My son is 21 now. When I was raising him I was shocked at the number of parents that just didn't seem to give a **** about what their kids were doing, especially boys. They never called to check on them, would let them run around all hours of the night, didn't pay attention to what they did in school. They had no guidance. My son pitched a fit because I wouldn't let him do what the other kids parents were letting his friends do. He thanks me today and says the biggest impact I had on his life was that he always knew I cared and loved him and would do anything for him. He talks about how he recognizes now that he has a solid foundation because of it and that has an enormous impact on his life. I never had it in my family but by some miracle figured it out. How do teach other parents, who never had that themselves, the value of it and how to do it. It seems like a generational effort.

You start with discipline and consequences for inappropriate behavior. If you love your kids you not only teach them right from wrong but but you have expectations that they will play the straight and narrow and when they fall short of those expectations you take them to task for it.

I am so sick and damned tired of hearing "Well, they're just kids". NO!!! They're soon to be adults and if you don't get them on the right track from the git-go you're failing them. You can be warm and affectionate and understanding and STILL exercise appropriate discipline.

As a society we need to stop playing this damned game where we figure that since failure is inevitable we should cater to the least common denominator. Screw that!! It's time to EXPECT good, productive behavior and to redirect when people fail instead of coddle them and tell them "It's OK. It's not your fault. We'll take care of you." **** that! How about a little more, "You failed. You now have two choices; you can respond to that failure in a way that lessens the chance of failing again or you can wallow around in misery and never accomplish anything again. If you chose the first option I'll help you. If you choose the second you're on your own."

The idea of discipline isn't seen as love but it's one of the most important aspects of expressing that deep emotional desire for your progeny to succeed in their lives. It's a problem that the majority of the Black community is failing to address, and of course political opportunists will charge that 'racism' is always the cause. But it's not a 'race' problem, it's a cultural problem.

Maybe it's time to reintroduce the draft. Perhaps then young men, and women, would learn more discipline and, after meeting their fellow Americans from around the country, the nation may become less divided.

I don't know about the draft but we damned sure need to stop treating kids like fragile little kittens.

I don't care if your doctor has diagnosed your kid as ADD or whatever. The kid is disrupting class and making it harder for the other kids to learn. They need to straighten up or ship off to special ed. If they can't learn math or English then we'll teach them a trade so at least they can be a productive member of society at some point. If your 14 year old wants birth control then they need to get it from you, not the school. If junior is caught tagging walls in the neighborhood then he'll be out here every Saturday and Sunday for a month scrubbing the stuff off and if "it wasn't him, he was just hanging with those kids" then....tough! He'll STILL be out here scrubbing away. If he's stealing I really don't care that he's 12. There are plenty of streets that need sweeping and curbs that need painting for $1 an hour until he can pay back twice what he stole.

Oh, I almost forgot, if Junior "forgets" to show up for his court appointed duty then YOU can come out and work the same routine.

Duncan OK is about 50 miles east of here. The senseless murder has been all over 'lamestream' national and international media. 'Good Morning America' is not a Fox Noise clone and they had extensive coverage of the murder, the victim's family in Australia, the victim GF's family, his baseball team in both countries and the Sheriff giving his opinion on parenting.

Duncan OK currently has a small army of news oulets swamping it.

I didn't crap anything during the Zimmerman trial. I do think these 3 teens are going to get the first class kind of justice Okies hand out in such situations.

Now if these teens have facebook postings on how much they want to kill Whitey and how badly Whitey needs to pay.... or some such you MIGHT have a race card to play.

But Duncan OK is 90% white, if three any type of teens just wanted to shoot someone the odds are very high the random victim would be white.

I know Duncan fairly well, Hallibutron and Murf's Guns, my first thought on hearing three teens is 3 white or a mixed bag as far as race goes- Duncan is a WHITE town... :peace

Am I? I mean... your the one framing it as a statement rather than a question. Let me know when you've watched me play the victim because that guy does it nonstop. He's completely concerned about race and whining about how white people are victims. Do you feel like you agree with him on this more than not? Are you an underdog victim of the black race?

They confessed and now it is time to pay the piper. This sort of thing brings the trolls out by the score trying to get someone to argue with them. But honestly, I don't see anyone protesting that they admitted their guilt.

We're fairly cognizant of American culture here, no-one's surprised an Aussie got shot over there, it was bound to happen sooner or later.
