A man was arrested in New York City's international airport with uranium destined for Iran hidden in the soles of his shoes, the US Justice Department said.

Patrick Campbell, 33, who was arrested Wednesday as he arrived at the John F Kennedy airport from Paris, is accused of trying to act as an intermediary to sell Iran 1,000 tons of purified uranium, in violation of US law.

The Sierra Leone-based Campbell had been under surveillance since May 2012, when he responded to an ad on the site Alibaba.com by someone looking to buy uranium 308, or yellow cake.

Asked to supply 1,000 tons of uranium -- disguised with other types of ore to escape detection -- Campbell promised to ship the product, disguised as chromite, from Sierra Leone to the port of Bandar Abbas in Iran.

Investigators also found contact information for the sale and delivery of the uranium on a USB key.

Accused of violating US law concerning transactions with Iran, Campbell could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $1 million.

The case was transferred to a federal court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.....snip~

This guy is a TRAITOR.....what defense is there? He was merely doing business. If he is an American then he is a Traitor. 20 years and 1 million dollar fine. Just isn't enough. Can you believe this. In NY.....caught with the stuff in the soles of his shoes. Worse is.....somehow this guy could get his hands on that much Uranium. 1000 tons. What do you think should take place with this guy?

He should get an all inclusive trip to lovely Guantanamo Bay spa for special "water treatments."

Mornin Rocket.....yeah and know exactly where he can get all this Uranium from. Glad someone was on it in NY. He has no excuse. It's a treasonous act regardless of anything he says. But he was inside the country. Good thing it wasn't parts to anything for here.

My gut is telling me this is just some random unstable guy who never actually had access to that much uranium. Because someone in that line of work being dumb enough to walk around with uranium IN HIS FREAKING SHOES doesn't seem likely.

Some stories are just too weird.

I think the death penalty is warranted.

Not to mention going to the site Alibaba.....I mean he must not be that smart. Unless he was a diversion.

He would rack up some serious frequent flyer miles if he was trying to deliver 1,000 tons two shoes-full at a time.

What kind of shoes can you fit a thousand tons of uranium into?
shame on you MMC for not dismissing this article out of hand

Try again? Who said anything about a 1000 tons in his shoes?

uranium 308 lol

That's what the AFP had.....same with NBC too.

During an investigation over several months, prosecutors say the man had communicated with an undercover Homeland Security agent, promising he had connections to a firm that mined uranium in Sierra Leone.

Prosecutors say an agent first posted an ad on the website alibaba.com seeking to purchase processed uranium, also known as yellowcake uranium. Yellowcake can be used in nuclear weapons, when processed further.

When he was arrested, prosecutors say he had raw uranium in two pairs of shoes and a thumb drive with a contract for the sale and supply of the uranium to Iran.

He is charged with violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and Iranian Transaction Regulations.....snip~

Then it worked.....as every news source out there has something up on it. Not to mention Iran told us we had best not think about Striking Syria. So you think we are just trying to give the Iranians a little scare huh?

Samples of raw uranium ore were found beneath the inner soles of his shoes, an agent said in a US court complaint.

When enriched, yellowcake can be used in the manufacture of nuclear fuel and weapons.

He presented himself as someone affiliated with a company engaged in mining and selling uranium in Sierra Leone, according to the US complaint, a copy of which was published by the New York Times.

The complaint against him was filed in Florida, his ultimate destination at the time of his arrest.....snip~

All in time for the Labor day Weekend, huh?

It would seem an appropriate sentence that he continues to wear shoes with uranium in them.

I think it is more designed to influence the American public regarding Iran and nukes

What we have is an ICE operation dealing with someone who had no ties to Iran

Why would anyone care what iran has to say? That fake regime should have been liquidated years ago, and probably will be by the end of this one/early next.

I think you would have to ask the UN that. Since they put up with it all the time. Same with the Security Council. Myself I would have to see them walk the walk.

So all that effort and spying on american people along with all the complaints over the TSA have resulted in us busting a scammer who did not even know enough about uranium to get the isotopes right? I guess that is something. Still it sounds to me more like a story that is being blown up for public propaganda because the US thinks everyone is a bunch of idiots who will herald the apprehension of one of the world's stupidest criminals. It is not like they took down Al capone here, more like they took down beavis and butthead. I am good with them tossing the idiot in jail, but I am not terribly impressed.

Reminds me of when the FBI busted up a "terrorist plat" to attack the Sears Tower. I don't know who's dumber: the guy who got caught or the people who are falling for this propoganda garbage.
