'War-weary' Obama says Syria chemical attack requires response - CNN.com

"I assure you nobody ends up being more war-weary than me," Obama said, adding that he was not considering any option that would entail "boots on the ground" or a long-term campaign. Instead, Obama said, he and his top military and security aides were looking at a "limited, narrow act" to ensure that Syria and others know the United States and its allies won't tolerate future similar future violations.

Thoughts? Questions? Invitations to dinner?

Re: "No boots on the ground in Syria," Says Obama

Boots on the ground was never an option.

I made pea soup with potatoes and fried onions.

Re: "No boots on the ground in Syria," Says Obama

Obama smart. Bush dumb.

It comes down to that.

Re: "No boots on the ground in Syria," Says Obama

I think that anybody who uses the term "boots on the ground" needs to be sent to Syria to be gassed. That is an incredibly dehumanizing term. Our military troops are people, human beings.

I guess that means he's going with the "air or missile strike option" then. We should not be doing this at all, he should have the balls to just pull the ships back to base and leave Syria to it's own devices.

Anyone wanna bet that after any "air or missile strike" Syrian TV trots out pictures of "collateral damage?" I bet several kids and women will show up dead after an "air or missile strike."

I voted for Obama twice. Thank God he can't run for a third term. :moody

When will you just accept that some things need to be done. How many repubs and dems will need to do the same thing before you think "hey, maybe I'm wrong".

Re: "No boots on the ground in Syria," Says Obama

Drawing more lines in the sand. LOL. 5th grade stuff and he's the President.

He's turned us into the laughing stock of the world.

Excuse me?? Hmm, maybe you missed the half dozen times I've said this PLUS the hello post I made in the come say hi section:

WE ARE NOT THE WORLD'S POLICEMAN!!

It is NOT our job to go fix everyone elses woes through the use of military force. People need to deal with their own issues, that's the only way it will be resolved with any possibility of stable success. In case you missed it again...we are not the world's policeman.

The only thing I support is humanitarian aid, refugee sanctuary, and diplomatic options that do not involve military intervention. Period!

Don't worry you were a laughing stock before Obama.

I agree with your assessment on being the world's policeman but I see nothing wrong with an air strike to remove chemical weapons.

Well have boots on the ground in a few months likely. I think this is just stall, but Obama seems very interested in perpetuating our occupational wars of the Middle East. But in that light, he may very quickly ramp up military intervention that doesn't revolve around sending in ground troops. Bombing people from afar is another time tested American President value. And Obama loves his drones.

Really? Aside from being an ACT OF WAR...you see nothing wrong with an air strike on a nation we are not at war with?

Not to mention the possibiity of collateral damage. Pretty term isn't it... sounds like a nice replacement for the "oops we killed a bunch of innocent civilians" phrase it replaces.

Then of course there is the little matter of pissing off other nations who already have the opinion we are a bully, and scaring nations who used to be our freinds because we act like loose cannons.

Don't forget that enduring problem we have with all the mad terrorists who were created and are maintained by our continuous interference in their countries.

So unless an ally we have a mutual defense treaty with is involved or we are directly threatened, we do not have either the Right or the Duty to take military action ANYWHERE.

You don't see how that would be a "police action" on our part? There's no guarantee that air strikes would remove chemical weapons. Nor could the US guarantee that such a strike wouldn't not inflict deaths on innocent civilians, including women and children.

It's certainly more than a warning ticket. Our intervention could instigate consequences that the US just don't need.

I am glad you said that. It has always struck me as odd that back in the days of yore, people found out that we were thinking about bombing them when the bombs were falling on them. Why do we have to do long periods of political posturing, particularly when it just gives them time to prepare and move things about so that we won't be hitting many chemical weapons to begin with? (asked rhetorically of course)

Other than explosions tend to disperse the chemicals?

Re: "No boots on the ground in Syria," Says Obama

I agree with one thing Kerry said today: The use of chemical weapons by anyone anywhere is a threat to the US and to the world.

Yes, I said I agreed with Kerry....I'm going to go have a drink.

He didn't fool me the first time. He was the best candidate and had the most promise. His own party screwed him dithering that first year when he controlled both houses of Congress. The second term? Mitt Romney was an idiot.

McCain was far more centrist than Obama, that's for certain, and Romney has far more management experience than both of them even if he did come off as a Mr. Rogers.

How long did it take for Al Franken to be seated, then giving Democrats their 60 votes?

Well mac: first and foremost I personally believe that it can't get any worse than what the civilians are putting up with now regardless.

But here is an excerpt from Time magazine on how the military plans on dealing with that situation.

That’s why Pentagon officials suggest that any U.S. and allied military strike against Syria will tilt toward military, and command and control, targets —including artillery and missile units that could be used to launch chemical weapons — instead of the bunkers believed to contain them.

Re: "No boots on the ground in Syria," Says Obama

Why won't Boehner call for a vote, as the British Parliament did? Would Boehner invite the President to "debate" as the Brits do?

In other words, no matter how many times reality refutes you, you will remain dogmatic and absolutist on the issue. Ok.

It's a commonly used phrase in the military itself. Get a ****ing grip. Why don't you take up your quibble with Martin Dempsey while you're at it?

During a House Armed Services hearing, Dempsey was asked whether the United States could send troops to Syria for a possible peacekeeping mission.
"At this point in time, congressman, a decision is that we will not have any boots on the ground and that that we will not act unilaterally in that part of the world," Dempsey said.
