Well, not to defend Sisyphus, but Texas isn't the end-all, be-all of great places to live in America. I lived there for a year, and it was the worst year of my life. Worst BBQ, strongest thunderstorms, rudest people I've ever dealt with. In 46 years, the only thing I've ever had stolen was in Texas.

Hmmm? I'm an uppity/arrogant Northwesterner by birth, with 50 years of living in and around Seattle (3 in TX, 1 in Brasil, 1 in Germany), and I could not disagree more. BBQ is raised to a fine art in Texas. Go to a competition (I went every year in Muenster TX, which had a BBQ cook-off in conjunction with the German Festival) and you will be blown away. Absolutely par excellence. And the T-storms are magnificent, lighting up the sky and cloud cover like I've never seen before, and orders of magnitude more awe inspiring than a Santa Fe sunset. And while Texans ooze religiosity, and a smidge too much Right Wing dogma, one thing is for certain: friendly as all get out. Truly nice folks, if not some of the nicest I've ever met, anywhere on earth. (been to most of it)

Texas BBQ is only good if you've not had it anywhere else. Give me Memphis BBQ or North Carolina BBQ or any BBQ over Texas BBQ. The storms were pretty awesome, but the rude people? We obviously must have been in different places. To me, Texas was a nightmare I'd gladly forget.

I've been here for 44 years and haven't had the experience's you've had.

True Texans, those who were born and raised here are some of the nicest and most respectable and hospitable people that you will ever meet.

Barbecue ? Lets see there's Goode's and then there's Perry's, not to mention about a gazillion individuals who compete in the Houston Rodeo and other Barbecue cook-offs.

Where did you live ? Dallas ?

Dallas is pretty rough and by now absolutely over run with Illegals Aliens.

I was in North Central, up near OK / Red River. Nice folks, and BBQ that kicks butt, by a mile, to any I've had anywhere, or in the deep south ... if made by an aficionado. Maybe the BBQ joints are better in the deep south, than in TX, since the hole in the wall joints are in effect an aficionado turned into tiny restaurant from a converted transmission shop or whatever. I'll concede that in TX the commercial BBQ is like most chain / me-too restaurant food: mediocre. But when the good old boys get together with their BBQs on fancy trailers, and compete, it's at a level that is unsurpassed, in my experience.

Sorry about your nightmare. I went there expecting it, but having been lured to Sherman/Denison by a company offering a Manhattan salary in an area with very low cost of living. (mortgage = 1.3 days' salary) So the greed got me, and coming from oh so progressive Seattle, I feared I was heading for skinhead land, and was utterly shocked. Good old boys sitting around the table at a breakfast joint were often (frequently) White, Black and Mexicano. Very, naturally, integrated, racially. I have more black friends in Texas than anywhere. Meanwhile back in Seattle, folks talk a nice "Coexist" game, but the racial divides are stark.

Copy that!!! And I was about a year in the Metroplex. Dallas, too, is friendly as all get out.

No, I lived in Victoria, but was frequently in Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christie and Dallas, and unfortunately it was the same, everywhere I went. I just wasn't impressed with it at all. It just seemed, to me, anyway, like Texas is full of a bunch of puffed up people who think their BBQ is better than it is, and who yell at you for picking a stupid blue flower off the side of the road. And if you weren't born there, forget about it. Never in my life have I lived somewhere where people could be so unbelievably full of their heritage, and how where you are born makes you better. Like where you are born makes a difference.

And I wasn't forced to go to Texas. I had heard that Texas was great, full of friendly people, good food, etc. I chose to move there, based on that. It's just that once I got there, it wasn't the way I'd heard it.

I have met a few people here that fit the description youv'e made but I never atribbuted that to a geological issue.

That the soil they stood on somehow made them a rotten individual.

On any large scale the people here are friendly and polite.

I just haven't run into the rudeness you were subjected to.

It sounds like youv'e unfairly judged the entire populace of a geographical region based on pre-concieved notions.

Iv'e met far more people who had issues with Texas based on ideology, who have extended their negative stereotypes to the people that live here because it fits their narrative.

    Barbque ?

When it comes down to it there are only so many ways you can do it. And the State to State bragging is just silly.

I guarantee there are people here who make their barbque exactly the same as people in Memphis or North Carolina.

So what do you know about the Fifth Ward? (I'll give you time to Google. ) More important do you know who she succeeded and why by this measure alone, she is an utter disgrace?
