Britain will not be joining the US in immediate military action against Syria. The House of Commons has just voted against supporting the government's plans for bombing raids against Assad's forces by 13 votes. It looks like it'll be just the US and France. I wonder who are going to get the 'cheese-eating surrender monkey' treatment now.

nothing about this conflict will end well.

the Syrian people are the true losers in all this. they are dying and there is nothing that can be done to stop it.

I got a sneaking feeling that Cameron will ignore this vote and do it any ways, by providing logistical support...

That's great news Andalublue, hopefully our congress will vote on it here as well and vote the will of 91% of Americans!

Cameron said he won't.

I got a feeling you would like that too!

I don't think it's in the US national interest to attack Syria.

That wouldn't be ignoring the vote, as what they vetoed was specifically direct military intervention, not logistical support.

I'm not sure I fully believe in this war on Syria. I'm still questioning the intelligence that says the Syrian govt used chem weapons. There seem to be contradictory stories.

I know.. which means that US bombers could be flying from UK bases in Cyprus or the UK it self.. naw, that is not "direct military intervention".. just logistical support :)

Fact is Cameron got his ass handed to him, not only by the opposition but by his own party.. because he could not present a good enough argument for a military strike.. The evidence he presented to parliament is laughable and the vote showed this.

Cameron said he won't.

He also said he would not cut the NHS and many other things that he had gone ahead and done any ways.. he is a politician that certainly can not be trusted. The big question is if the Lib Dems will stick with him if he does.. if not, then it is election time, and that will be fun.

I think you're right to question it. I'd say that until there is any hard evidence to sustain it, there's as much reason to suspect the rebels as there is to suspect the government. Both sides have been carrying out atrocious actions over the past 2 years. It would be counterproductive to attack only the government side; in fact it wouldn't be untenable to claim that by doing so you would be definitively aiding Al Qaeda.

It would appear the US and UK citizens are a bit war-weary after the last decade, especially after both sets of citizens now know they were lied to.

A different level of scrutiny is being used this decade for this POTUS.

The Amash/NSA/liberal anti-war coalition is taking hold.

I'm not sure if it is actually a war on Syria. My understanding is the plan is to just rain hell down on a few key Syrian targets and tell them never to do it again, akin to spanking a disobedient child.

Minister of Defence on Newsnight at the moment saying that they have understood the vote and will not be participating. Phillip Hammond said, "We are clear that we are not going to be part of any military action. We are also becoming clear that we may not be involved in any discussion or planning of any action."

We shall see.. lets just say I dont trust the Tories further than I can throw them.

What I want is the freaking evidence they claim to have... the world wants it, but why are they not releasing it?

I'm not surprised by this and France has already said they won't participate until the UN inspectors report. A similar vote in the US congress would be likely, in my view, if it ever got there.

Oh well if more chemical weapons are used in the region against more civillians I hope those MP's who voted this down can look at themselves in the mirror. Spineless.

Are Syria and Obamacare 'tied' together?

Is it funny to watch Limbaugh puff on his cigar as Cruz comes up with this political garbage?

Who do individual Americans think they are to demand evidence from Obama before action is taken?

That might have worked for Libya, but Syria is not Libya. Unless the US takes out the chemical plants, it won't make difference in Assads forces going to door to door and killing people. But they can't take out the chemical plants without risking what they are accusing Assad of doing. It's quite a catch-22.

The US still can't say whether the chemicals weren't used by the rebels or Al Qaeda getting hold of the Syrian governments chemicals. But in the next day or two Obama will be coming out and saying all the circumstantial evidence points to Assad's government.

I forget where I came across what I read this morning, but it was mentioned that there would be 2 parliament votes by the U.K. The one today - which was insinuated that it stood a good chance of failing -, and then a second vote after the UN report.

how many more people have to die before we intervene?

Don't worry in a few years we will make a movie about the slaughter and then we will all vow " never again" like we did after Rwanada.

It is impossible to have a vote in the US Congress when Boehner will not call them back into session. The US House has 40 working days in the last 4 months of this year, Sep-9, Oct-14, Nov-9, Dec-8. Good message to the World?

Britian can still become involved if this becomes a NATO operation - I doubt it will - I know my government here in Canada has said they will not be offering any military assistance - but it's always possible if Turkey brings the issue up and requests action.
