    1) To my knowledge, gays at the Olympics are no more promiscuous or lacking in self-control than heterosexuals are at the games. It's why the games provide upwards of 100,000 condoms to the athletes, perhaps more since that's the last number I heard.

    2) It has become somewhat of a tradition that there is a "Pride House" or whatever they call it where gay athletes and their families from around the world congregate during the games and such a place likely won't be provided in Sochi.

I believe this is simply politicians being politicians and much ado about nothing in the end and young people from around the world will congregate, do what young people generally do - have fun, drink, have sex, have more sex, make friends and go home, some with shiny medals around their necks, some without, and all having for the most part enjoyed the cultural and athletic experience.
From what I have heard, the Olympics, filled with late teen and 20 something men and women with little supervision is something of a wild party. If only I was young and fit and talented...

I seriously doubt that its policy towards homosexuality had anything to do with the Soviet Union losing the Cold War. Some people really have homosexuality on the brain.

Not that specifically, but the mindset which sees it as a good idea.

No, not that either. As hard as it may be for some people to believe, the universe does not hinge on the issue of homosexuality.

    Pretty certain we would.

It's a feast for multi-national corporations (of which the IOC is one), as well as for the richest people of Russia and whatever other elites can make it. It's an excuse to hand billions of dollars in public tax money to a private corporation, all for the sake of a sporting event.

These big businesses simply don't care about these hotbutton social issues, and neither do the upper crust (including politicians) who all get a nice slice of the pie. Do you know how many people died making way for the Beijing Olympics in China? How many neighborhoods destroyed, and how many lives ruined? There was mega international pressure back then to reconsider China, but it never happened.

I really hate the Russian government and its theocratic sectarian nutjobs who have stoked the fires of prejudice in Russia with all these anti-gay laws, but sadly, given the track record of the IOC, there's little chance it's going to be boycotted. There's just too much money to be made, and the infrastructure is already being laid.

Actually, a lot of social justice researchers have noticed the wave of humans rights problems that follows the Olympics, the worst of which is the trade in human sex slaves, some of them minors. This kind of social injustice seems par for the course whenever the IOC comes up, at this point.
For everything you write about the IOC, I could swap "IOC" for FIFA and the Football World Cup and you'd still be right.

Only thing now is that Brazil is seeing internal protest at the corruption on a society changing level (not immediately - but in the long term). I don't see the same in Russia, the bigotry against homosexuals seems far too deep rooted.

    It is their society standard.

Do you agree or disagree that parents should have expectations of not having their children exposed to things they don't want them exposed to? What if you local nudist colony wanted to host games in a childrens park in your community, that your children walk pst to school every day? Or are you OK with public nudity? What about public sex events?

This is a different country, different culture. Even in our culture, we draw lines.
