Although I'm happy that parents can't name their kids Se7en or R2D2 - I don't really see a valid reason for the limitation.
in 2012, there were at least two baby boys named "Jedi"

(If you haven't read it, Catch 22 is possibly the greatest satire written in the last 100 years. It's absolutely one of the best American works ever produced and is funny as hell. One of my favorite books of all time)
If I recall, his dad gave him both first and middle name Major while his mom was recovering from delivery. When he got in the Army, he got promoted to Major quickly, but then he couldn't get promoted past that. He was always Major Major -- long name & title being Major Major Major Major.

Edited to add: The funniest book I've ever read. The movie was useless, but the book was awesome. I used the name "Milo Minderbinder" on a different forum for a while.

That judge was totally out of line.... Of course the ruling is being appealed in which the parents will win...

I wouldn't name my kid "Messiah" however there are plenty of kids born everyday named "Jesus" - God forbid!

I would never name my kid something like that, or some of the other weird names celebrities give their kids. That's almost like saying, here tease my kid everyone!

We had a girl whose last name was French. When people started referring to French fries as "freedom fries", we teased her that we had to start calling her "Freedom". She was pissed.

I think I'm okay with it in really extreme cases - e.g. something like the use of race-based profanity is very likely to cause substantial harm to a child's social development - but it should be a case-by-case determination that stands up to strict scrutiny.
It doesn't matter what her argument was because it was not her place at all to change the baby's first name. That was not the issue brought before her and she had no legal place to have any say in that particular part of the child's name.

I am reminded of a little girl I attended elementary school with named Debbie Rape. She was a very sweet little girl. But some kids still made fun of her.

I do hope she grew up and has had a very happy life.

Irrelevant to the discussion we were having.

Judges aren't restricted to apply the law "only on the issues brought" to court.
