Olympic boycott?

How is he worse than say the head of china. and some would argue what the US has done in terms of death penalty, the invasion of Iraq, Vietnam, etc is no better.

I guess I just don't think its all that big a deal in the grand scheme of things when we have other countries engaging in genocide or mass oppression of other nations

frankly what Putin proposes pales to say the occupation of Tibet for example

Later
China didn't threaten our athletes with jail for being gay. That does make a difference.

that's easy to say-to sacrifice the life dreams of others so you can feel good.

its what that asshole carter did

he did a lord Farquaad (Many of you may die [getting me a hot princess] but its a price I AM WILLING To pay}
One bad choice beget another, the boycott by the Soviet Union in 1984. I'm surprised all of the brilliance on DP hasn't brought up the Snowden issue, one you still have trouble with. I didn't agree with straight amnesty by Carter. They should have at least given state-side service.

How would Ford have handled the boycott? Was Carter pressured by the "Patriot Party" in preparing for the 1980 election along with the dark shadow of Bush-41?

DADT was a great policy for Dems. Before that, states like your Ohio were notorious for propositions on social issues on even-numbered election years. BTW, some of our counties have gone CC but I don't know them.

I could be wrong, but this sounds like DADT. Is Russia saying "don't rub it in our face as you have in your Country"? The LGBT community is consistently their own worst enemy, as well as hurting their "party". They were among many Dem wings who poured and stayed home in 2010.

There's no party. They just tend to vote for the people who don't call them devils. Why some of them vote for the GOP is where I have issues. I tend not to vote for people who seem to hate me.

Because they think they are still Lincoln Repubs, a group that no longer exists. Dems have been their party. Straight athletes with children in public do not "act out" to draw attention. DADT in public for an event like the Olympics is only common-sense. Gays continue to run the risk of driving away independents.

You seem to believe that Gay Pride day is Gay Every Day? I can't help you with that. If Spring Break was how we judged heterosexuals the women of America would be in overalls and winter coats, by law.

There's a bit of buzz in the media about boycotting the next winter Olympics in Russia in protest of anti-gay legislation there. Would that be an appropriate response? Would we be expecting athletes who've trained for years for the tournament to make the sacrifice for our sensibilities? Should we pressure corporate sponsors to make a point instead or should we just butt out of the politics and social dynamics of the country and have the competition as-is? Can we send openly-gay athletes in a situation where they could be arrested and convicted and jailed?

We have to let Russia know that if they politicize the games or have their petty little war on homosexuality during the games then we take the games away from them and give them to either the US/Canada or the EU (Germany, Austria, France, Netherlands for all the speed skating events) because the games have to remain pure and not be marred by anti-gay laws during the games in the cities the olypics take place in.

I wouldn't feel good about it personally, I have sympathy for the athletes, but all societies have to take moral stands. We have ours, they have theirs, and ours is the more mature one. If they were prosecuting Christians and banning the Bible I suspect you would feel the same?

ITs idiotic. if we boycott Russia for prosecuting BEHAVIOR then other countries can boycott us for the death penalty, war on drugs, etc

It's easy enough to imagine that there could be other countries which might be inclined to boycott a U.S.-hosted Olympic event because of our tolerance for homosexuality and other related evils. They would certainly be more justified for taking such a stance than we would in boycotting a country for standing against these evils.

the purpose of the olympics is to avoid politics

That's really the point.

Russians are talking about "openly gay" behavior in their Country, not Gay Pride Day every day. Independents don't have a problem with Gay Pride day, neither do I, but then you extrapolated to Gay Every day. I talk of straight athletes with children at the Olympics. You have a diatribe about Spring Break and loose women. If you can't talk with me, you've lost your crusade. Choose your battles wisely.

I've no need to convince you of anything. Death will solve that for us both soon enough and the trends are clear, your side lost just as we told you it would. It will in Russia as well, just as it has in other places grasping at what's left of their dogmatic "morality".

As for the battles, yours is against the tides. Good luck with that.

You reject the very people and Democratic party like me who have been fighting your battle in PRIVATE my entire life. I grow weary of trying to convince each segment of our "big tent" to grow up. GLBT non-voting in 2010 heped give us the GOP House until at least 2022.

I reject? I'm not fighting for my rights, I already have them. If you support rights equality for others, for gays, then good for you, but as a society we sometimes have to take a stand. This may be one of those times.

As for staying home in 2010, that's both unfortunate and typical. Lots of Dem voters are kids and they aren't that easy to motivate, they're kids.

Boycott the Olympics over gays?

Without some unified approach such as a mid-term convention, the party not POTUS will gain. And that is before Voting Rights Abuses, many aimed at the kids. I'm surprised Snowden isn't coming up. This would be a better cover for the RINO Obama.

I say Olympics should be boycotted from being kept in Russia as a protest. They would lose a lot of potential income because of their foolish laws.

More like we should go there, have all our athletes where little pride pins, and dare Russia to do something.

The assholes.

I assume you mean a pin that says something like "gay pride"?

What if our athletes don't have any gay pride? I know I don't. And if some decided to make fools of themselves in front of TV cameras in an overzealous attack of gayness or stupidity and get arrested, what is our incompetent President to do? Send the incompetent John Kerry over there to make things worse? Send Hillary Clinton over on a special assignment to insult them and fall flat on her face yet again?

This is all a nonissue as long as special interest groups don't make it one. There will be no problems as long as people follow the law over there for a couple of weeks. But I suspect those that place sex in front of everything will want to create and design as many problems and cause as much trouble as they can. They do it on other issues. This one won't be much different for them.
