Obama: "US should take military action against Syria", seeks Congressional Apporval

Re: Obama: "US should take military action against Syria", seeks Congressional Apporv

I suppose he could, but in my view, it still doesn't make it right. But this time, I have the feeling the president is looking for a way around his red line. By going to congress and having them vote down the use of force... Well you know.

And then he doesn't enforce the same treaty he did for Libya?

Re: Obama: "US should take military action against Syria", seeks Congressional Apporv

The thing is the President could have obtained congressional approval. The votes were there.

Perhaps he's not sure what to do at this point? It looks to me that anything that is done is Syria might be the wrong thing for America to do. We shouldn't take sides in this religious war between opposing factions, IMO.

Appearances are everything.

I think there is no right side. I think what Obama had in mind is akin to President CLinton did after the embassy bombings in Africa. He lobbed a few cruze missiles into afghanistan. That didn't accomplish a thing, but was more a face saving thing to do. But since then a lot of those responsible for the embassy bombings have either been killed or brought to justice. A few still remain at large.

Re: Obama: "US should take military action against Syria", seeks Congressional Apporv

Appearances are everything.

There would be the appearance that his enforcement of the treaty the first time was not necessary and thus his actions were illegal.

That is something to think about. Perhaps our founding fathers were right about not becoming entangled in foreign alliances. Libya worked out, I do not think Syria will. Too many bad guys on both sides. In my opinion we should sit this one out entirely.

The founding fathers lived in a world without computers, airplanes, WMD or globalization. I think their foreign policy remarks should be considered in context.

"How to win friends and influence people." Good book that should be required reading, IMO.

Perhaps, but whether or not we go to war should be decided on the U.S.'s best interests. Yep, a lot has changed.

Do people really read anymore. Or is everything decided on a snazzy one liner or the slogan of the day?

Ironically enough nobody in the administration has mentioned how it's in the U.S. best interest to be involved. In addition to failing to mention that the rebel forces have been infiltrated by Al-Qaeda.

Info wars, right? The folks that believe 9/11 was an inside job (wait, you do too). Snore

Wrong... On both counts, because this takes the position that we are at war with terrorist groups like Alquaida.

Alquaida, one of the main focuses of the war on terror counts themselves amongst the Assad rebels... This has been well documented in pretty much every news outlet.

If helping a group we are at war with is not treason, then what is?!?

My sentiments exactly. This is one I hope we just stay out of. All the way out of.

I am still an avid reader. The younger generation reads, too, but it's usually what their friends are doing on Facebook, or what Paris Hilton and the Kardashians are doing. But they are reading! :lamo:

If it's so urgent, why not call congress back from recess?

Because it is the perfect excuse for Obama to back down "gracefully", without actually having to appear to want to do so; Obama simply waits for the congress critters to tell him that he must back down, like the Parliament did in the UK. If things in Syria get worse then Obama simply blames congress (emphasizing that the GOP was wrong, of course) for making him back down, if things get better in Syria then Obama can claim that his "hard line stance" has caused the change for the better. ;)

That's not what I would call reading. But then again, when I was a kid, all I read was comic books, tons of them and then continued reading in adult life. But I graduated to history, bio's, etc. I am currently reading a book on Kit Carson, a bio not an adventure tale. After that is one on Teddy Roosevelt. Then I have one written by Dutch Van Kirk, the navigator of the Enola Gay. He doesn't live that far from me.

Either he gets Congressional backing or he doesn't. If he does he can go ahead without regrets. If not he can blame it on Republicans.

Re: Obama: "US should take military action against Syria", seeks Congressional Apporv

That's the War Powers Act. I believe that Obama has never heard of that, or least not before he was elected to his first term.

I can hear him now, "The War Powers Act? What's that?"

Yes, it's the WPA. Sorry, made a mistake in saying it's the Constitution.

I started out with comic books, too! I took a speed-reading course some years ago, because I complained to the Library Lady that there were just too many writers, and only one me to read them all! :lamo: She used to hold books for me that she thought I might like. Best course I ever took, Pero! It didn't help me too much in college, though, because I found that I had to take notes, but fictional reading? I sail through those! I love the Science Fiction genre, especially anything with dragons and wizards. You know that because of Polgara, my avator. I also like anything historical, going all the way back to Ancient Egypt. Too much to read...too little time!

Are you still writing?

Yep, I have finished the book which I call 'RUN OVER BY A BANGKOK BUS", based on my personal experiences in Southeast Asia. I may have told you that before and now have finished two western books, Rouge Justice and Revenge or Justice. I enjoy it and it takes my mind off things. I might have a publishers for RUN OVER BY A BANGKOK BUS, not sure yet. I am dealing with who gets what rights. I'll hang onto it if I am not happy with the deal.

You like SCI-FI, did I send you 6 Realms, a novella that isn't that long. It won first place on Francis Capola's ZOETROPE site. I told you about that, didn't I.

Regarless, time for bed. Good night one and all.

No to both your questions, Pero. Catch up with you on the morrow.

Re: Obama: "US should take military action against Syria", seeks Congressional Apporv

I think he is making a mistake. The embarrassment from a Congressional defeat could be extraordinary. There is ample precedent in history for a limited military intervention without Congressional authorization going all the way back to Jefferson. If he thought it was necessary (and I agree that it is) he should have taken quick and decisive action.

He must have a good reason for doing this as it makes no sense to me... He knows dam well that the far right conservatives in the House--even if they wanted us to go into Syria--will vote no just to make him look weak... Perhaps he is hoping that if they know he will go in anyway, they will vote yes... The only other reason that I can think of is that he wants to do more than just a limited and narrow strike, especially if there is retaliation... Right now he looks weak, the Free Syrian Army feels betrayed, The Regime and Iran feel emboldened and I feel embarrassed...

Re: Obama: "US should take military action against Syria", seeks Congressional Apporv

I agree it will be struck down because of partisan issues/ political moves liek it was in the House of Commons. I think Obama is trying to back off from this issue and getting struck down in congress gives him an excuse.

I would be gravely disappointed in him if that was the case...

Re: Obama: "US should take military action against Syria", seeks Congressional Apporv

I didn't support our going into Iraq, or Afghanistan, and I don't support our intervention in Syria either.

I think the rest of the world should take some ****ing responsibility too. Saddam murdered innocent human beings, he should have been taken down over two decades ago and it should have been with the support of the rest of the world and with the blessing of the UN if they actually gave a **** about human rights violations over their own political motivations. If Syria is using chemical weapons on civilians then their fate should be sealed as well and the US being an ocean away shouldn't be the only one responsible for acting on that.

We get bitched at for getting involved and bitched at if we don't.

(frustration directed against the situation and not you)
