Some school districts quit healthier lunch program

"Good" and "bad" food is largely about perception. My wife did a test of that one time with a bunch of people were over. She made one of her casual smorgasboard feasts - adults and kids alike gobbing it down. Then she tacitly got the conversation going about vegetarians - for which the consensus was all negative about it.

Not one person realized the meal was entirely vegitarian, including the hotdogs, "sloppy joes," grilled brats and all the rest was entirely vegetarian. We're not vegetarian, though do limit red meat. Rather, the point is what is good food and bad food has a lot to do with how the food is prepared and presented. Telling kids "eat this because it's good for you" isn't the way to do it.

It isn't the only problem, but it's a problem.

Wasn't a problem when I was a kid, and isn't the problem now. What is different between when I was a kid and now? I'll give you a hint, it isn't the food that's different...

Actually the food probably does have more added sugar/etc. You act like it's a bad thing to give kids healthier food.

Probably? Based on what?

I'm not saying it's bad, I'm saying it's bad to FORCE it.

And in the UK you are programmed to be sheep You have except the the states philosophy that your not capable to make your own decisions and need the state to make them for you

sheep or we have an abudance of common sense something you are clearly lacking when you get children dictate your school lunch programms.

With everything else we're being asked to swallow, school lunches aren't that much of a problem.

Again, they're not forcing it. You can bring a lunch. As far as more sugar, one example I can think of is chocolate milk. We didn't have that when I was in elementary school, but did when I entered in to middle school. Guess what? When chocolate milk wasn't an option I just drank the unflavored milk!

Any small children want to learn to be tolerant today?

We definitely had chocolate milk when I was a kid, drank it EVERY day. So guess there isn't more sugar.

I agree. When my wife turned 40 she decided to drop a few pounds and get in better shape. She made some dietary changes (not a diet, that is temporary as are the results) and joined a gym. And she stuck with it. She looks great and feels better. Here are some surprising things I discovered about food:

Tortillas are an excellent substitute for other kinds of bread.
Avocados are awesome.
Grilling vegetables changes them completely and you can use a pump sprayer for olive oil.
I... love turkey burgers. With steak seasoning.
Wheat Thins and Triscuits are better than fried chips.
Hummus is actually really good. Frozen yogurt has come a looooong way.
And perhaps more importantly:

If you change some of the little things you can still drink beer and eat bacon at 44 years old without getting fat or pissing off your wife.

Chocolate milk was around when I was a kid. There was still a lack of fat kids. We had pizza, burgers, candy and coke machines and still there was a lack of fat kids.

How old are you? There were fat kids when I was little (20 years ago, if you define little as 10 years old). Besides, weight isn't the only concern. You can be skinny and unhealthy. Plus, it's a good thing, for later in life, for kids to get used to eating healthier food.

30. There was maybe one fat kid at my school and his parents were huge, so..

27. Weight is the driving factor behind these changes, and it is documented that kids are more obese today. BUT, there is zero evidence that it is from the food as the food has not changed. What has changed? Kids are not as active, that is what has changed.

Even if weight was the driving factor I'd still go back to one of my original comments. Someone is more likely to have the energy to be more active if they eat healthier food.

yes and they continued to carry on eating that kind of food into adulthood and became fatter the older they got. Maybe if they had been taught about healthy foods and exposed to it they might have thought twice about that big mac.

It is called allowing the parents of the children to decide what is best for their children and not allowing the state to make that decision. it called surrendering your right to allow the state to make that decision on your behalf that you have been programmed to do.
You have become children of the state there for you are a dependent of your state that will never experience true freedom as long as you are a dependent of the state just like children dont have true freedom

KIDS ARE GOING HUNGRY and FOOD JUST GETS TRASHED. Isn't government wonderful?

ROTFLOL... typical of government. They stick their nose in, waste taxpayer money, and Fail. In most cases they just pour in more money, but it's not so easy here... you can bring a kid to ObamaMeals but you can't force them to eat. No eat, no money, no profit.

It's not so much what people eat that causes obesity, it's how much they eat.

Doh Homer... no chit.

Just feed the kids Tex-Mex food. It's healthy, tasty, easy to make, cheap.

Let's be honest, there was probably some interest group for healthy foods and I'm sure some donation was made to Obama.

It's all part of the social engineering movement.
'Tis that. In the end, we'll all read only good books, eat only good food, and a whole lot of people who would otherwise be offended by us won't be - which will make us all extremely happy and satisfied.

I carried that into adulthood and I am by no means fat. Six Feet, 180 lbs. According the the CDC I am normal.
