Restaurant refuses Iraq War Veteran and service dog

When James Glaser stepped into Big I’s Restaurant in Oxford, Massachusetts with his service dog Jack, he was quickly told to leave in no uncertain terms. Glaser, a 41-year-old Air Force veteran, was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in November of 2011 when he retired and says that he does not leave his house without Jack by his side. The veteran explained what happened to WHDH 7 News, “I hear, ‘Get that fake service dog out of my restaurant!.’” Big I’s owner, Russell Ireland didn’t consider the canine a true service dog and said, “This is a post-traumatic stress dog. It's to give him emotional support. How much emotional support do you need when you are eating breakfast?”

The owner is an asshole. PTSD is a serious mental condition that affects thousands of Americans every year.

That aside: We are a society that has been trained to isolate victims of psychological illnesses, over diagnose and over medicate. It's all grounded in the amazing ignorance of the general populace and is in part the fault of less than ethical medical community who is willing to make a buck at the expense of gullible people. I have a person in my family with BP-II. It's NOT to be taken lightly. It's not something which disappears because of location. I can imagine what Mr. Glaser felt like after that incident. He probably felt disrespected at first, then hurt and finally isolated for his condition.

So in conclusion: Fuck Russell Ireland and his ignorant bitch ass.

So the Vet goes above and beyond the law and shows his papers about the dog's legitimacy: Owner still not convinced. Law enforcement called in to further verify the dog: Owner still not convinced.

After the story keeps going:

Despite public sentiment Ireland is not retreating and says he apologizes only to veterans with “legitimate” service dogs, not Glaser.

Owner still not backing down.

Back in the day, I used to hang around with some Vietnam Vets. They took a lot of advantage of their "condition" and would bully their way into line.

It seems really odd for a restaurant owner to refuse business to someone with a LICENSED service animal if they are otherwise behaving. While I'll never know what happened, I think we should know more before we condemn the Russell Ireland guy.

My opinion is not based on the fact that he's a vet. I couldn't care less about it. He's been diagnosed with PTSD and his condition seems severe enough to necessitate a service dog.

Now, that aside, did you watch the video on the page? This Ireland guy is a dick.

Yeah, I see so many people trying to force their pets into places where pets are not allowed or customary, I really can't blame the owner, especially since the health department could shut him down.

Well, I live with 3 (non-licensed) service animals myself and I'm very sympathetic to anyone who is emotionally attached to their fuzzy. It just seems so bizarre that I questioned it but I hadn't watched the video:3oops: and now I have and yes, he's a dickhead.

Really bad decision he made. Very hard to understand.

How sad.

I call bull****.

Federal Law:

http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Food/GuidanceRegulation/UCM189448.pdf

(B)Live animals may be allowed in the following situations if the contamination of FOOD; clean EQUIPMENT, UTENSILS, and LINENS; and unwrapped SINGLE - SERVICE and SINGLE - USE ARTICLES can not result:

3. In areas that are not used for FOOD preparation and that are usually open for customers, such as dining and sales areas, SERVICE ANIMALS that are controlled by the disabled EMPLOYEE or PERSON, if a health or safety HAZARD will not result from the presence or activities of the SERVICE ANIMAL.

Sorry. I still side with the owner of the business. There is no way to know if the dog is going to take a big old dump in the restaurant. In addition a lot of folks have allergies to animals.

Service dogs are trained not to do that.

It wasn't long ago you justified an service dog owner and a service dog being removed from a boardwalk because of confusion in the law and illegitimate use (despite it being legitimate and with papers shown). Then you started talking about people taking dogs to restaurants, because it is not legitimate use, and complain about students receiving accommodations for their disabilities in schools and colleges.

A similar story erupts, and yet again it is the same thing: oh but it could mean they get in trouble for something else, they don't belong there...you don't know what those dogs are going to do!

It seems to me that there is an issue between information about the law being readily available in your head and a lack of understanding as to why these are reasonable and justified accommodations for individuals with disabilities.

You clearly have no idea what it is you're talking about. Service dogs are trained not to do that.

Unfortunately there is no shortage of assholes in the world.

The No Jews or Coloreds libertarians will be in full support of the owner. To them this is no big deal, he and Fido should just move on. To them, that's liberty in action.

This isn't really a Libertarian thing. It's a common sense thing. You find many an asshole in the world who doesn't think PTSD is a serious condition.

You clearly have no idea what it is you're talking about. Service dogs are trained not to do that.

And you clearly have no idea when you see someone milking their PTSD for attention. The guy called the cops and is hamming it up on TV playing the victim to make this business owner look bad as opposed to making a case for service animals. If this were some old woman who lost her husband and wanted her poodle with her for comfort, people would not be falling over backwards to help her play the victim.

The great thing about common sense is it is highly overrated for its sensibility and its power of insight.

To them it doesn't matter either way. It's all about them, always.

Here we go again. The patron committed what incredible sin? Asking the business owner to adhere to a federal law.

Stuff like this totally pisses me off. We send out troops overseas to be cannon fodder for a bunch of suicidal Islamists, and after serving this country for 21 years, including several active duty stents in war zones, this is how we treat them when they get back home??? I wonder how many times this big-mouth Ireland has put his life on the line for his country. I'd be surprised if the only time he ever gets off his fat ass is to flip pancakes, then head home to grab a beer and watch a ball game without a thought of the kids who have been brain-damaged, traumatized and maimed so he has the freedom to be a big-mouthed lard ass dickwad. :2mad:

Then track him down and send him a check to afford a lawyer to sue the guy--he will appreciate the attention since he is more interested in harassing the guy than educating him.

He attempted to educate him on the spot, not once, but twice, and now a third time through the public.

What do we have so far?

1) Federal law doesn't back up your first argument.
2) The standards for service dogs don't back up your second argument and third argument.

So you resort to a non sequitur and completely subjective opinion. How's that working out for you?

I'm not a Libertarian and I don't know much about them other than in a general way. I met one, very odd fellow who was very disabled. But that's quite an accusation. Do you mean no Jews and no blacks or is this just high drama?

I mean they are fine with that sign in a restaurant window, and they are.
