Deficits are yearly, the debt is a long term problem.

What is the purpose of those 50 states? We are united in providing for the common defense and PROMOTING not providing for domestic welfare.

The Founders understood the problems with a large central govt. and got away from that when they fled England and fought for Independence. Social programs belong at the state and local level, not the national level. You pay state and local taxes and now you want to increase Federal taxes to do what states and local governments should be doing. Liberal elites love having people like you

That's not such a bad accomplishment.

If shutting down the government gets Obama off his ass and off the campaign bus and into serious negotiations moving forward, that will also be a good thing for the country. And considering the far greater focus of the American people on both the economy and the deficit/debt situation, it will likely help, not hurt Republicans this time around.
Um, welfare reform happened prior to 95, and it did not cause the dotcom boom....LOL. FFS!

Welfare reform was signed into law by Clinton in 1996 - do you really need a Canadian to inform you about American politics?

Did anyone really think Dole had a chance against Clinton? I don't even think Dole himself did.

So much for the belief that Obama cares about cutting the deficit and addressing the debt. He proposes a 3.77 trillion dollar budget and supporters continue to believe the rhetoric and ignore the results.
Good news for the Private Sector, since every Dollar cut from federal spending, is a cut of $1 in future revenue for the Private Sector.

LOL, just another liberal that doesn't understand the components of GDP and what generates actual revenue and wealth. Why such loyalty to a failed ideology? The Federal Govt. isn't the biggest component of GDP yet but it is growing thanks to Obama. Is it your intent to make everyone dependent on the Federal Govt? Do you know where the govt. gets it money?

with 43 presidents we accumulated 10 trillion in debt the 44 president accumulated 6.5 trillion by his self and the debt will be 20 trillion by the time he leaves office. he will accumulate as much debt in 8 years as it took every other president over 200 years to do

Help me understand, then. Name a Dollar of federal spending which does not accrue to the private sector. Just one.

Of course we look like idiots … because we are …
    I for one am embarrassed!!
    -------------------------------------------
    10) Only in America ... could politicians talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000.00 a plate campaign fund-raising event.

    9) Only in America ... could people claim that the government still discriminates against black Americans when they have a black President, a black Attorney General and roughly 20% of the federal workforce is black while only 14% of the population is black.
40+ % of all federal entitlements goes to black Americans – 3X the rate that go to whites, 5X the rate that go to Hispanics!

    8) Only in America ... could they have had the two people most responsible for our tax code, Timothy Geithner (the head of the Treasury Department) and Charles Rangel (who once ran the Ways and Means Committee), BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes.

    7) Only in America ... can they have terrorists kill people in the name of Allah and have the media primarily react by fretting that Muslims might be harmed by the backlash.

    6) Only in America ... would they make people who want to legally become American citizens wait for years in their home countries and pay tens of thousands of dollars for the privilege, while they discuss letting anyone who sneaks into the country illegally just 'magically' become American citizens.

    5) Only in America ... could the people who believe in balancing the budget and sticking by the country's Constitution be thought of as "extremists."

    4) Only in America ... could you need to present a driver's license to cash a check or buy alcohol, but not to vote.

    3) Only in America ... could people demand the government investigate whether oil companies are gouging the public because the price of gas went up when the return on equity invested in a major U.S. oil company (Marathon Oil) is less than half of a company making tennis shoes (Nike).

    2) Only in America ... could the government collect more tax dollars from the people than any nation in recorded history, still spend a Trillion dollars more than it has per year - for total spending of $7- Million PER MINUTE, and complain that it doesn't have nearly enough money.

    1) Only in America ... could the rich people - who pay 86% of all income taxes - be accused of not paying their "fair share" by people who don't pay any income taxes at all.
