Tenn. judge changes infant's name from 'Messiah'

Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah' | wbir.com

A Newport mother is appealing a court's decision after a judge ordered her son's name be changed from "Messiah."Jaleesa Martin and the father of Messiah could not agree on a last name, which is how they ended up at a child support hearing in Cocke County Chancery Court on Thursday.
That is when the first name came into question.

...

Judge Ballew ordered the 7-month-old's name be "Martin DeShawn McCullough." It includes both parent's last names but leaves out Messiah.
"The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ," Judge Ballew said.

Bad judge...

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

Messiah is a terrible choice for a given name anyway. ;)

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

This seems hard to believe. Still, can't wait for the Onion article covering this. Heading titled, "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!"

There are a lot of terrible choices for names. But that's not the point. A clear mixing of religion in government where it does not belong. I didn't pay enough attention to see what sort of judge it was (appointed or elected), but the judge should no longer be one, anywhere, ever.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

I think it is a wonderful judge. Children should have appropriate names and not names that would lead to a life or ridicule and harassment.

Get out. Do you really think a baby's name should be a matter of judicial revue?
Unless your name is Ziggy, Dweezel or Moon Unit you don't have a case.

Maybe, but if he was Latino his name might be 'Jesus'. Do we want a judge to say it can't be?

Come on. You don't really mean that do you? Or are you just trying to pull our peter, Peter?

Quite right, the government should have the duty and the right to protect it from parents who do not have the decency to give the child a name that does not make it bullied and ridiculed.

Messiah is not an suitable name for a child.

No, I seriously am not trying to pull anything. I am 100% serious.

Everyone in the case is insane and retarded.

A solution everyone could agree to: appellate court swoops in and changes this judge's name to Messiah.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

I saw this and I just knew there would be some extenuating circumstances to this case that would make it not so ridiculous. From the look of it, I was wrong. That was just a painfully bad decision by that judge, and an even worse justification she gives.

I thought, at first, that the impasse over naming the kid motivated this decision, but like you, I was wrong. The judge is just being an activist idiot.

You have a very strange idea of what the role of government is.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

When a Judge shows this kind of idiocy, the victim should be able to ask for an immediate removal of the Judge from office.

Re: Tennessee Judge orders baby's name be changed from 'Messiah'

If this story is true....this judge should be disbarred and benched. What an idiot!

In the Netherlands people have to register their name at the local authority/city administration and the civil servant who is in charge of that registration can refuse to accept that name and the parent who does not agree with the decision of the civil servant can appeal that decision in front of the judge who can agree with either the city or the parents.

A lot of times the name will be allowed but for example a Dutch motivational speaker who is famous for his loud screaming of TSJAKKA wanted to call his daughter Tsjakkalotte and that was refused by the judge. Also the name Marieke Methadon was refused. Insulting combinations are sometimes also refused. A combination that would spell N.A.Z.I. can be refused. For example, if you call your child Nicholas Anthony Zacharias Isaac Johnson, spelled in short N.A.Z.I. Johnson than that would be refused by the civil servant and the judge.

If you couldn't tell, I was partly joking. (The name is still horrible though)

The judge obviously went too far.

... You do know that Jesus' name wasn't "Jesus" right? It was actually *drum roll please* Yeshua. The name "Jesus" is actually a pretty recent invention.
