the war, put it to the people, (as if congress actually represented the people,) and come out looking like a hero, unlike his predecessors who rushed head-on into a middle east quagmire.

Thats just the goofiest of positions. Some support it, some dont. thats shockingly similar to the vote tally of...gasp...the democrats in congress (and BTW...on this site as well). But...all you can see is "the republicans" vs Obama. And you think THEY are deranged.

All we can see is what we've been shown. And we surely have been shown that the Republicans vs. Obama at every turn, regardless. Except, of course, when there might be a good ol' war available, but I digress.

Knowing this, I think Obama is playing it (them,) to the hilt. We will see.

Ill take Obama looking like a hero if the trade off is, we don't attack a sovereign nation that hasn't attacked us killing who knows how many civilians in the process, violating international law and risking involving other regional states or worse, Russia. Let the fool look like a hero. But then, I seriously doubt that that's what this is about.

original statement stands. There have been plenty of news reports on democrats and their votes and positions on Syria. Yet all you can see is teh eeeevil republicans and their opposition to Obama.

Do YOU support an attack on Syria? To what end? Do you support the Arab funded war discussed by Kerry or the 75,000 US troops required to secure chemical weapons depots? Do you support the rebels in Syria? If so...does that make you just another neocon republican war monger? If not is it just because you hate Obama because he is black?

You REALLY cant see how stupid your position is?

Well, I CAN see how stupid your position is. Maybe I will look at mine a bit closer. Of course, you wouldn't even consider doing the same. That's what makes me the wiser person here Vance.

What is it do you suppose my position is? And are you REALLY saying that you are focusing on the republicans vs Obama situation without even knowing YOUR OWN position?

Oh yes. You REEK of 'wisdom'....

I knew it!!!!

I pretty much called it. I knew Obama was giving a dog and pony show with his "Let's kick Syria's ass," drama. It just didn't add up. Obama acting like a war dog? That's something we'd expect from a rightwingnut neocon, but Obama? Further, I don't think Obama was that good an actor. I couldn't put my finger on what he was going after but I knew that something wasn't kosher.

If his little strategy will result in Syria giving up their poison gas, keeping it out of the future hands of who ever ends up taking over that country when it is all said and done over there, I say kudos to Obama. Well played old man! This guy must be a genius. Crazy like a fox.
