I'm always amazed at how some people talk about the constitution. Like they think it's a holy writ, created by saints. So odd.
The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected.

So since it was not written by saints, it can be trampled by the government whenever they so choose?

lol? Has Anyone Really Been Far Even as Decided to Use Even Go Want to do Look More Like?

The point is that I'm always amused at how people like Henry try to make the argument about who loves the constitution more: No, i'm more constitutionally minded then you, so I win! It's akin to trying to play the morality card when discussing international relations.

Which the U.S. does, at least publicly.

Which all countries do, publicly. And none of them abide by it privately, and that's perfectly understandable. As Richelieu said, "Man is immortal, his salvation is hereafter; the state has no immortality, its salvation is now or never."

I don't recall China talking about it (human rights or other morality issues) besides to thumb their noses at the U.S. Russia/Soviet Union falls into the same category.

Sure they do. They say the rest of the world has no right to get involved in the Taiwan issue because it's a Chinese problem for the Chinese people to figure out. That's taking a moral stand. Russia supports Serbia similar issues, having to do with Slavic people, Eastern Orthodoxy, and the use of the Cyrillic alphabet. Those are both moral appeals, saying "You wouldn't want someone in your business so don't get into ours." A moral argument. More obviously in current affairs, Russia continues to accuse the West of sowing violence and supporting an illegal insurrection in Syria. That's putting a veneer of human rights (the 'right' to not to have to live in a warzone) over their motives.

All countries do this. It's nothing new. The US isn't special.

Yeah, you're right. I was thinking of the Taiwan issue as just a territorial dispute though and not a moral stand that comes with it.

No, they think of it as what it is, a document designed to limit the power of government - something that is sorely needed in this day and age.
